  1. Wanted to always have a NAS at home and now I have most of the hardware, just missing the CPU, MOBO, and Potentially a RAID card. (IR/IT Mode?) Willing to go with Linux (Unraid? Freenas? not sure, hope someone could guide me on what's a good solution for my use case scenario.) Or... Windows Server 2016 Not sure if I should wait for the next generation of Intel CPU's, or just buy a used 7700k for $300 CAD or New Ryzen 5. (Saw an extremely good deal on a set of 32GB 3000Mhz DDR4 and couldn't resist, was the start of all this tbh ) Already own a Ryzen 7 system. The budget for the remaining parts is around $500-600 CAD but flexible. Use Case Scenario: Plex, VM (Learn Windows Server 2016/ Linux), General crap I've hoarded over the years. I already run VM's on my desktop but I would much rather dedicate hardware to run them. Hardware I already have are as follows. CPU: N/A (Guessing AMD isn't as good since I will lose 1 Graphics output option) Mobo: N/A (Must be mATX and have 2x Pcie 16x slots, can run 8x, 8x or split more) RAM: 32GB DDR4 Corsair Vengence LED 3000Mhz CL15 SSD: 1TB Mushkin Reactor (Cache drive probably.) Maybe SU800 512GB (Depends which one is not in use at the time of building I guess.) HDD(s): Toshiba DT01ACA300 3TB 7200RPM x2 (May get more, two I own are running pretty well for what they are in a heavy use scenario on desktop) Seagate ST3000DM008 3TB 72000RPM x1 (It's a seagate, don't expect it to last long tbh) Toshiba P300 3TB 7200RPM? (Might jump on these, but how similar are they to the other Toshiba drives I have?) Perhaps Larger drives/ NAS/ Server Grade down the road. Want to do a RAID 10 (Software, Hardware: TBD) with the SSD as a Cache drive. GPU's (for VM): GTX 950, NVS 290 (It's ancient, and just need a VGA to power a monitor...) Networking: 2 Gigabit ports (Will probably add a network card 1+1 so VM's will have their own connection or link aggregation?) Case: Fractal Design Node 804 PSU: EVGA 500W 80+ (Not a big deal, can upgrade down the road.)
  2. So, my friend wants to build a new system that he will use for rendering (Premiere Pro is the one he's planning on using but may switch to another one if he doesn't like it), Space Engine V2, light gaming, and "Research" (Folding@Home, GPUGrid, World Community Grid). With the focus being on the research part of things. Budget is $2500 CAD (Inc Tax 5% GST in AB) So before Tax will have to be below $2375 Parts already owned: SP550 240GB, Windows 10 His requirements: 4k IPS display, MITX, Corsair 380T ($180 Inc Tax and counts towards the budget) Also would I5 +1080 or I7+1070 work better in this scenario where research is more important than rendering?
  3. I have selected system restore but its still not responding. Also, I am trying to restore the image on the exact same hardware (Except the hard drive)
  4. Hi guys, Its my first time posting here so I am not too sure where to put this. I have an ACER V3-571G laptop that came with Win 8 OEM, I removed the 750 HDD (Backed up the OS first as a System Image) It had a lot of work that was important to me. I had kept the backup from Summer (2014-07-22) but now I want to restore the image and use win 8 easy transfer to put everything back on the my desktop but the laptop does not run win 8 anymore. so I installed 8 Enterprise Evaluation onto it but the OS will not recognise the image. I assume that the ACER was running Win 8.0 CORE at the time, I back it up, removed the hdd to desktop and haven't been using the original image since. I own 8.1 Pro/ am using Windows 10 Technical Preview. Some help on how to restore that specific image would be awesome. Thanks in advance.
