azurite2 reacted to Electronics Wizardy in Setting up multiple apps on a server
Id say its not hard, but relly depends on skill level.
I wouldn't set this up for my paarents, as your now support for anny issues. Id just use google drive or simmilr to sync files, and stream media from streaming sites.
But if you really want to id get a synology or similar. They have good software that does a lot of the hard work for you, like port forwarding and ddns, and they hve good software and apps for syncing files.

azurite2 reacted to PlayStation 2 in Putting Console Video Input Through PC?
I don't have an Elgato HD60 Pro to use but I do use a capture card for a decent amount of PS2 and Xbox 360 games. The latency was hardly enough for me to care.
What program do you plan on using to view what input your capture card is getting?
-
azurite2 reacted to TheGreatSora in Putting Console Video Input Through PC?
I have a razer ripsaw capture card, i use it to view consoles from windows and honestly i don't perceive much or any latency and been running this setup for years. i would think the elgato would be better since its running PCIE instead of USB 3

1. But does it turn on with both batteries or neither?
2. have you tried the 'obvious' like cleaning out the charging port?

Post a clearer pic of that screen again please? Ensure the whole message is in the shot. The one above is partially cut off

Or a paper and pen. It's cheaper and it's more hands on.

Aero 15 has baller battery and a 1060, Alienware 13 is the same. Both are fantastic, light and powerful devices well under budget

This laptop I have isn't classified as a gaming laptop perse but it's still good. Do you want the specs and name of the laptop I have for reference?

Way too much effort, There is maybe a Raven Ridge laptop out, or about to be out
it's from HP, but you have to upgrade the RAM yourself because for some insane reason they halved their GPU performance by going with single channel RAM, gotta check the rest as well. "
$734.99

You would be better off having a laptop that has a hyperthreaded dual core processor because:
1. IF configured, you can disable hyperthreading in class and opt to a power savings option while in class.
2. when in your dorm room or at home you can enable hyper threading for higher performance.
secondly, if you are going to do some gaming then get (IF you want to of course):
1. EXP GDC BEAST v8.0 external graphics card dock.
2. GTX Geforce 1050 ti (great budget card for 1080p, 60fps.)
However! BEFORE you buy those, consider the following:
if you are going to get these items, please make sure that the laptop has an NGFF or mPCI-E slot, otherwise you won't be able to connect an eGPU (the eXP GDC BEAST I mean.)
If the laptop has a dedicated M.2 slot, PLEASE make sure that it is PCI-E based and NOT SATA-based. It will NOT work if it is SATA-based.
if the laptop has ONLY an NGFF slot or an mPCI-E slot then there will be a WLAN card occupying it.
Also, make sure it is a laptop that is able to use the unofficial dock. Most laptops will have whitelists or things that can be used while others can't be used in that slot. Like a picky 8 year old in otherwords (just an expression.)
It shouldn't cost you any more than $400 if not $500 altogether.
or
You can get this laptop instead: http://www.eluktronics.com/w650kk1
everything you need is inside (if you add whatever you want in the drop-downs or the options you want to order with the laptop.)

Oh ya, Coffee Lake Laptops are on the way as well? Or have a limited current launch?
Whatever, this one is under $1000, probably poor build quality, poor battery life, no idea if the screen is IPS but it has a quad core i7 and 1060 and is cheap

Isn't almost every gaming laptop going to have bad battery life? Also I think the main draw there is the 8 core CPU. the APU laptops are going to make a lot more sense it looks like.
-
azurite2 reacted to Streetguru in College Gaming Laptop suggestions
Do you actually need a gaming laptop? Like do you really need a 1060 for on the go?
As I would highly suggest waiting for Ryzen laptops in general, then you either get an APU 4c/8t + Vega it looks like with decent battery life and esports gaming performance, or an 8 core almost secondary desktop machine. The ASUS one comes with free-sync as well.

Ive been very happy with my MSI GS63VR. It's fairly light to carry, batter life is decent too. and best of all its on sale on new egg currently https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834154674&utm_medium=Email&utm_source=IGNEFL111017C&cm_mmc=EMC-IGNEFL111017C-_-EMC-111017-Latest-_-GamingLaptops-_-34154674-S0E&ignorebbr=1
Looking closer that is actually an older generation with skylake not kaby lake CPU. Still a great PC though.

azurite2 reacted to Verrierr in Isolating a Jump Drive
That won't do then. While the OS of the school computer won't be able to manage what's on your jump drive, it won't give your home user administrative rights either. If you did what I said above to your jump drive you wouldn't even be able to see what's inside your jump drive at school. I think the only way to bypass the settings of permissions in your school would be to use software generally referred to as malicious (rootkits).
Edit: And that's wrong. Obviously.

Should be fine. In vr you don't set the graphics settings.

azurite2 reacted to ogretactics in What Phones do YOU like?
iPhone 6s (not suggesting it, but IMHO it's a fantastic device and you asked for our favorites) and OnePlus 3 are my two top phones. I have an S7 currently and it's fine but I don't see it warranting the steep price tag. I've been quite curious about the Note 5, it looks great, but have no personal experience with it. I also have historically loved the Nexus line of phones, but have no experience with the newest models though from everything I hear they're great.

I would suggest any Bethesda game. Fallout 3/4 and New Vegas are great as well as Skyrim. The Witcher series is also quite good. I know you said you didn't really like indie games but The Binding of Isaac Rebirth is amazing.
Edit: The Just Cause games and Saints Row games are also really good!
