They moved the mounting holes between AM3+ and AM4. It would depend on the AIO and its compatibility list, and if you still have all the mounting brackets etc. it came with

    Hi all,
I saw the cookie banner on LTTStore.com and decided to do some digging. Even without interacting with the banner at all, the site sets a lot of its own cookies (some presumably custom, some from Shopify), but also a lot from Google, Facebook and TikTok.

This is clearly in breach of the GDPR (and member state law implementing it, it's kind of a mess...). If LTTStore.com actually needs all those cookies, then it doesn't need the banner at all (per the GDPR, anyway), but clearly all the analytics identifiers aren't required for a web store to work. Consent should also be given "for one or more specific purposes", a blanket "accept" button isn't compliant IMO.

And "our site uses cookies to ensure you get the best experience" is weasel-word nonsense. That's sadly not illegal, but disappointing nonetheless. Shopify's own cookie banner on their docs site is much better, so presumably adopting something like it for the store shouldn't be hard.

You (LMG) can take the stance of "we won't move a finger for anything less than an import ban" and probably be a successful business. But considering how much of LTT hinges on reputation, I'd like to think you might actually care about this.

That's actually really surprising that it wasn't already! It's like the most Linux-y game ever made (At least in my head, idk if that makes sense)

    Summary
On September 19th Dwarf Fortress, a beloved ASCII Dwarf colony simulator in development since 2002, has finally been released with support for Linux!

    My thoughts
I think now is a great time to look at dwarf fortress if you've never heard of it, it's made by two guys as a passion project that have been working on it since 2002. It's been notoriously a windows only game for a long time, but now it's available natively on Linux!
To understand the history of this game:
I think this is a big deal, it means I can finally play the game on my linux machines, but it also means the game is more easily available to players, so it deserves recognition

Connections between the computers will be 1Gbit. Routers speed only comes into effect for internet connectivity, not local.

Here's some pictures, I did it in a Define R4. Had to cut a hole in the 5.25" bay and had to cut the socket backplates down to normal size. THen finally to fit the HDD cage back in I had to install it wonkily.

Overral though I'm quite pleased, just need to work out what's up with the GPU. It's showing up in Furmark as being in crossfire for some reason, and it keeps dipping down utilisation to 60% every ten or so seconds.

EDIT:: Also there's a USB3.0 card in there off ebay, a Wifi Card and a SATA3 card in the bottom slot, haven't tested the speed of the SATA3 card yet.

The Crucial BX300 holds up well, as do old high-end drives like the Samsung 850 Pro and Sandisk Extreme Pro. Considering the price, the BX300 would be the better choice.
Oh they definitely should. Especially with a low-end SSD like the V300. Just check the differences on this test between empty and full. The V300 would probably do worse than any of the drives on the graph.

    hello,

i want to put an ssd in my ms-dos pc. a really small one. it's a pentium mmx machine with 16 mb ram.
i want to do this because all of the old harddrives that i have are breaking, and i want to put something more reliable in.
it will be running Windows 95, but will be booting to Dos 95% of the time.

is it possible to to this? and with what adaptors? will the machine even recognise it?

Pyroven got a reaction from PCGuy_5960 in FX-6350 to Dual Xeon X5660 Upgrade
It's all in this Imgur album I've made.

Basically for £100 I bought two Xeon X5660 and a Tyan S7012 Motherboard to replace my FX-6350.

The interesting part about this is the overclocking and I'm sorry to say that due to a lack of webpages about overclocking dual xeon X5600 Series processors I just had to make a call on which I thought looked the most likely to support it.

Thankfully the CPU multiplier was unlocked up to a maximum of 21x, which meant I could set the base frequency to 2.8 GHz up from 2.4GHz rather than that being the turbo frequency, and the turbo went up to 2.9GHz, so that's cool. Unluckily however the Base Clock could not be altered, so this is the limit it will go to on this motherboard. May other curious googlers learn from this thread.

I could've learned that had I read the PDF manual properly before buying. I was far too excited to sit still through a whole manual though, but I'll know for next time.

So what's the performance like? Pretty much the same for gaming as before, but now rendering a video takes 20% CPU usage rather than the previous 60% and I think Minecraft got a big boost but it's impossible to benchmark that game reliably so who knows.

The GPU is definitely the bottleneck in this build.

I can't think of anything else people might want to know, so please ask any questions which cross your mind

Thank you for reading and I hope this helps someone out there.

    EDIT: Album Fixed

Good stereo headphones will do just fine in surround, if not better due to higher overall sound quality. If you need further surround effects, Razer's surround software is FREE and works with any headphones.
Gaming headsets themselves are very expensive for the quality you get, so a common recommendation for people who bother doing their research is to get proper stereo headphones from an audio company and pair them with a clip-on or a desktop mic.

Currently, looking at amazon.co.uk, there are good deals on Pioneer SE-1000 (open), CHC Silverado (closed) and Sennheiser 518 (open) headphones. Open headphones tend to have wider soundstage (=better surround effect) and a bit more "life like" sound signature, but leak some sound and doesn't isolate you that well from outside world (=not good if you live next to a turbine or something loud like that). Closed headphones have a bit more bass oomph and isolate you better, but have narrower soundstage and more "in your head" sound signature.

Zalman's ZM-MIC1 clip-on mic is very cheap (around £8) and is as good as any gaming headset mic. It attaches to the headphone cord so its not too much of a hassle.

If you must have a headset, then HyperX Cloud (or QPAD QH-90 which Cloud are rebadge of) is the best option for your budget since they are made in co-operation with a real audio company.
