winny3141 reacted to TOMPPIX in NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 TI May Feature Maxwell Architecture
According to a report by Sweclockers, NVIDIA is planning to launch their GeForce GTX 750 TI in February. The most surprising thing about the report is that the GeForce GTX 750 Ti will not feature the Kepler architecture, but instead integrate NVIDIA’s latest Maxwell GPU architecture.

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Ti has leaked on several occasions in the past but it was never launched. My best guess would be that NVIDIA canned the card since the GK106 architecture failed to live up to the performance expectations and NVIDIA had to go back to the drawing board. Its still odd of NVIDIA to use the GeForce 700 series branding for the GeForce GTX 750 Ti whereas every new generation of GPU architecture gets a totally brand new naming scheme hence the Maxwell series should have been called GeForce 800 series. NVIDIA is currently using the GeForce 800 series branding on the mobility lineup.
We have been hearing reports that NVIDIA will start up the Maxwell lineup from bottom to top. This means the entry level and mid range cards would arrive first followed by the mainstream and performance tier cards. This could hint at why NVIDIA never launched entry level parts in the GeForce 700 series lineup since the desktop line-up only consists of GeForce GTX 780 Ti, GeForce GTX 780, GeForce GTX 770 and GeForce GTX 760. These are all high-end chips while successor to the GTX 650 Ti, GTX 650 Ti Boost and GTX 660 were never announced. NVIDIA could now launch several entry level Maxwell chips keeping the same branding scheme while launch the GeForce 800 series later when the high-performance chip is ready.

The GeForce GTX 750 Ti is totally based on the Maxwell architecture if the reports are true. It is based on the 28nm architecture since TSMC begins mass production of 20nm chips in Q1 so that’s out the question for now. Maxwell will be the first GPU architecture to feature Unified Virtual Memory which allows the GPU and CPU to share the address space. The hardware level integration helps improves memory management and reduces overhead. In addition to that, Maxwell based GPUs would be the first to integrate the Denver CPU which we saw at NVIDIA’s CES 2014 conference. The custom 64-bit ARM Dual-Core CPU will be fused on the PCB and would enhance the GPGPU workload by shifting load from the CPU on to the custom ARM cores. It will also be useful when running NVIDIA’s next generation FLEX (Unified GPU PhysX) processes.

Recent reports suggest that the first Maxwell desktop chip would be codenamed GM107/GM117 and would replace the GK106 in terms of performance. The GeForce GTX 750 TI will arrive in February and would replace the GeForce GTX 650 Ti Boost for a similar price range.

"Skybox Imaging based in San Francisco has been working on revealing the first public high resolution and definition video footage of Earth from 600 km above. The image resolution is fairly high, where anyone can easily observe objects such as cars, trucks, shipping containers, using the video recorded by the company’s satellite, named SkySat-1, which was launched in November.

“There’s an enormous amount of knowledge that we can glean from analyzing movement – supply chain monitoring, maritime awareness, industrial plant activity, environmental monitoring, and humanitarian relief monitoring – and we are excited to explore the breadth of possibilities with this unique data source. skybox official website”

The satellite is said to be capable of capturing full HD, 1920 x 1080 pixels, images at a 30 FPS for up to 90 seconds. Comparing a normal ground camera snapshot or clip with an orbital one is clearly not an option, since the two are completely different things. And having a satellite camera capable of recording a full HD clip for 90 seconds, given that the requirements for capturing an orbital imagery is quite high, is a big improvement."

winny3141 reacted to SchrodingersCat_ in "K" Supercomputer takes 40 minutes to simulate 1 second of brain activity
    Original Article: here

This is incredibly fascinating. A brain, which runs on something like 20 watts equivalent of electricity, is orders of magnitude faster than a supercomputer with 82,944 processors, 8.162 petaflops of performance, capable of 1,016 billion operations per second, has 663,552 cores and uses 12.6 Megawatts (12,600,000 watts) (Source: TweakTown and Wikipedia)

What "K" simulated: 1.73 Billion Neurons, connected to 10.4 Trillion Synapses, each synapse containing 24 bytes of data.
What is actually in the brain: ~86-100 Billion Neurons and 1 Quadrillion synapses in a child, and between 100 and 500 trillion synapses in an adult.

Fun fact: Some people calculate that the data storage capacity of the human brain is between 2.5 and 5 petabytes, that is equivalent to between 2,500 and 5,000 1TB hard drives! All stored in your brain!

The brain packs quite an incredible punch for such a small, lightweight (~3lbs), and energy efficient unit that can run on Cheetos and Mountain Dew. It is like the De Lorean from Back to the Future, just add organic matter!

Here is an interesting calculation for you, 40 minutes = 2,400 seconds, so I suppose that our brains are 2,400x more powerful than the "K" supercomputer. The supercomputer uses 12.6MW, so I calculated that if you had enough "K" supercomputers to equal the brain (you would need roughly 2,400 of them), the brain would be 1,512,000,000x more power efficient than the "K" supercomputer.

    Very rough Bitcoin mining calculations:
I did some research and some people here said that each core of the CPU's used in the "K" supercomputer would be capable of 327 Khash on SHA-256-based coins. So 327x8=2616 Khash per CPU (SPARC64 VIIIfx), and there are 82,944 CPUs. So the extremely rough average hashrate of the "K" supercomputer is 216981504 Khash, or roughly 216 GHash (Remember that this is CPU, not GPU mining). Multiply that by 2,400 (how many times more powerful the brain is over the supercomputer) and you get 520.75 Thash/s. So IN THEORY the brain is at least capable of 520.75Thash/s of bitcoin mining. Assuming that Scrypt coin mining is roughly 10% as fast as SHA-256 mining, the brain would be capable of 52.075 Thash/s of scrypt mining. With that kind of power, using your brain, in theory, you could mine $135,663.96 of bitcoins per day, running on only 20 watts, but according to CoinWars, if you were mining the most profitable coin you could, you could make upwards of $500,000 per day.

Disclaimer: These calculations are EXTREMELY rough, and are not to be taken literally. I am not responsible for that one guy who tries to upload cgminer to his brain which fails and then goes into a coma for the rest of his life.
    Calculated using this link.

The bottom line is, if your brain were a graphics card, it would, in fact, be able to play Crysis

Also, Titan Fall looks pretty good, but some of the Anime is just plane old weird. I mean, just look at Japanese commercials and you'll understand. There are a few diamond in the roughs, but a lot of anime watching consists of sorting through a pile of un-watchable, childish crap. But that is not to say I don't like anime, I love anime!

-Replaced LCD screen with OLED screen, will reduce motion blur/motion sickness
-The camera in collaboration with the white dots on Crystal Cove will provide better head tracking
-Can now lean and crouch because of the previous point
-OLED screen for Crystal Cove is a low persistence of vision display (ie, Crystal Cove INTENTIONALLY reduces what the player sees so that their brain can smooth out the VR)

EVGA GeForce GTX 780 Ti SuperClocked at 1046 MHz
The fact that there is a SuperClocked model most likely means that EVGA also has more GTX 780 Ti cards. There is a chance that manufacturer will launch an ACX model as well, especially after this post on Instagram.
The EVGA GeForce GTX 780 Ti SuperClocked runs at 980 MHz, which is a base clock, the boost clock is 1046 MHz. That means it’s 118 MHz faster than other GTX 780 Ti that we’ve seen already. Of course also this card will use 3GB GDDR5 memory. It’s worth noting that GTX 780 Ti will support QUAD-SLI configurations.
