Well that could be the case, usually you can only output via one path. Seems like your headset is the current path. Try to unplug your gaming headset, make sure the audio settings are correct & try again.

Should be fine for your purposes then, considering the clip-on mic is made by Audio-Technica.

Yeah, an audio interface has a better DAC than the standard built in stuff, that's for sure.

I'd still go for the M40x.

Well under $800 for both the headphones & dac/amp.

The M40x seem like a viable option in my opinion for great comfort/audio quality for those long Youtube sessions.
