EdgyVenison reacted to corrado33 in Mac Users Deserve Better – 7 Unacceptable Problems with MacOS
I watched this video. None of these things are huge issues with MacOS.
Mac can't do snapping because microsoft patented it or some other bullcrap, besides there are PLENTY of free apps that do it better than windows does.
No idea why you'd want to create a file in a folder like that (something like a "touch" command in the terminal.)
As for separate volumes. I mean.... anything that has volume will have a volume slider. It's very.... very rare I need to use windows mixer. And, of course, there are apps that simulate this functionality if you want. I think soundflower does it.

Do people actually run apps, that is not a game or watching a video, in full screen?
I don’t think I’ve done that on niether Linux, Windows or MacOS since wide screen monitors became the norm.

Some thoughts about the problems:
Corner Snapping
I feel like putting this on the first of the order kinda made the issue look bigger than it seems lol.
My personal experience: I purchased and downloaded Moom almost 10 years ago and never really thought / spent much time about it since, so over the 10 course of 10 years (and counting up) I really only wasted about 30 minutes total around this problem. It's not so bad when you think about it this way right? 😅
Full Screen is Weird
I rarely use fullscreen, and when I do and I want to do something else, the first thing I will do is exit fullscreen, so this kinda feels a bit like a minor issue to me. Placing it on the second of the list also makes it bigger of a deal than it seems.
Traffic Light Inconsistencies
I think the traffic light buttons exist as the user-friendlier option for unfamiliar users, and having more options is good.
However in the long term, most users should get used to keyboard shortcuts more (Cmd+W, Cmd+Q, Cmd+Shift+F). I think I stopped using the traffic light buttons after the first year.
The problem highlighted in the video also feels very nitpicky: I personally don't (and don't know anyone that) fullscreen Notes, Calendar, or iMessages app. Or any apps really, I really only fullscreen videos I think.
Volume Mixer MIA
This is actually so bad and the developers of probably the best app to solve this knows it.
SoundSource is priced at a whopping 47$, but it does solve the problem. Fully agree and I wish macOS can do this out of the box

I think the tweet @just_dave brought up still holds true.
As shown in the tweet image, the M1 Pro die has 2 DISP EXT blocks, and for all intents and purposes, the macbook screen itself might as well count as one "external display" since it needs to be outputted somehow lol.
I think this explains why closing the lid allows you to use 2 external displays; one display feed (the macbook screen) is no longer in use, and the freed up DISP EXT can then be used to drive the second external display, so it's probably a hardware limitation and not an intentional market segmentation.

for the games you're looking to play a 970 would be a bit overkill.
that coupled with a dual core cpu with hyper threading it's not going to be the strongest of gpus. I'm not sure how well those games run on dual core/multi core setups.
I'd get the 960 personally

Am I the only person here using Alfred?
Seriously, everyone should install and use it; it really changes the way you use OSX.

EdgyVenison got a reaction from Builder in OS X Software Experience - iSwitched to Mac Part 3
Kinda disappointed. The way Linus did everything was very different from mine. The disadvantages pointed were mostly easy to fix.
- I never used spotlight to launch applications. I always use Alfred to launch apps, and keep my dock organized.
- I always use the Finder with the Column view to browse through files. These are the view options and this is how it looks like. It was not system-wide in my experience. I just had to set again in different folder and it stays like that; i.e. my Screenshots folder are in gallery view, the normal is in column view, sorted by name, arranged by kind, and my downloads folder are sorted by the created date, in column view.
- I rarely resize my window sizes manually. I use third party applications for that. While they are usually not free, free versions of this type of applications do exist!
My Mac is heavily personalized for my own usage at this point, but that's what makes me comfortable on using it.
In Windows, it's a lot harder, if not impossible to personalize the system to the same extent. The customization potential is far greater in OSX.
There are reasons why Hackintosh exist, and I believe this is one of it.
I'll leave my useful apps list post here again. #

@LinusTech
You know you can bind the desktop dashboard thing to mouse buttons right? I bind it to a side button then use that to switch desktops.
I don't like macs but I use them enough to know that. That's so simple. I mean come on you didn't have to use the magic mouse.

