  1. jussi@Kanuuna:~$ showmount -e 192.168.1.101 Export list for 192.168.1.101: /mnt/Volume1 (everyone) So the share is visible to my computer, but I cannot mount it.
  2. Yes smb works just fine, I thought that mounting it straight to my home folder would be good regarding folder permissions.
  3. Okay so I'm having some trouble while mounting my NFS share from my Freenas file server. I have installed nfs-common package, but when I try to mount the share I get connection timed out after a while. sudo mount -t nfs 192.168.1.109:/mnt/Volume1 /home/jussi/freenas That is the command I'm using to mount, is there something wrong with it?
  4. It's not that i haven't been messing with CLI, it's just that I haven't used it enough to feel cozy with it. ATM I'm trying to figure out how to mount my NFS share from Freenas on my Ubuntu system It's a PITA.. all i get is connection timed out, maybe I will start a new thread
  5. Ok I hear you, not going to install a DE then I think i'm gonna go with a Ubuntu server install, as I'm most familiar with ubuntu based systems. Not going to destroy my Windows Server 2008 R2 install just yet. First I'm going to test drive the Ubuntu server on a laptop, so I'm 100% sure I can get everything up and running without much of a hassle. Thanks for your response!
  6. Have you determined what is the bottleneck in your setup? Are you running 100Mbps or 1Gbps network?
  7. I have a i5 2310 in my plex media server, but whatever ~3.0ghz i5 sb/ib should be enough for your use. I'm running windows server 2008 R2 and in the middle of migrating it to linux, i've been thinking about ubuntu server but haven't decided yet. I could also just use my Freenas file server, as it has the horsepower required, but I dont want anything to mess with my NAS. And there was one test which concluded that using Freenas as plex media server, gives you 1-2 streams less than other operating systems (windows server, ubuntu, debian etc.) with the same hardware.
  8. If i were you i would look for used sb/ib i5, it can handle plex far more better than that celeron. And don't use freenas if you you're only use is plex media server, it doesn't perform that well.
  9. Hello everyone! I'm migrating all of my systems from windows operating systems to linux based systems. I have two laptops and one workstation and they all run Ubuntu mate distros, which i really like. I also have a freenas box and my windows server, with windows server it goes a bit tricky. It really doesn't run anything much nowadays, only plex media server and cobian backup to manage my backups from the freenas box to a Buffalo Linkstation. So all my data is stored on the freenas file server, and windows serveri (cobian) makes a incremental backup of it everynight to the Buffalo NAS (which is really really slow, but is allright as a backup location). I really like to have a gui on my server which i can remote to and check the backup logs etc. So what kind of distro would you recommend for my needs? I was thinking about Ubuntu server and then installing the mate desktop with the following command: sudo apt install --no-install-recommends ubuntu-mate-desktop This should only install the DE with essential parts, no libreoffice etc. right? Is there something like cobian backup for linux? I really would like it to have a gui. Also my backups on the Buffalo NAS are in an encrypted container that is made with veracrypt, luckily it's avalaible for linux.
  10. I have used Linux Mint with MATE desktop for some time now, and it's the most stable combo I have used. No crashes *knocks wood* have occurred. It's not as pretty as Gnome 3 would be, but a lot more functional in my opinion.
  11. I do this on my htpc, just add a wirellex xbox360 controller and you're ready to go!
  12. So the topic says it all, what Linux distribution you use and why? I have been a Linux user for quite a while now, and have gotten used to use Ubuntu as my primary system. I also use Ubuntu in both of my servers, fileserver and general server (www, mumble etc.), and in my laptop. I do test other distributions quite often in my test pc, but none has convinced me to switch off from Ubuntu. The Unity desktops ease of use is just superb, and I can perform my day to day tasks like a baws! If I had to do serious working with my pc, and have like bazillion monitors, I would prefer something like Gnome 2 as my desktop environment.
