  1. This is a pretty good list as well. I might do some mixing and matching between the two parts lists. I'll probably go with the M.2 drive, and the 650W PSU. The 980 uses 165W, so I would be able to put a high end card in with little issue. What's the rule of thumb for picking a PSU wattage? Edit: Of course, I would go with the less expensive PSU at the time. It looks like the 750W PSU costs less right now.
  2. That is exactly what I would have done.
  3. Yea, I don't need the capacity for a boot drive. This still looks really good! I might go with a larger hard drive, but now I know what category I should be looking at. Is there a reason for that case? I like it, but am just curious what the rationale is.
  4. Ok, I don't think it's worth it then to go for it. Right now I've got 7 minute boot times, so I'm happy with anything faster than a rock. Also, will that PSU be good considering that it has so much headroom? I'm guessing you chose it because it can expand easily to accommodate a GPU. PSUs are so cheap anyways, I feel it's good to go with a nice one. It's too bad those Broadwell C chips aren't out yet. I would have loved to go with one.
  5. Wow, this is great! I don't have any space constraints, so whatever parts have the functionality that I need work for me. If smaller parts means less cost, than that's great! Is there any technology faster than SATA available to the public? I was looking at M.2 drives a while back to see if I could get any speed gains that way.
  6. Great catch, I've put my new idea above, it can be seen here: https://pcpartpicker.com/part/asrock-motherboard-z97extreme6ac Also, $750 and the US.
  7. Hello, I am building a PC, but it's different than the gaming rigs that we see a lot of here. I'm a programmer, and I have only a slight interest in games, so I'm planning on using integrated graphics to start. My main concern with games is that they're playable, regardless of the graphic quality. What I am looking for is a machine that performs very well with many different applications running at the same time, is very reliable, and is upgradable down the road. Here's what I have so far: CPU: 4790K ASRock Z97E-ITX/ac Mini ITX LGA1150 Motherboard I know I want 2x8Gb of ram, so I can add two more 8Gb sticks in later if I need it. I also want a bare minimum of 1TB for storage, and the fastest SSD available to use as a boot drive. I am not going to install a graphics card because the integrated graphics are good enough for what I need, and I can add a really nice card in later if I choose. What I'm asking for are recommendations on what to get for the RAM, Hard Drive, and SSD. There's a lot of options out there, and you guys have much better knowledge than I do. Just know that I don't have infinite amounts of cash, but I'll pay extra for a large performance boost. What's the difference between the 4790 and the 4790K? I'm not planning to over clock, but the 4790K has a 10% faster clock speed, which is quite significant. Also, should I opt for the X99 platform? It seems like performance gains would be negligible, and the parts are more expensive. Would it be worth it to go that route in order to have a modern computer for longer, plus the extra CPU cores? Thanks for your input! Edit: My budget is $750, but I'll go up to $1,000 if it's worth it. I live in the US. Also, it looks like my motherboard doesn't even match my spec. good catch @givingtnt. I think this one works better: Z97 Extreme6
  8. Right now, my powersupply is so bad, that my computer won't even turn on if too many USB devices are taking power. The 5v rail standby rail gets so much power sucked from the UBS devices, that there's not enough juice to start the computer. Also, high output efficent power supplies are kinda cool :3
  9. Haha, yeah, That, and my non QWERTY layout will make my keyboard unusable Wow, that one has everything I want. I'm between the quickfire rapid, and the Das Keyboard now. I can go LED tenkeyless, or aluminum with the fancy design. It's a hard choice.
  10. Ooohhhhhhh. Right. I knew that I have to say, it's got a reputation. If I decide to go with a full layout, I'll be sure to consider it, or the RGB version. Right now I'm between that, the Das keyboard, and the WASD/CODE.
  11. It's just weird having certain keys be different than others. To someone typing, the number keys and W are rarely used, so it's weird to have something designed for gaming on them. I do like your point about the quality of the keys without the grips though.
  12. I was talking about the texturing on the key caps. Of course any mechanical switch is going to feel better than a membrane one. Even typing on blacks would still be better than membrane. This is pretty convincing. It really is too bad they don't make a ten keyless, maybe it's not as big of a deal as I think it would be. Have you tried some of the other keyboards mentioned in this thread before?
  13. The K70 looks nice, but it's got some stuff on the gaming keys that don't work as well for typing. That's a good point. I know how to touch type already, so if I never see the keyboard, LEDs aren't necessary. The keys could be blank for all I care. The quickfire series seems pretty solid. I've seen the Rapid recommended in several places, so it's a shame it only seems to come in blacks. Are there many keyboards out there with an aluminum front? I've only seen two, the Das Keyboard, and the Cooler Master Mech.
  14. I'm posting here, because there are so many options, and you guys know wayy more than me. I plan on buying a good quality keyboard that will last me a long time. I may be using this keyboard in a professional environment. My budget is $150, but I don't mind going up to $200 if I need to for quality. I've done some research on my own and have decided on a few things. If you think I've decided on something horrible, and that I should change my mind, please let me know. The following items are ranked in order of importance to me. I would like mx brown or clear switches. I do mostly programming, with some gaming at times, so I would prefer something that works well for typing. I like them because they're quieter and have the tactile feedback. I would like something with a very good build quality. I've seen the Das Keyboards, and I really like the aluminum finish. A lot. It's very clean and professional, not to mention that it's durable too. I would also like a ten keyless keyboard. My desk now is cramped, but in the long term I won't be using the numpad that much, so I'd rather have the desk space. I would like an LED keyboard, but it's not necessary. I'm not using this for a flashy gaming build, so dim lights that don't have to blind you are necessary. RGBs are probably not needed. Media keys are desired. I stream much of my music, so I use the volume control on my keyboard now a lot, but it's nice to be able to pause songs and such. I could always use some sort of script or modification in the OS to get media keys if I really needed them. The keys should all be the same color. I think some gaming keyboards come with the WASD keys in red or something, but I prefer a solid color look. I could always buy a few more keycaps later though to match the color. I use an alternative layout, so custom keycaps are a bonus. This isn't necessary though, I have the layout memorized and can touch type, so I don't need them, but it's nice. I could always buy keycaps later if I wanted. I would prefer the ANSI layout, coming from the US. ISO would be acceptable if it were the only thing available. ISO only is not a deal-breaker. I've looked at the CODE, and WASDv2 keyboards. What's the difference? All I can see is that the WASD has custom keycaps, but the CODE has LEDs. Also the removable USB cable on both models is a nice feature, but I don't think it would matter to me. The Das Keyboards look really nice, but it doesn't come in ten keyless. It's also got the huge volume knob, which I think I would enjoy, although it looks funky to me now. If you're wondering, this is what I'm on now. it's just a comes-with-the-computer keyboard. There isn't even a product page for it. So, what do you guys recommend? Thanks so much for any help!
  15. Pick me!I I love taking HDR photos now. This helped me search for a mechanical keyboard.