EdgyVenison got a reaction from Lynx in iMac 5k Retina Display
As a Mac heathen OSX user for 2 years, there are some apps which makes me don't want to go back to Windows, because there are no similar apps ( or equivalently good version ) of it in Windows.
Here is a list of the best apps that are nice to have, with links to their website and a quick summary:
Moom - "Move and zoom windows".
A better way to organize windows instead of dragging window corners around.
Alternatives: Divvy, Cinch, BetterTouchTool.
Alfred - "An award-winning productivity application for Mac OS X".
Gives you a magic bar that can do tasks for you. Definitely must install.
TotalSpaces - "The ultimate grid spaces manager for your Mac".
A quite powerful spaces (or more commmonly called desktop) manager in OSX.
TotalFinder - "Brings colored labels back to your Finder and more!".
An overall upgrade to the built-in OSX Finder app.
mpv - "A free, open source, and cross-platform media player".
Screw MPlayerX ( it's not bad, but IMO mpv is definitely better ), this is the best media player on OSX; you might have to compile it yourself though.
There are precompiled binaries here, or you can use Homebrew to help you on compiling it.
Homebrew - "The missing package manager for OS X".
Read post #59; don't be afraid of terminals, Linus
Alternatives: Fink, MacPorts.
Entropy - "Powerful Archiver For Mac OS X".
The most bloated fully featured archiver app in OSX.
Little Snitch - "Little Snitch protects your privacy!"
Probably the best firewall software on OSX. Useful for blocking connections and using illegal app copies.
Karabiner - "A powerful and stable keyboard customizer for OS X".
Unbelievably powerful keyboard customizer. Remap every key you want.
iStat Menus - "An advanced Mac system monitor for your menubar".
Shows various system statuses on your menubar.
Bartender - "Organize your menu bar apps".
It took me a while to find this app; it's awesome once you have stuffs cluttering your menu bar.
1Password - "Simple, Convenient Security".
The most expensive An excellent password manager app. Great UI, awesome browser integration.
There are free alternatives available on the internet.
SteerMouse or SmoothMouse
Allows you to disable the annoying mouse acceleration that is hard to disable manually on OSX.
I recommend installing this ASAP before you get used to it.
Textual - "An IRC client created specifically for OS X, designed with simplicity in mind.".
Arguably the best (paid) IRC client on OSX.
Thunderbird
Everyone's best email app forever!
There are lots of email app alternatives. However thunderbird starts to shine once you linked many email accounts into it.
The others seem to be optimized for 1/2 email account(s), unlike Thunderbird, which can still manage dozens of email accounts quite nicely. Cmiiw on this.
Growl - "The Ultimate Notification System for OS X".
Aims to be a replacement of the Notification Center, allows you to modify and control the appearance of notifications.

EdgyVenison reacted to NeoZeon in iMac 5k Retina Display
The funny thing is most mac users have used windows in some capacity where as many windows users have never really committed to learn how to use OSX. As if we, the mac user, are uninformed.
I don't know who the average mac user is. I live in a very closed bubble of scientists, in which my department has about 200 of them. We all use Macs. We have different priorities than playing Assassins Creed in 4k.
Grow up, we aren't you. Once you think you know you stop thinking. The same dogmatism that "apple" users are accused of is strong in the gaming community. If one day you learn how to think, you will be able to realize that people are different, have different needs. Perhaps they use OSX at work and just find it easier to have an OSX computer at home, because after a grueling day of work they don't want something different, but a homogenous experience. What rallying against mac because "windows is better" suggests is that what you value in life is better. How does anyone buying a mac hurt you? Does that stop you from upholding your own values? What do you think about?
