TheMcSame reacted to jimm_eh in How to tell if rechargeable batteries are kaput?
Are you talking about rechargeable AA or AAA type cells (NiMH, nickel metal hydride)?

There's a possibility that the controller is (badly) designed to consider the batteries dead at 1.2V.  That's relatively pooped out for alkalines (though not completely), but is just getting started for NiMH cells (and NiCad, nickel cadmiums, as well).

If so, your cells are fine, but won't run the controller well.

Try running a set of fresh alkalines to make sure the controller works, then use a meter like in TetraSky's video to check the voltage on them once the controller quits.  If they voltage of each cell is around 1.2V or more when "empty", the controller won't like rechargeables.

Idk... I get where you're coming from, but I wouldn't say it's the opposite. Instead big and flashy is moving from the tower to the rest of the setup. As you said, bigger monitors, more monitors, RGB peripherals. But there seems to have been a bit of a move to smaller form factor cases (I could be talking complete BS, I've not exactly been keeping in the loop).

So I wouldn't say it's dying, just that the flashiness is moving.

TheMcSame reacted to TetraSky in Microsoft makes things worse: Windows 11 upgrade video blasted as being "tone deaf"
Windows 10 is supported until 2025. What are they complaining about. No one is forcing anyone to upgrading on day one.
Machines older than 4 years today not being compatible with Windows 11 shouldn't be an issue, as  incompatible PC will be at the bare minimum, in 2025, at least 9 years old. We have people with 10 year old machines today complaining about this. Their computers will be 15 years old. It's time for an upgrade at that point. Sorry not sorry.
I get people wanting to keep using their old computers because buying new ones is expensive, especially if they don't really use them for anything more than web browsing. But at one point or another, old and antiquated machines are no longer worth being supported. Be it from a security standpoint, to a compatibility one (and monetary, obviously).
Also, as a side note, I wouldn't be surprised if the same people complaining about this, are upgrading their phones every two years or whenever their current phone is fully paid off, then they hop onto the next one with their carrier.

It's insane to assume Microsoft should just keep offering support for these old computers when even manufacturers of these parts and machines are likely not going to be supporting them anymore with drivers. Like Nvidia dropping support for GPUs older than 2013 recently, which they will likely extend to the 900 series next year and the 1000 series in like 3 years.
I'm ok with Microsoft not supporting older hardware just for the sake of this stupid TPM thing. Just wish they'd trim down the OS from a lot of legacy stuff that's bloating it up too, or at least make it an optional download.

And there's always Linux for people who fear the scary message that says their computer is "unsafe" in 2025 because Win10 is EOL.

Pretty sure they ARE dropping 32bit support though.
    https://www.xda-developers.com/windows-11/

Even if the current beta has 32bit ISOs for testing (not sure, didn't check), the final release is set to not have 32bit support according to all info available.

I'm just waiting for the day current gen BEVs are the new diesels...

First we were told PETROL BAD DIESEL GOOD, EVERYONE BUY A DIESEL NOW
Then we found out diesels weren't actually better
Then we found diesels were actually a lot worse (VW scandal)

Mark my words... It might not be for another decade or two, but there will come a point we're told these BEVs aren't the climate saviours we touted them as and we'll then be told to buy whatever new alternative is knocking about then like... Let's say BEVs that use man-made lithium for the li-ion batteries or something or some other material that's less destructive to obtain. After all, lithium is a rare Earth metal, though only rare by name (about as common as lead IIRC), so usually only found in smaller deposits.
Probably the same reason some people are still afraid of planes and helicopters.

Think, nuclear power plants and planes/helicopters are quite similar in some ways. They're incredibly safe as long as they're operated properly and not pushed into conditions they're not built for. Often times, failures are the result of human error or suddenly, uncontrollable events. Now, if you have an equipment failure with a dash of human error on top? You have a major issue.

