  1. So I did a backup of a customers SSD using Macrium Reflect. Basically I just used the disc imaging tool and copied the whole disc. Now I am running into a NTFS permission problem. I take ownership of a file but when I click on the file it simply won't open. Usually get a output of not a supported file format even though it is or missing part of file.

If you are going to use Dahua there are a few things to keep in mind.

    - Keep it completely Dahua, While Onvif should work, its hit and miss with different brands. Dahua only means there are 0 worries.

    - The camera's and recorder work with plugins if you set it up via the browser. So either run the old ie.exe or get the chrome app (you'll get prompted when viewing with Chrome).

    - Dahua has a P2P service wich works perfectly for free, BUT you'll need to agree to the terms which only can be accepted via a screen attached to the NVR. Via the browser it wont work. (latest firmwares)

Is the P2P service available through an app?

Another thumbs up for dahua, price performance wise they are very good. Their low light camera's are some of the best i have seen.

Also they have the added benefit of supporting up to 4K(15fps) via coax cable which was used for analog camera's alot.

Redid an old building with 3MP camera's without needing to remove the old cables which saved alot of time and money.

Vs another project in which we had to use Axis with coax to ethernet adapters, which at 200-300 per set was costly :S

There's this Chinese brand called Dahua that makes amateur to pro camera equipment, from analog to digital, cameras, phones, drones and recorders. I've installed a bunch in a few businesses and i have to say, i was really surprised. Some of the older cameras are running for about 4-5 years now and i haven't had an issue with them yet. Also quite cheap.

Those look impressive just on paper for the price. Plus like mentioned there is BNC coax already run so this would make my life so much easier. I would definitely crimp some new connectors on but other than that it would cut my labor in half!!

    I very much like! :D

Axis has been my personal fav. for a few years now, they are great Cheap network cameras.

Do you know how those would compare to something like Ubiquiti? I see the Axis product generally are running about $100 more than UBNT.

  5. I got contacted by a friend of mine to come out and look at some camera's at his business. Hes currently running a mix of fisheye and bullet cameras and all of them are analog. Its a Nuvico branded system but literally can't find any model or information or anything that remotely resembles the installed DVR. The equipment is about 15+ years old and over half of the cameras aren't working. Sometime this week I'm going to go out and do some more digging around to see if working with his old equipment is even an option. I want to be able to give him a couple possibilities however and wanted to ask what your guys favorite camera systems are?? If I'm putting in new equipment I personally would like to go poe and run everything back to a central server however I would like opinions on that too.

    Thanks

  6. I recently fixed an iPhone 6S for a friend. A couple weeks later the backlight started messing up on one corner of the screen. I bought another screen of a different brand but it did not solve the problem, I offered to actually buy her a new phone. I felt bad that it could have possibly been my fault. The next day after she left my house that night before I noticed something was missing off my desk. I hadn't touched the thing in forever and knew that it was there before she came. I messaged her about it and she immediately denied knowing anything about it and said if I didn't give her $600 that she was going to file a lawsuit. Could that even be a thing???

Laminate countertop is a little overkill as just a storage surface, you can get white melamine particle board, that is what’s commonly used for shelves and doesn’t readily sag like MDF under heavy load.

For support running a 1x3 or thick piece of molding along the walls should be enough. You can add an extra strip of wood long the front to give it extra support if heavy stuff is being put onto it.

I never even thought about that stuff but that sounds like a much better idea. You think it would be okay with just a 1x3 or 1x2 around the back and sides? It won't have more than like 50lbs on it. Just misc. storage and a very small tower server.

  8. So I'm looking for a RAID controller under $100. It only has to have at least 4 SATA ports or if it's SAS I can get the breakout cables (cables not included in $100), I don't necessarily need a write cache, they're just being used on a Plex server.

Its going in a standard mid tower style case so PCI/E with a full height slot.

  9. So I was thinking about putting laminate countertops in my closet as shelving. I have those white wire shelves right now and I absolutely hate them, stuff falls through the wire and its hard to set my server on. I have no problem doing the work and putting in the laminate countertops but the only question I have is what is going to be the best way to support these? Countertops are meant to set on cabinets wheres theres support all the way across the bottom. Would a 2x4 brace work across the middle?

    Thanks

  10. Has anyone ever wall mounted their computer monitors? I'm looking into a set of 32" monitors and I thought about maybe wall mounting them right above the desk. I thought it would give a clean and simple look but the only thing that worries me would be the inability to be able to adjust them horizontally but I don't think it would be bad, especially if they were a matte display.

    Ideas?

  11. So I pulled my jeans out of the dryer this morning only to see a neon green thumb drive, case half melted.... lying on the bottom of the dryer. Whoopsie

So I figured it wouldn't work after being through a wash and a dryer cycle but I plugged the thing in and my computer loaded the drivers and opened file explorer and my Windows 10 ISO is still there. Still boots so I was very impressed even if this thumb drives victory is short lived... Which it probably is xD

Its just a cheap $10 Sandisk 16GB drive, all plastic housing.

what are you using the drive for? How much endurance do you need? What interface? How much write performance do you need? Do you need powerloss protection? Whats the sepcs of the server?

Basically only need the drive for operating system, and programs such as Plex, Ubiquiti UniFi controller, and random other programs... Putty, etc.

All of my Plex media and backed up files are stored on a separate RAID array of hard drives.

Server is fairly barebones, 8GB RAM, Xeon quad-core (non-hyperthreading). Interface is PCIe 3.0

  13. I've been crazy busy the past year but I've got a new job now as a network engineer. I'm getting back around to finishing up some projects and I would like to put a NVME PCIe SSD in my home server.

Any recommendations on what PCIe SSD is best right now? Looking to stay under $500 or near**

Im kinda pissed it got canceled without a real ending. If you cant find a blue ray online then maybe they didn't do a 1080p release. Actually according to the Wikipedia article, they in fact did not do a Bluray release at all in any region. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stargate_Universe#Home_video_release

I found it in 1080p on iTunes and ehhem... cough cough. Somehow got it into Plex:P

Same tho, I really wish that series would've lasted longer. I know it was different than all the other Stargates before it but I still really liked the series.

  15. So I thought Plex would play pretty much any format? I had some video files that were MP4 and my computers would stream them through Plex however my SmartTV would not. Sure enough I converted them to .mkv and whala. Everything works again.

Can anyone tell me why this is? Is it the TV that isn't compatible?

Thats the problem. My friend uses a Comcast modem/router, it wont port forward worth a shit. You might need to contact your ISP can see if they can do it for you. Because they have access to your modem/router and can access any setting.

I have access to all the settings too lol

Have you rebooted your router after applying those port forwards? I've some funky, truly unexplainable issues with port forwarding like that with my netgear R7500 router.

EDIT: Also, have you tried not mix-matching the ports, like just make both LAN and WAN port 32400?

No I haven't restarted but applied the settings which kinda performs a soft reboot.

Yes I did try making them both the same, still didn't work.
