A lot of it does seem to stem from girls being discouraged from pursuing the education and hobbies that would lead to jobs in computer science.  I've seen numerous first-hand accounts from women whose high school staff or peers pushed them away from math and science because it wasn't something they 'should' do, not because of their skill at it.

I imagine that the ratios improve as you edge toward doctorates simply because the women who are willing to persevere are usually willing to continue all the way to a graduate degree.  I'm reminded of a high school classmate who was clearly both very bright and hard-working (it was common for her to get marks over 90% in math courses), and you knew that she wasn't going to let anyone stop her from pursuing her dreams -- she went on to get a PhD, research particle physics and (more recently) gain a professorship.  The problem, of course, is that there were likely other girls in school who could have done what she did but got discouraged along the way.

    Yes, it's true.
It's hard to measure something like that and it would depend on the company, but the statistics seem to indicate that it is - the sex distribution in IT management positions is lower for women than that in the IT industry in general. Google, for instance, has a workforce consisting of about 30% women, but only about 20% of management positions are held by women (though not everyone who works at google is a computer scientist or engineer, so IT specific data may vary).
Apparently, only 12% of engineers at google are female.

    Stats I referenced: https://www.techrepublic.com/article/the-state-of-women-in-technology-15-data-points-you-should-know/
it's an article from 2014, so current numbers may vary slightly. I think it still offers a good overview.

In the CS classes I followed and in all universities I've been to, the number of girls has been drastically inferior to the number of guys, though the ratio seems to become a bit better when you get to the doctorate stage. In my first year of university, studying IT Engineering, out of 120 students only 10 were female. I'm in Germany for an Erasmus at the moment and I have only seen a couple of girls in classes of 50+ people, so clearly it's not a situation that is limited to my local area.

As for why this is, in my opinion it has a lot to do with the stereotypes about computer science; girls are taught that it's a "boys' thing" and most media tends to show computer scientists as asocial and insufferable men who often exhibit some degree of misogyny. Even things like computer games, which are many people's first gateway into CS, are very often disproportionally marketed towards males even though girls can have just as much fun with them - as a kid I had some great mario kart races with my sister though she later lost interest, probably because of social expectations. Since you're a woman you probably experienced at least some of this growing up, though you may not have given it much weight.

With that said, I wouldn't let that discourage me if I were you; CS is a varied field and there are definitely plenty of opportunities to shine, even as a woman.

TV and the like most probably. Part of the problem is that, while there is a measurable wage gap (in the order of 10%) in most economies for which good estimates exist, after controlling for all obvious wage determinants, those figures are rarely quoted by media pieces and public figures. Instead, most broad audience outlets keep hammering completely raw, not controlling for anything, figures (in the order of 20-30%).
Hence, everyone willing to believe there's no such thing and unwilling to dig for proper studies will comfortably point at the flaws of those widely publicized figures and use them to confirm their prior beliefs.

Back in the good old days, when places on earths surface were yet to be charted and explored. Crazy drunkards would hop on sail boats and travel for hundreds of days trying to find new places to see, because they didn't have access to google images to see them in the comfort of their homes in front of their abacuses.
When finding new land, often these individuals would say "Hey, this place looks just like home, I am going to call it, "new home"". Then they would have a great piss-up, eat some foreign food that made them sick, suffer from scurvy, and head home to write a book or two about it.

Being worried, no. Thinking about, yes.

It's always good to plan for the future, and have some idea of what you want to do. That said, I know many many people that went through 2, 4 and even 7 years of university just to have a complete change of heart once they graduated and now do something completely different to what they spent years and tens of thousands of dollars studying.
Now, if you want to go to Cambridge, Oxford, or another foreign school, might be good to start saving unless your parents are quite well off

Most important thing, don't forget to enjoy your childhood. Go out and play. Get into trouble while you can. Once you reach your late teens everything gets a lot more serious.

This isn't like the Witcher 3 that took place in midevil Poland. It's in outer space literally has no reason to exclude other races from the customization screen. It actually follows up closely to what actual white racists fear and what black racists say. They are breeding us out (say that with a lack jawed southern accent and picture trailer trash saying that), then there's let's bred out evil whitey. Just don't know why it has to affect our gaming industry and why couldn't we pick to be a asari (or however you say it) have your standard stupid filth human presets and be able to play as a alien that would have been way cooler to me.

The point he is actually making which seemed obvious to me has actually been scientifically studied. Due to ease transport, less strict social norms, and so on and so forth, it's very possible that eventually a "single mixed" race will take over as the majority. This particular subject tends to be called "the race of the future." I don't care either way, especially in regards to ME since it's just a futuristic game and therefore has a lot of creative freedom.

kingkickolas reacted to Kolldog in 3.6 BILLION GB/S DOWNLOAD SPEED, THANKS DSL!
Been dealing with painfully slow internet speeds thanks to ATT, came home after work and found out ATT has somehow figured out how to send internet through black holes. I've tried everything possible with the router (on a 45mbps plan and usually get about 745kbps). Nothing has changed since getting the plan which used to provide about 25mbps, still slow but manageable. ATT is saying the connection is fine on their end, not sure how to remedy the situation.

kingkickolas got a reaction from Mr.Meerkat in Question about LEDs (less question, more like whether what I've written is correct)
Everything looks really good. The only thing I would change is some stuff in the last paragraph.
Yes increasing the current increases the power to the LED, emitting more photons. But it doesn't change the energy level difference in the atoms that emit the photons, so E=hf is the same regardless of the current (since E is the atomic energy level difference). It's just that increasing the current increases the dq/dt, so more atoms every second are being excited.

So yeah this results in an approximately linear relationship between current and brightness. There is some loss in the material which makes the curve fall off from linear slightly at higher currents (and power). Also, note that not all of the power into the LED (P = IV) is converted to light. Good LEDs typically have an efficiency of about 30% (although there's variation up and down), and the rest of the P turns into heat.

    Otherwise, yeah it looks good.

I have to agree, this is a very impressive bit of work! Well, until the last two lines...

Your conclusion is correct if A+B=0, but this is nowhere stated in the problem, and we cannot assume it! In fact, the conclusion is correct even if A+B is not 0, but we have not shown it yet!

What we have to do is find . That is, the value of g' at its local minimum (we know this occurs at the left-most point where g'' = 0, since g' is an overall-decreasing cubic). When you do this, you find that:
    .

And when you plug this into g', you get, in general, that , which in the case for B = A + 6 \sqrt{3}, gives 216! So this is true even if A + B is not 0 (which we were not justified to assume anyway).

I wish I had stuck with this problem more, I just forgot to apply condition 3 in your OP to only x > a! What a fantastic problem though, I won't soon forget it!

Yeah that blows. But consider that paying $80 for a $1000 laptop is pretty reasonable. They can't base the cost of shipping on the cost of the item.
So I'd suggest trying to buy local (as hard as that can be in some areas :/) for cheap laptops and stuff.
