    kennethnakasone reacted to LAwLz in Microsoft wants to break your network: ADV190023 LDAPS Changes
    At home, your computer has locally stored usernames and passwords. In most enterprise networks, there is a centralized server which keeps track of your username and password.

    For example at work I can login to my colleagues computer using my account even though his computer had no idea I was a legitimate user. When I try to login on his computer, that computer will send a message to the Active Directory (AD) server going "hey, this user with this password wants to login to this computer, is that allowed?". That communication is done with a protocol called LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol).

    Having a centralized database of users where you can manage their user privileges is extremely handy at companies. And it's not just computer logins that does this either. For example all our managed network switches, routers, firewalls, etc also use LDAP against a Windows Active Directory to verify logins. When I want to login to our firewall, I just type in my Windows account, the firewall talks to the AD and checks if I am allowed to login. It means I have one account (username and password) for a ton of different devices, and as soon as I change password the new one is the current one for all those devices.
    Ever logged into a wireless network where you have to type in both your username and password to gain access, rather than like at home with WPA2 where everyone who has the password can login? When you type in the username and password, the wireless controller checks if you're allowed to access the wireless network using LDAP against some directory service (probably Windows Active Directory).

    Basically, LDAP is the underlying protocol used to manage a database of user accounts and privileges.

    What these news are about is that Microsoft went "oh shit, our default settings in Windows Active Directory are kind of insecure. Let's change them!". When they change these settings, it might create mismatches between LDAP clients (like my job's routers and switches) and the settings on our Active Directory server. What this can result in is that when I try to login to my switch it might go "hey Windows AD, is LAwLz allowed to login to me with this password?" and the AD server replies "sorry but I refuse to talk to you now because it might not be safe".

    If devices are not prepared for this change, login might stop working.

    kennethnakasone reacted to BrinkGG in ISP Charging Fee for Customer-Owned Equipment
    I'm not gonna lie, this isn't as bad as it seems. BUT it is extremely situational.
    We have two options at my current house; Spectrum and Frontier. And while Spectrum does not charge for rental equipment that I'm not using (I have my own modem, router, firewall and access points), Frontier does.
    BUT, Spectrum will not allow us to have an internet speed above 50/10 unless we also bundle it with cable and phone. So that ends up being about $125/mo with 100/10, analog phone, and the base cable package.
    \ ? /
    Frontier however, offers 200/200 for $60/mo by itself. Sure the rental fee is $10/mo on top of that, but that is still a MUCH better deal in my eyes then Spectrum's offer. Even adding a home phone line is only another extra $10/mo, and adding cable is $45/mo, but in total, that's still the same cost as spectrum's much slower service. Plus I never actually use cable or the home phone, so Frontier is a much more enticing offer to me.

    Also, his argument that Verizon "forced" Frontier on him is bit ridiculous. the US Gov't forced Verizon to sell a segment of their market in fear that Verizon would become a monopoly. So they sold the California market to Frontier and handed over all of the equipment, trucks, staff, and customers with it.

    EDIT: I also forgot to mention, Frontier is completely transparent with the fees as well. If this customer actually asked about the rental fee, they would have told him it is not removable. I called about 1.5-2 months ago and asked, and they confirmed this for me.

    If you're only looking to backup the data and not require accessing it from anywhere then I'd just buy a 4TB drive, plug it in a computer and setup some software like FreeFileSync to periodically replicate data from the NAS to the backup drive. This is assuming one of your motives isn't off-site backup. If you desire that then some form of cloud solution may suit you. I can't give recommendations though. Not my field.

    kennethnakasone got a reaction from someguyonearth in i need to ask about exp gdc beast compatibility with my asus ROG gl552jx
    I believe the model number is actually longer, like GL552JX-XXXXXX. More people would probably be able to help if you provided this information.

    A cursory google search yielded this thread: https://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?82031-Gl552jx-m-2-ssd-upgrade-questions where a user verifies that --at least on the GL552JX-DM292D model-- the M.2 slot is SATA only.

    Thankfully, the EXP GDC Beast is offered in multiple configurations, such as Expresscard, mPCIe, and M.2. I imagine the mPCIe version would work with your laptop (if the M.2 version doesn't work out for you).

