Dwight got a reaction from survivingscout in Tech Gifts for Non-techies Giveaway!
So hear me out: most older folks aren't going to cancel their cable subscriptions. Sure, they'll use streaming services, but to enhance rather than to replace their sports/24-hour news needs. Remember TiVo? They just came out with this awesome product called the "BOLT." TiVo basically brought the DVR to most households, but I'd honestly forgotten about them in the last five years. And the thing is, to a younger person like myself, the BOLT is exactly four to five years too late. I've never had a cable subscription and probably never will. For my parents though, and I guess adults that have cable, this little box is the perfect melding of cable service and awesome streaming services. Let me sell you on this:

    1. The remote control actually has a dedicated "skip commercial" button. No need to skip forward thirty seconds or do anything actually: you just hit a button and it goes right to the program. How badass is that? I mean the box actually presents you with a dialog box: skip commercials? Bet your sweet ass I do. This wizardry is made possible because TiVo has real people watching TV and segmenting the commercial bits. So damn cool.

    2. You know how podcasting apps (and YouTube, actually) give you the option to speed stuff up a bit, like double time or 1.5x? This is actually a great way to get through long videos, like the WAN show, if crunched for time. The Bolt can do the same thing, but with TV! The setting is thirty percent faster than normal, with some fancy pitch control in the background to remove the squeaky effect. I really like the combination of commercial skip and this sped up deal. It allows more efficient consumption of some of the more lengthy sports (golf), but I bet my Dad would love it to get through the Sunday Morning shows we watch: "Meet the Press" and "Face the Nation."

    3. Obviously the thing is the world's most badass DVR, letting you record up to four shows at once (even in 4k), and letting you stream those shows to any device on your network. I think extending the Living Room experience to the rest of the house is good use of that cable subscription. Mom could watch her show from last night on the kitchen tablet while making lunch, streamed from the TiVo.

    4. Streaming services are straight up included in the box, so your parents won't have to mess with inputs. You'll just have to sign in to Hulu, Netflix, Spotify, etc... and they'll just have to turn on the TV to get it all going.

Did I mention that it can do all of that in glorious 4k?

    Finally,
I think this little guy is arriving to the market a few years too late, but it is an excellent buy for my Mom and Dad, and really many families, because they haven't cut the cord and probably never will.  The Bolt lets a family like mine get the most use out of their expensive ass cable subscription, while also adding modern streaming services to their television with no fuss.  The TiVo BOLT 500GB Unified Entertainment System:

So, this year, we decided to put together a fun little giveaway for all of the techies in our audience... the chance to give mom, or grandma, or WHOEVER in your life that isn't a techie a tech-focused gift for the holiday!

    The rules are simple:

    - Comment below telling us what gift (value of US$300 or less before tax and shipping on Amazon) you would want to give to your non-techie counterpart and link to that gift on Amazon
    - In your comment, tell us WHO you have chosen to potentially receive that gift (mom, grandma, neighbor, etc.)
    - Also tell us WHY you're getting it for them (eg. a new smartphone because grandpa still has a flip phone)

Make sure your gift is US$300 or less on Amazon.com. If a selected winner has linked to an item with a value greater than US$300 they will be re-drawn!

Winners will have 24 hours to respond here on the forum. If we do not receive a response in 24 hours, we will not hesitate to re-draw.

The three (3) winners will be selected on December 14. Once winners have been selected, they will be contacted by me here on the forum, and will provide the full shipping info for the recipient of their gift. Once we receive that information, we will order the winner's selected gift from the recipient's local Amazon and schedule for delivery by December 25.

There are no age or geographical restrictions to enter this giveaway.

Good luck to all, and happy holidays!

    EDIT: Winners have been selected!

@VictorC777 who selected a Canary All-In-One Home Security Device for their Mother
@Kibelok who selected a Ninja Ultima or the Instant Pot for their mom
And @KirbyTech who selected a point and shoot camera for their dad

Thanks again for entering, and happy holidays to everyone here

Earlier this month Linus and Luke were given an opportunity of a lifetime - to go to Germany and tour the Cherry MX factory. Of course they jumped on it, and they spent a pretty amazing day learning about Cherry and their practices...

WAIT HOLD UP. WE DONT WANT LINUS'S PERSONAL PC. The case has a lot of meaning to him guys. It was a gift from his wife. I believe it was the first gift from her too.
EDIT: Thanks for all the likes guys! Hopefully Linus or someone from LMG will read this and this will make Linus keep his build. Even if the goal of 100k is made we should convince Linus to do another build maybe, with signatures from the whole LMG family and maybe even his wife. This would let Linus keep the build he has with the special case his wife gave him. Besides, his personal PC would be more special to him than us.
