  2. Paragraphs are helpful. Post a screenshot of task manager with everything running. "using space" on a hard drive does not equate to running programs. I have 4TB filled on my RAID's but it is completely meaningless in regards to what my CPU is actively doing.
  3. An HDD that's on death's door could cause a number of problems. Only way to test would be using another drive.
  4. You seem to have forgotten the 1.1GHz OC you have enabled.
  5. IF the CPU was damaged by voltage degradation (big if) you're going to need to use more voltage, not less, to get it stable. Undervolting to the extreme level that you have tried is never likely to work, that's the nature of voltage degradation. IMO run it at 1.35v, see where your maximum multiplier ends up, avoid P95 like the plague, and call it a day.

  9. Buy a used 290X, even a 280X for 1080p. Half the price of a new 970. This is coming from someone who sold his 970 SLI's and bought a used 290X 8GB (nearly impossible to find). At 1080 the 4 vs. 8GB is a moot point unless you plan on using DSR, I play at 1440p and the 970's just couldn't handle some games with HD texture packs. 970 just isn't good value for money at $330+ USD, regardless of power consumption. At this point whatever you buy will likely be replaced by the end of the year, so why waste more money than necessary?
  10. Yeah, running it on the laptop isn't going to be any better. The i7-6500U is essentially a lower clocked desktop i3 (2c/4t). He would need an i7-6700HQ to get 4c/8t, but I looked, and any machine on that site in that configuration is way out of the price range. Even the i5-HQ series are 4-500 above your budget.
  11. You can run the system with nothing in the CPU_Fan header. Just disable that header's monitoring within the BIOS, you can swap whatever is plugged into it to another header. Make sure you plug it into a 4-pin header as the MCP50X ramps with PWM. If you haven't already make sure the header is running in PWM mode instead of DC (change in the Q-Fan section of the BIOS). If it's already in PWM mode you can try alternating to DC and see if that gives you any kind of difference in temps. If you wanted less noise a D5 variant with flow control would have been the way to go, and you wouldn't have to deal with PWM controls. http://www.overclock.net/t/1516369/my-review-of-the-swiftech-mcp50x-pump
  12. You're limited by two main things in regards to AutoCAD, CPU and GPU horsepower. I filtered by i7 (Skylake only) and 1920x1080 as working below 1080 in any CAD software is not a fun experience. There were a couple options sub 1080 if I remember correctly under 15", but none leaped out at me as good value for money. Just so I'm clear on my opinion of this, none of the laptops available here would be suitable for a sole AutoCAD production machine. They all will just "make due" as a temporary project editing suite, I think I would lose my mind if I had to use a laptop as a primary project development platform. I haven't had my fingers in the AutoCAD space in quite a while so I'm not up to date on their overhead requirements but as soon as you enter the 3D modeling space life begins to suck without at least a desktop grade i7. That being said, I have been impressed by the Skylake gen mobile offerings. It would be more economical if you could get away with a laptop using solely integrated graphics, but I would need to get my hands on AutoCAD again to do any kind of testing without a dedicated GPU. How well this is going to work is also going to be highly dependent on the types of files that your brother is editing. AutoCAD has a huge range of variability in hardware requirements depending on the project size and complexity.

  14. Are you trolling? I honestly can't tell anymore. Half of these questions can be answered by looking at pictures or a spec sheet. If you don't like the look of the thermal armor it can easily be removed and painted to match whatever theme you want to go with.
  15. It works? Powers up to my 250ohms, little loss of quality without my inline amp/DAC on that pair. I don't have FLAC files or HD800/DT990's sitting around to really push it. I also don't do any kind of studio or professional mixing, games are really all I care about when it comes to audio and it performs adequately.
  16. The same or more. Sabertooth has an additional EPS for the CPU, I would guess there's some crazy LN2 settings buried in my BIOS somewhere. Again, there was no difference in my OC between either board. Core 4.625 cache 4.375
  17. ? no board has any features that would facilitate water cooling unless there's a block on-board. The socket placement is virtually the same across all boards. Not sure what you mean.
  18. Yes. Look at a picture of the I/O Every OC feature I can think of. Not an ideal board for DICE/LN2 as the thermal armor would have a tendency to hold moisture, and it would be a PIA to dam up.
  19. In what terms? All X99 boards come with nearly the same feature sets. The only things that separate them from each other are the PCIe lane layouts, OC sockets, on-board wifi/bt, and controller producers. If you wanted specifics the main features I use are the M.2 slot (NVMe boot drive), segregated SATA controllers for RAID arrays and a normal AHCI array. It has dual NIC's but I don't use them, only the Intel NIC. These features aren't unique to the Sabertooth, the only reason I'm using a Sabertooth in my main machine is the 5 year warranty.
  20. 5 year warranty for the Sabertooth. Slightly less PCIe lane compatibility/functionality than the Pro. If you don't need on-board wifi/bluetooth it's a moot point (only the Pro has it). My OC/voltages didn't change going from the Deluxe to the Sabertooth, there should be no performance difference at all.
  21. Are there any post codes? Is there a speaker output plugged into the MOBO that beeps? Have they tried a different PSU? Does it make it to the BIOS splash screen? How long is it on before the system shuts down? Have they reseated the 24 pin and 4/8 pin CPU power connectors? Has the system every been fully operable? *edit* what board, CPU, and PSU are being used?
  22. I had a similar issue with my old X58 board, not the performance issues, but when I had my 980X OC'd that NB got toasty. If I remember correctly almost all spring type retention mechanisms are secured from the back of the MOBO. Should be able to flip it over and find the 2 or 4 screws. Just make sure you hold down the spring on the opposite side or things will go flying.
  23. If it's 5 years old whatever TIM material is under the NB is probably crapping out. I would unmount the heatsink (assuming it is easily removable) and clean off whatever is there, apply new TIM, and remount.
  24. What MOBO are you using? and have you overclocked? Could be VRM throttling.
  25. Without an appropriate BIOS you won't be able to OC the 6100. As far as the RAM goes, just select the XMP profile in the BIOS and it should run at rated.
