luckydog32 reacted to GoodBytes in USB group announces USB 3.2
SATA is still faster than USB. SATA doesn't need contently your CPU to manage the USB data transfer, which the CPU need to request status like a maniac to know when a file transfer to send the next one. SATA has its own processor to deal with this, and has less overhead than USB. Hence why SATA will always be faster than USB. USB was designed to be dirt cheap. SATA was designed to be fast, low overhead, and doesn't need the CPU to handle tasks, beside requesting the main instructions. SATA is relatively expensive compared to USB, especially back in the early days, due to that extra processor needed., This is also one of the reasons why eSATA never took off, same for Firewire.

SATA issue is reaching the same max speeds as USB. And this is probably because SATA 3 reached the max of what the SATA cable and connector can reach. So, perhaps a new technology is needed. And this is where PCIe drives with NVMe comes in. I won't be surprised if a location for PCIe NVMe drives on the motherboard becomes standard. Like behind the motherboard, and cases have a cut out for accessing the drives.

It should help with any kind of performance. Cpu's tend to have trouble working around memory read and writes since it's so much slower than the rest of the pipeline. They get around this by trying to predict what instructions will be coming up next so they can prefetch the instructions and data they will need. Even then prediction isn't 100% and faster memory will ultimately lead to less time wasted by the cpu. As far as how much it helps, I have no idea.

luckydog32 reacted to Humbug in AMD Moves Vega 56 Embargo Forward, Asks Reviewers to Prioritize Over 64
This was expected and makes perfect sense.

The vega64 is already a fully unlocked part. So even though AMD badly wants it to be clearly faster than a 1080  they cannot just add more ROPs or TUs now. Those decisions were made years ago. And they cannot keep ramping up clock speed indefinitely. So they had to settle on a Vega64 air cooled stock version which only 'trades blows' with the GTX 1080... The water cooled version and the after market ones from sapphire Asus etc will be faster but again probably no faster than aftermarket overclocked 1080s.

Whereas Vega56 is a cut down, lower clocked version of the flagship. Being so late to market AMD basically had the luxury of starting with full fat vega, and then down tuning it's configuration in order to create a next tier SKU. But now they know exactly where they should settle on in order to remain comfortably faster than the gtx 1070.

Vega56 may be the only SKU in the lineup where AMD can say that they are clearly faster in every benchmark. (rather than 'trading blows').

Also the other SKUs Vega64 and Vega FE have been clocked up and volted up way beyond the point of diminishing returns on efficiency. This is in order to compete on raw performance with the GTX 1080 in gaming and Titan XP in professional applications. AMD knew that being so late they cannot lose to the 1080 on raw performance. Whereas the Vega56 is much closer to that optimal point in every architecture where you get the most perf/watt. It will still take more power than a GTX 1070, but now it is close enough that nobody cares (unlike the Vega 64 vs GTX 1080).

I'm going to say something a bit different. I would go with something in the performance sweet spot which is currently around ~$200. So maybe pick up a rx 470 which will be a bit bottlenecked by your cpu. But if you decide to upgrade your cpu, you'll get a great performance jump.

I bought an r9 280x from Asus when they first came out. The vram failed within a week. Sent it back for a replacement. The replacement failed in the same way. So I returned it and  bought an evga 780. I also bought a rogue swift from Asus which failed in 3 months. I got it replaced and seems to be working ok now. But yeah when it comes to Asus computer components so far they've had a 100% failure rate for me. And their support sucks so imo go with another manufacturer.
