ChineseChef reacted to ThePointblank in Canadian border agents increasingly being nosey with tech
    Here's the issue.

At the border, under current Canadian law and legal precedent, you have less rights to privacy than if you were stopped at the side of the road by a police officer. The legal basis is that since you are presenting yourself to CBSA with a request for entry into the country, any goods you have on you, including your personal belongings, is subject to examination by a border officer to determine if it is eligible for entry into the country, under the Customs Act, RSC 1985, 98.(1):

    https://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/acts/C-52.6/page-27.html#h-75

Furthermore, under the Customs Act, RSC 1985, 99.(1), Customs officers have the legal right to examine any good entering Canada up until the good is released from customs inspection:
In addition, under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, SC 2001, 139, a officer has the legal right to go through your personal belongings:

Furthermore, under the law, if the officer has suspicion that there's something being hidden in a good or some form of illegality, they have the legal right to have the item seized for further examination under Customs Act, RSC 1985, 111:
Customs officers powers are also extremely broad, under Customs Act, RSC 1985, 153, it is illegal to do anything that might hinder a customs officer's ability to carry out their tasks:

Basically, if you have information that you don't want anyone else to see, keep it off your personal electronic devices at the border, and turn on airplane mode!
The same issue is true elsewhere; basically, the legal line of though is similar.

ChineseChef reacted to Syntaxvgm in Study suggests Dating Apps can stop "Sexual Racism" because people shouldn't be allowed to date who they like?
It's ok to try to make people consider someone they may not have looked for, and they might find them attractive. But judging people on who they choose is wrong. You can't be like "I don't prefer black people", especially just randomly out of the blue, but you'll make your choices silently and you should not be judged.

ChineseChef got a reaction from vanished in RCN Corporation stores passwords and security questions in plaintext
I feel like nothing will change even if large fines are levied, until a major company or country gets ruined due to back security practices.  And I don't mean they lose some money, I mean like some company that everyone knows gets completely hacked and has to shut down, billions lost, stock value dropping to 0 over night.  No one will care until they see a mega company fail over night cause of getting hacked, or having every single financial detail put online for the world to see, or just all their IP stolen and given away to the world.  Its gonna have to be a giant too or no one will care.  It will have to be so public, and so bad that no one can ignore it.  Or like a country gets its power grid shut down or something.  There is just no point for companies to care about cyber security at the moment, the damages are never enough to matter, just the cost of business.

Facts and reason are trumped by feelings for the kind of people who applaud these companies. Microsoft doesnt give a shit about their workers. How about all the ones they laid off? Where was their empathy then?

ChineseChef got a reaction from PlayStation 2 in Website for 3D printed guns to go back online
Not really, they have clay and ceramic and plastic bullets.  You can make some impressively accurate non magnetic guns and ammo.  That said, it is a silly argument in the first place.
On the high end assassinations, the "pros" will be using expensive gear, that is planted ahead of time, or just very well planned out.  But these are rare and really a non-issue.  And there is likely nothing you can do about this one, so its more of a red herring.
On the low end, it is probably cheaper and easier to just buy a stolen or low quality regular gun.  Gangs aren't gonna be getting 3d printers to make stealth guns because why would they need them when they can just steal or buy cheap guns?
And for the lone wolf actors, they will just plan accordingly to the situation they intend to go to/create.  And most of these people will be willing to die for their goal (at least when they are planning and start the attack).  And making home made guns is currently legal, and regardless of legality making a gun at home is virtually impossible to detect.  Between google and youtube, you can gain all the knowledge you need to make any gun you want.  Just need some basic machine shop tools.

ChineseChef got a reaction from Amazonsucks in Microsoft might move jobs abroad due to US immigration policies
While I agree the education system in the US needs some major fixing, the lack of skilled workers within the US is not the issue.  The issue is the companies don't want to pay higher wages, and at the moment they don't have to.  They can bring in a bunch of H1-B visa workers, pay them way less, and make them work in unacceptable conditions by just threatening to send them home if they complain.  This brings down everyone else's wages, same as what happened to the construction industry.  They use cheap foreign labor to lower average wages, then the cycle keeps happening and keeps wages down and conditions poor.  These companies are making record profits every year, yet somehow can't afford to pay people enough?  Its just our insane shareholder greed, demanding ever increasing profits beyond the point of sustainability.

Freedom of speech doesn't exist on the internet, just like how you can't go into work at picket your colleagues on your right wing agenda you also can't go onto a website and post anything you feel like then expect not to be punished because freedom of speech.

It's a privately owned space and rules can and will be enforced. Besides which FoS only exists in the USA anyway, the rest of the world doesn't have anything in place even remotely similar.

ChineseChef reacted to Sauron in Philosophers are building ethical algorithms to help control self-driving cars
The trolley problem isn't actually a real thing. There are always more variables and more options.
This is pretty ridiculous, it hardly takes half a million $ to run simulations on existing frameworks and quite frankly the philosophers' input seems pretty superflous. In the end, a perfect trolley problem (which doesn't exist in the real world, but let's suppose it did) does not have a fixed solution by its very nature.

I also find it extremely ironic that these philosophers believe they have the authority to make this decision for others. One of the first thing you learn in philosophy courses is that being a philosopher does not make you more right than others. Realistically, the way it's most likely going to pan out is that governments will introduce a law that values the life of most over the life of a few every time and the cars will have to abide by it, and this "research" will have been just a waste of money and time.

MS has been very much in the Willy Wonka method of stopping pirating.  Lots of "no, don't, stop", but no action.  They know it is better for them to let people pirate the software, since that will make the software more common place, making people more used to it, thus more likely to buy it, thus businesses will buy it so they don't have to train their people as much.  MS just has to put in enough effort so they can protect their product rights in the legal world.