The problem stems from those rare incidents where a serious problem occurs and is met with human error/poorly trained staff. When it comes to nuclear power plants and aircraft, scenarios like these often end up with very catastrophic failures, so when these do happen, the numbers can look very scary and it'll get a lot of news coverage purely because it's rare. Look at it like this, about 5 people die every day on UK roads. No one bats an eye. If a plane goes down killing 100 people, it's all over the news, it's a massive tragedy. Another 20 days goes by... Another 100 deaths on UK roads and another plane goes down, killing 100. The former? Nothing. The latter? 24 hour news coverage.

That's what it's about. It's all about association. It's all about those one off rare events. Those events that happen rarely but are catastrophic. That's why people are afraid.

When the dates keep moving further away for opening stuff up, that's the definition of indefinite. At the beginning it was 5 weeks, then two months; I'm into month 3 now. You expect everyone is going to wait until there's a solid treatment or a vaccine? Like, wait a year or more? What's a responsible amount of time? Millions are not yet getting their unemployment because the systems are being over-extended, and the $1200 those people may have gotten as stimulus won't be keeping them fed and a roof over their heads for long. What do you expect them to do? If your life is cushy enough you can sit back at your desk for a year and armchair quarterback everyone else's needs, go for it; Millions of people are not that lucky.

My old headphones recently started to tear my ears up, and despite my usual efforts, nothing seemed to solve the problem. They were on-ear headphones (marshall monitors), but honestly, quite comfortable at first. But in the last month or so, they started tearing away at my ears, no amount of adjustments were doing anything and some new pads didn't help either so I just decided to get some AKG K92's to tide me over to a planned upgrade (probably some Beyer DT1770s)

Pretty decent headphones for the price in all honesty, though sound wise, it almost feels as if something is missing sometimes, and I just can't put my finger on what it is.

Because people would rather have a dedicated jack than a dongle that stops you from charging your phone while being used or having to use wireless headphones, which are yet another thing to charge? Plenty of headphones are still being manufactured with a 3.5mm jack, it might be outdated, but it's not exactly an obsolete connector and yet phone manufacturers have decided to remove them for no real reason.

It ain't hard to understand why people still complain about it.

Tbf, just because you don't like one it doesn't mean you don't like the other. In this case it does, but personally I'm fine with notches. Hole punches though? Get that damn bs outta here.

I mean... I'm not even sure how you'd review a mouse. It's a mouse. Idk... It's comfortable to use and the buttons have a nice feel? The only real gripe I have is that I feel like there's too much resistance to the scroll wheel when it's not spinning freely. Obviously, when it's spinning freely it's far too loose for regular use, but it's not really intended for regular use anyway.

TheMcSame got a reaction from Synedisis in What to do when RMA is lost during shipping
Had an experience with an RMAed phone getting lost a few months back, the retailer looked into the issue and sent out a replacement for me without fuss.

Generally the manufacturer or seller tends to foot the bill for shipping, at least in my experience. If they provide shipping, insurance is also down to them. Likewise, should something go missing, it is their issue as the contract for delivery of the goods is between them and the courier service.

If you're footing the bill for shipping, the same applies. If the item is lost, it is your problem. For expensive goods, I'd 100% get the full works. Insurance, tracking and signed delivery. For very expensive items, a tracker might not be a bad idea.

TheMcSame got a reaction from Origami Cactus in Inevitable nationwide ban on vaping
The current state regarding vapes is that, when buying legitimate products, it's far safer than smoking.

In regards to cancer, as of this point, there's little evidence showing that vaping using legitimate, off the shelf products is harmful. You'll find the vast majority of harm caused by vaping is down to unregulated mods (usually lack safety features that prevent shorting and over discharging of batteries which leads to catastrophic failure), bootleg liquids (bootleg THC pods being the most recent occurrence) and poor battery care (I.E people keeping bare batteries in their pockets with other metal objects like keys, causing the batteries to short again, causing a catastrophic failure)

There have been cases of some off the shelf liquids causing a condition known as popcorn lung, this was down to the use of diacetyl in some liquids. These days, manufacturers do not use diacetyl.

As far as cancer risk goes though, it simply hasn't been long enough to tell. Vaping has been around for a while but not truly long enough to fully understand what, if any long term effects it has on your health. Current research claims that vaping is about 95% safer and nicotine itself is known to be a relatively harmless substance, no more harmful than caffeine.