    As for my personal experience: I haven't used the GDC Beast, but I have used the mPCIe solution described here: https://egpu.io/forums/expresscard-mpcie-m-2-adapters/us7-50-generic-mpcie-egpu-adapter/ , which works well for adding a GPU (my Quadro K2000) to my Dell Latitude E5530.

    The responsiveness of the Apple Pencil is really tempting though. I've used low end/mid range Wacom tablets, have a Yiynova MSP19U, and borrow a Surface Book with Pen from my school often, but none of them feel like the keep up with the stylus like the Pencil does. That, combined with the $400 price tag, is just way too tempting for someone like me. orz

    Last time I was in Japan, I didn't find PC parts to be cheaper than buying from etail stores in the US. That being said, your location is listed as the Phillipines, so if near-US prices are cheaper than what you can get locally, I'd say go for it.

    Regarding what you said about miners: I'd imagine there are a lot in Japan, considering you can go to brick-and-mortar crypotcurrency exchanges in Tokyo. Not sure how much this affects pricing though; I haven't shopped for PC parts in Japan recently.

    It might be interesting to look at pawn shops/ thrift shops. Some stores I can think of off the top of my head are Hard-Off, Mandaishoten, etc. For example, I was able to buy a used arcade stick for ~3000 yen. There was a decent amount of PC parts as well, but I didn't take a look at prices.

    As MimigaKing has mentioned, Akihabara has many electronics stores around the station. I usually buy hobby electronics parts there though (as opposed to PC parts).

    Personally, I'd invest some of that into bitcoin or something, but between the two options you've narrowed down to, I would choose the latter.

    I assume there's a PS4 exclusive that you want, or perhaps have a friend group that's primarily on PS4, which would justify the cost in my mind. Also, I would avoid upgrading right now, seeing as there's still a NAND shortage, and GPUs prices have only recently started to return to normal. Of course, we're also getting close to Black Friday, so SSD/GPU prices might be reasonable by then.

    Just as a heads-up/progress report: Making my own class was a bit daunting, so I opted for doing the program like this:
    So, I made all of the buttons, put them (or rather, their references(?)) into an array, then used their position in the array to call the .read() and .isPressed() methods. Though I couldn't figure out a way to abbreviate the creation of button objects, the loop itself looks cleaner than before, so I'm happy with it for the time being.

    I would like try making a class though. Ideally, the object itself would take the number of buttons as a parameter, and then allow the button to be pressed by using a method that takes the button's number as a parameter.
    For example, for a class called Macropad:
    // Object Creation
    Macropad sampleMacropad( numberOfButtons, debounceTime, etc.);

    Then, in the main function:
    for (int buttonNumber = 0; buttonNumber < numberOfButtons; ++buttonNumber)
    {
        sampleMacropad.pressButton(buttonNumber);
    }

    That way, I could simplify both the object creation, and button check/press code.

    I can't give you examples, as my coding for arduino-like chips etc is still rather novice. But I've made a quick search to see if its possible.
    Basicly Classes would be a great option for you. You write one piece of code, where u can input and specify a button and for example a function to the button by calling instances of those classes.
    If I'm not mistaken arduino uses C or C++ for their programming (or a dialect of some sorts)
    So I'm going to give you a small PHP (yea go figure) example that would look somewhat similar. (as PHP language is based on C++ if I'm not mistaken)

    <?php class button{ var $button; var $action; public function __construct($button, $action){ $this->button = $button; $this->action = $action; } private function buttonAssignment(){ /* insert code to assign the button to appropiate GPIO pin or something forexample if u would make the variable $button = 1, that might be corrosponding to GPIO pin 1 or whatever */ } private function actionAssignment(){ /* Somewhat same here as the buttonAssignment Define certain functionality it needs to do according to $action. Lets say $action = "poweroff", then write a code that whenever $action = "poweroff" to poweroff the machine */ } } /* then call the Class by making a new instance */ $button1 = new button(1, "poweroff"); ?> Again this is a PHP example, you still need to make it listen to the actual button press. But just to give you an idea what Classes could do for you. Also I am sort off aware that my PHP code there probably won't work at all even in PHP  Didn't check for any mistakes or what so ever.
