  1. I'm not surprised. Unfortunately TV manufacturers have been doing this exact same thing for the past 2 years, including this years models. Many of them "support" HDR10, as in they can take the input and process the metadata, however only have 8-bit panels to output to. Some TV manufacturers this year and last have taken an intermediate step where by they advertise a "10 bit-panel" however you find its 8-bit with 2-bit dithering. Very rarely do you find a true 10-bit panel apart from the much higher end.
  2. I'm sure this is a repost from something a few weeks ago Edit: repost of this?
  3. You technically have a device/filesystem mounted to the system as read/write, where as snapshots are read-only and cannot be changed. I understand your point about it only being visible to the host OS only and no connected clients, however you couldn't rule out the host itself being infected by a specific ransomware. Very unlikely but still plausible in my eyes.
  4. In my opinion, a filesystem like ZFS with its snapshotting is pretty safe from ransomware, as they are read-only and cannot be modified once taken. Having said that, for stuff that is irreplaceable and mission critical, it should not be the sole method of backing up. Same as your other proposed solution, it also should not be the sole method of backups. For home users and perhaps small businesses, a combination of the two will work very well. NAS with snapshotting, external disk or secondary NAS for replication/offsite/secondary backups. Edit: So just to answer your original post, IMO the harddrive method is no safer than snapshots, in-fact if anything its a little bit worse off.
  5. Is there a filesystem/OS in particular you are talking about using?
  6. I assume the internet still works fine then with the cable connected? Have a look on the router admin page during the issue and see if there is anything obvious. The only thing I thought it would be is that the internet connection is being dropped and in turn perhaps the router was disconnecting Wifi clients too, but can you confirm the internet is working when this issue occurs?
  7. If it happens every morning, have you tried using a cable to see if you can get on that way? Make sure you disconnect the wireless so it doesn't try to use that connection still. Is it the Chrome "Can't connect" error or some other page displaying the error? Have you tried using developer tools (press F12) to see what it is failing to load?
  8. Same for me, there is something about a a good old classic RTS that I miss these days!
  9. I'll have a look at that! Sorry I meant did you get the same issues with AoM that you stopped playing it or just not into it?
  10. Did you experience the same issues? I felt AoM was a cash grab also, its a shame as it was one of my favourite games when I was a kid.
  11. Ah OK that's reassuring to hear then I guess, I have no idea why they did such a terrible job on AoM, you would think it would have been one of the easiest jobs they could do. There was so many bugs, hundreds of complaints from people on Steam who had bought the game and they barely ever responded to everyone, took over a year and a half to fix the performance bug they had where it would severely drop frames the more units you had in view. Even users with like 4790k's and GTX 980's were dropping to like 15-20 FPS.
  12. I was literally just away to comment this when I seen yours, they royally destroyed AoM with the amount of bugs in it and absolutely abysmal performance for a long long time, took them ages to "fix" it. I don't even get how they could introduce that many bugs into a game that they barely changed that much on. All they needed to do really was update the textures, maybe tweak controls ever so slightly if required and release it. That was through Skybox Labs though, are they doing this one? I just checked the website though and didn't see it mentioned on their site but maybe its too new. I know they did AoM and Age of Empires 2 but hope they are not doing this one.
  13. OK I cannot explain it to you any other way. In my opinion he was trying to build the same PC as the hardware in the Xbox to show that the cost was the same. However the main point is that when you total everything up in his build, the price comes out to over $300 dollars minimum (when the Bluray drive, Harddrive, OS and a cheap keyboard and mouse are added) than the Xbox, which isn't a small number at all.
  14. I don't disagree with that, but your still missing the point, your paying for an 8 core AMD CPU on the Xbox. So when trying to build the same PC to show that the value isn't great, you should use the same costing parts to show that the value isn't that great on the Xbox if that is what you believe.
  15. No you've mistaken what I was trying to say, I meant the CPU is wrong in terms of price, it doesn't cost the same. Edit: As proven when I said in that quote above "I'm not saying the CPU can't handle it"
  16. For the 4th time, I'm not saying his CPU choice wouldn't have worked.
  17. That's my point, he failed to make an equivalent comparison but he thought he did. Good point about the cost of peripherals and OS which in that case blows the cash comparison out of the water.
  18. Here you go, I have edited your list to add in a harddrive and a bluray drive (keeping your cheaper CPU which you can't seem to let go off), is this what you would call the same price as the xbox? https://pcpartpicker.com/list/kwrV9W
  19. Once again proving you cannot seem to understand, I've literally said nothing on performance I have said multiple times talking PRICE only. I am not saying your CPU performs worse, I am saying it isn't an equivalent price. But you keep harping on about performance. And again, I am not advocating it is a good buy, I'm saying you were trying to compare price of Xbox to price of a PC with the same hardware, except it wasn't the same hardware was it...
  20. Obviously it makes more sense because it is more equivalent in terms of rough price to compare 8 Core AMD FX plus motherboard than it is to compare a dual core Intel CPU, one of the cheapest CPU and boards you could find so it would look better for your argument. If you could show me where I shifted the goalposts that would be great? I have to disagree with you, I think the hardware they have managed to get into this is actually pretty good value, when you work out the true value of things that is...
  21. I have to agree, as a member of another very popular AV forum, I know many many people who bought the Xbox One S purely for the UHD Bluray aspect, as for the money it is simply unmatched when compared to standalone players which do not have nearly the functionality.
  22. I'm afraid it is you who is missing the point. To dumb it down for you, I am not saying your CPU is better/worse than and AMD 8 core, it has literally nothing to do with that. I am saying, put in equivalent parts to get a better idea of price. Christ. Did I say it was feature worth buying it? I am still talking about price, something you can't seem to get your head around.
  23. Look up the definition of "requirement" it says "a thing that is compulsory; a necessary condition" which is something that Xbox live is not, can the Xbox play games without Xbox live?
  24. Please tell me, how much is a UHD Bluray drive for PC? Don't say "I don't use it" as that's not the point. Please also re-do your PC part picker list with the drive and an 8-core CPU and it will look much better, no need to get all touchy about it I'm simply pointing out your list wasn't really equivalent, I'm not saying the Xbox is something I would buy in the slightest.
  25. You said "Don't you HAVE to pay" - no you don't HAVE to pay for Xbox Live subscription.
