CostcoSamples got a reaction from qboIodp in Mega Desk - build log
So I've got 3 computers at my house - two desktops and one laptop.  All of them are gaming capable, so I thought I'd build a desk big enough to accommodate all three.  My personal rig will be in the middle, with the two others on either side.  Features of this setup include:

    - Birch tabletop with Maple edging, dark brown stain with polyurethane finish
    - Three workstations along one wall, each having an ergonomic desk cutout (see photos)
    - Wall mounted cabinets (old Ikea cabinets cut up and modified for wall mounting)
    - Built in 5.1 surround sound with Yamaha receiver (to be connected to my main rig in the middle of the desk).  Sound system was previously for a home theater (ceiling mounted speakers)
    - Desktop computer cabinets beneath the desk with slide-out rails for easy access to each computer case.
    - Cable management

I didn't think of posting this until halfway through, so I don't have any earlier photos.  Sorry!

Step one - mount Ikea cabinets
Step two - procure supplies for desk.  Desk will be made of 3/4" plywood with Birch veneer, and maple edging.
Step three - cut plywood to shape of the desk:

The desk is just nearly 14 feet long, so I had to join two pieces of plywood end to end.  This is a very difficult task because in order to get that joint nice and tight, you need to have the two edges fit together.  Also, the walls are not perfectly square, so I had to cut the back and sides to fit the wall.  The technique I used to make the joint was to line them up as close as possible (leaving a small gap of 1/8") then splice the two sides together with some scrap wood from the bottom.  Using a straight edge as a guide, I made a cut along the joint with my router (using a 1/2" straight cut bit).  The router made a cut on both sides of the joint, and any imperfections in the joint are duplicated on both sides simultaneously.  It means that even if the cut is not perfectly straight, the two pieces still fit together perfectly.  This whole process of fitting and jointing took roughly 12 hours of work!

Once that was done, it was time to install the maple edging:

clamping onto a 45 degree angle is hard, and I didn't want any nails along the edge.  I came up with this system of screwing scraps on the bottom to clamp against.  It worked really well!  I got to the end and was about 3" short on maple!  The store is 45 minutes round trip so I just spliced on another scrap piece and you can barely tell.  Once the glue dried, I used my router with a 45 degree chamfer bit to chamfer the top and bottom of the maple edging.

After sanding it was time to stain it:

I was going for a black-brown, which isn't exactly what I got, but I like it anyway.  Three coats of polyurethane and the desktop is finished!

Next up will be the computer cabinets and cable management.  Hope you like it!

I don't get it, do they really think that the anticipation is going to make us want it more?  I just feel royally pissed off right now.

You can remove it but it will be pain the ass because some boards have screws on the back.

CostcoSamples reacted to Opencircuit74 in X570 chipset fans... necessary?
The X570 chipset uses around 7.5W, significantly more than is usual (>2x X470's 2.9W), which means a larger heatsink (or a smaller one with a fan) had to be used. You could unplug it and be fine, but the heatsink isn't designed to dissipate that much power passively, possibly causing damage to the board. TL;DR: Don't unplug it.

because it produces more heat than usual and it's expensive to make passive cooling that doesn't block PCIe expansion cards. Do not unplug the chipset fan.

They're pretty, they are compatible with aftermarket accessories like waterblocks, and they ensure that whenever we report performance numbers we are at a "consistent baseline".

Anyone who buys a config they see us build will get the same performance or better out of their GPU.

I totally agree.  Get an old used card for now if you must.  Give it a few months and see what happens.

honestly prices are far to insane to consider buying ANY cards right now (unless you manage to catch a Founders Edition card directly from Nvidia when they are in stock at regular MSRP price), unless you just NEED a GPU TODAY, there is no reason to pay these prices, so I would WAIT.

Personally I built my gaming desktop in the fall of 2016, I got the 6700k and everything else but my GPU (partly because I didn't have the budget for a GPU at the time) and just used it like that for the first 9 months and I'm happy I did, because in that 9 months time I was able to save up some money, the 1080ti's where announced and the pricing on the other cards went down, then I got super lucky and caught a killer cashback deal through an app my sister showed me that got me a 15% cashback (100 dollar max) deal ontop of the 15% off (20 max) and the 1.5% cashback of my credit card that allowed me to snag a 1080ti for under 600 bucks brand new, had bought at the time of building my rig I would have paid more then that for a regular 1080.

If you buy now (unless you get a card from Nvidia Directly) you will be very sorry you over paid by so much, NO GPU is worth what they are selling for now, I litterally built my entire computer for what this 1080ti is going for new https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIAB276X21001&cm_re=1080ti-_-9SIAB276X21001-_-Product

To be fair, Pai is right. The government trying to do anything with infrastructure is a fucking disaster. And it'll end up costing tax payers more money than if you just let companies do it themselves.

For anyone who has been following crypto currencies from the start, this has long been predicted.  One of the primary goals was to bypass currency manipulation.  To separate government from currency.  This is actually a good sign because it means government officials are starting to take notice.  You can't stop it though - the ban in China didn't change much.
