If you have a small room check out 200 dollar M AUDIO BX5 D2,it produces a stunning accurate sound,which is amazing for both movies and music.It lacks a bit of bass punch,so subwoofer or bx8 version is good.Because it is internally amplified you don't need a 500 dollar DAC.Only consider this studio monitor for desktop use.

There is a huge difference between between a sound card and a DAC,i have an Asus xonar U7 which is good for the price and a fiio e11 headphone amplifier both are similarly priced.I find that the ASUS U7 while good for movies with ath m40x(accurate sounding version of ath m50) lacks the punchy bass of fiio e11.After listening to E11 i stopped listening to music with the soundcard.Although the soundcard produces clean output for my M AUDIO BX5 D2 studio monitors probably because it is internally amplified.Buy a DAC if you want punchier,fun,musical,clear sound.If you just want clean sound with zero distortion but with less fun,detailed sound compared to dedicated DAC go for soundcard.Audioquest Dragonfly headphone dac is the best you can buy for the price,Audio engine D1 is a good option for both stereo and headphone.
