  1. In my opinion, the Intel stock cooler gets monstrously loud once it gets gunked up with dust, which it does easily. In my experience, it takes about 3-4 months before dust buildup begins to cause the fan's noise (as well as temps) to rise noticeably. After I swapped out the stock cooler with the 212 Evo, I never had to worry about dust-related noise again, and dust is much, much easier to clean off with the Evo than the Intel stock cooler.
  2. Off the top of my head, it's conductive and corrosive to certain materials. Copper? Nickel? Not sure which one. You have to be careful of what is coming in contact with it.
  3. Who or what is a Casey Neistat, reminds me of a chocolate milk drink from my childhood days. And the heck is a beme, I'm guessing it's supposed to sound like "beam", couldn't imagine it being "beh-may". Feck I'm getting old.
  4. Oh god, I wouldn't use that case even if it was free.
  5. I overclock my GPU because I want to know how far it can be pushed compared to other people's. A graphics card purchase is like an extremely expensive lottery ticket, you buy it with the hope that you bought a winner (the "silicon lottery"). Did you get a lucky GTX 1080 that overclocks to 2.2 GHz on air with stock voltage? Congratulations, you're now better than those lowly commoners with 1080s that barely overclock past 2 GHz. (obligatory /s)
  6. My 1080 does at least 100 FPS on 1440p near-maxed (minus the obvious extras like MSAA, GameWorks, etc) on everything I can throw on it. I see that the LG 29UC88 has a 75 Hz max refresh rate so a 1080 seems like overkill by a fair amount. The best no-compromise option would be the 1070 in my opinion.
  7. I suggest using a monitoring tool such as HWInfo to monitor to get an idea of how much of your 8GB RAM you actually use. If your usage easily approaches its limits, or gets higher than you're comfortable with, then you can feel confident about going ahead and upgrading. This way, you get an impartial opinion of whether or not you really need to upgrade.
  8. I use a Define R4 windowless case and it is incredible for silence. When I first turned on my system after putting it together, I could not hear anything at all coming from inside the case which made for a panicky moment until I realized I had some output on my screen. After installing 2 additional fans, one of them requiring a top panel to be removed from the case, noise levels at load are noticeably higher, but perfectly acceptable when headphones are on. Noise at idle is a soft, unobtrusive hum even with the removal of one top panel.
  9. Be aware that frame skips are more likely to happen near the limit of your monitor's overclock, ie: if 75 Hz works but 76 Hz fails to produce output, 75 Hz may actually be frameskipping. That said, my Asus MX259H (1080p, IPS) overclocks to 72 Hz over HDMI with minimal frame skip. Edit: To test for frameskipping, use http://www.testufo.com/#test=frameskipping.
  10. It looks like the graphics card is on its last legs and is close to death. My old, old GTS 8800 showed very similar symptoms for a few hours/days before it finally ended itself.
  11. I'm glad I didn't preorder this, 66 FPS average on 1440p with a GTX 1080 doesn't look right to me. From early user reviews, people say that the game doesn't look much better than the original Dishonored, so the low FPS across the board isn't solely due to improved graphics.
  12. Hillary 197 vs. Trump 201 right now. That's one heck of a catch-up.
  13. I had no idea how pervasive the SJW movement as been lately. Makes me realize in hindsight how I lucky I was to not trigger complete chaos in one of my English classes just a few years ago when I dared suggest how feminism isn't as necessary in modern times as it was compared to "way back then".
  14. I'm Canadian, but I would vote for Trump purely because the end result would be funny. Endless news headlines of Trump doing or saying something hilarious each week would make for excellent small talk during breaks at work. I can't imagine the same if Hillary were to win. Email scandals just aren't very good for laughs. Interestingly, my group of coworkers are overwhelmingly Hillary supporters. We're all university-educated ("college" for you USians) with at least a Bachelors.
  15. From those choices, I would choose the 970 based on price, age, VRAM, and performance. If the 1060 was a 6GB version I would choose that instead, but I'm very uncomfortable about settling for 3 GB in 2016. If you can find a 390 for cheaper than the 970 I'd say go for it, they come in 4GB and 8GB variants if I recall correctly, the 390 is frequently suggested over the 970 for price-to-performance reasons on LTT. I wouldn't go any lower than a 970/1060/390 for 1080P/60FPS gaming if you plan on using the GPU for the next 2-3 years. But that's just my opinion, you may be able to stretch it out longer depending on what games you play.
  16. I'd either save my money for a more recent card or hold onto it for future use. I just don't think a 780 is worth the money considering how old it is and how 3GB of VRAM is scraping the ground in terms of how useful it is for games today and the near future.
  17. Hell to the no, that card is now 2 generations old, soon to be 3 if Nvidia decides to release Pascal's successor in 2017. I don't see the point in upgrading from one old card to another old card, especially for $220 CAD. Either use that money for something else that's useful or save it for something similar in the GTX 10XX lineup or AMD equivalent.
  18. I know as well as anyone that absolute privacy on the Internet is impossible. But I'm not just going to sit idly by when an obvious solution for "some" privacy, however small, is readily available.
  19. Bonus tip: Type "telemetry" instead of "nvidia" to search for all telemetry-related entries, not just from Nvidia. I found 2 others from Microsoft Office.
  20. Holy shit, those "before" prices are horrifying. Doubly so when I realized I was thinking in CAD and the actual Canadian prices would be much higher. I don't buy cables often so I don't know if those are the typical prices for cables, but it doesn't look right at all.
  21. If I haven't been gaming or putting load on the GPU, my 1080 sits at around 35-40C. After a gaming session, the idle temps typically hang around 45-50C. My custom fan curve goes something like this: Fans off below 45C Fans at 10% between 45 and 55C After 55C, +3% fan per 1C (approximately - it starts off aggressive then eases off).
  22. Removed WOT just now upon reading this article. I've been using WOT for many, many years and it's always been one of my core addons in Firefox, and it sickens me that an addon called "Web of Trust" has outright betrayed everyone's trust by selling them out.
  23. I don't see anything offensive with this ad, it's just a bit of tongue-in-cheek humor with a clever double meaning (how clever is debatable).
  24. So the only reason I'm not seeing ads on Windows 10 Pro is because I have deferred updates enabled? I haven't used Edge ever since I first installed W10 besides to download Firefox. If it's the deferred updates, I fear the day my time runs out and I have nag ads all over the place.
