  1. I think the logo looks cool. Plus free stuff. So why not.
  2. Hi all. So I have a 32gb usb which I want to use as a freenas os drive, but it is formated as a 385mb nfts partition, and the rest of the drive is unallocated. I went into disk manager to try and make a new partition with the entire drive, but those options are unavailable, and when I reformat the disk, it only affects the partition, and leaves the unallocated part of the drive alone. Screenshot of disk imager. Left the relevant information unmarked. http://imgur.com/NNOhyD2 Any advice on erasing the existing partition would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
  3. Good point. I'll see if I can pick up something on craigslist or ebay. Thanks
  4. Hi all, long time no see. So I'm building a FreeNas out of an existing computer which I put a new wd red drive into. It has 8 gb of ram, and currently has an i7 3770, which I will be taking out of the nas for my new desktop build for later. What I need is a replacement z77 cpu for the 3770. It needs to be able to handle system backups and redundancy in the server. I'd prefer to spend as little as possible. Thanks Klark
  5. I think they announced something like the kraken where you can attach a corsair cpu block to a gpu with a bracket. Not sure if it's out yet.
  6. I have an asus transformer book which has been pretty good for light use. It only has 64gb but it is solid state so it will load word quickly. It also has the benefit of being a franken tablet so if he wanted to say, do rosetta stone in bed (I dunno) then that option is there. Cons: Small. Actually a pro in terms of portability, con because the keyboard dock is small. The trackpad isn't great also, but I am comparing to an apple glass trackpad, so perhaps my standards are high. Atom processor: Doesnt have great per core performance, but it is a quadcore. Should be enough for office and rosetta stone. Its also pretty cheap. I believe both the 10" and 12" versions are below $500
  7. Good to know. I'll look into how to prove studenthood. Noted. Thanks!
  8. It looks like a great build, but with windows it'd be at almost $800. My bad for not listing that I needed an OS.
  9. Sorry. About $700 including OS. Almost primarily for gaming, maybe some game recording. I guess $70 since it fits in with the rest of the build, however, any m-atx with usb 3.0, and out of box compatibility with the cpu. That's a pretty good list, but as I forgot to mention, the budget is $700 with OS. I do like some of those choices though. Are there 40-50 dollar motherboards which will have the full compatibility with the cpu? Everyone I've tried has needed the update. I decided on the 760/770 because I have seen them go for $150-$160 recently, however I hadn't thought to look at 280x's. Indeed you are correct that there are many available for that price. Thanks
  10. Hey all, I am planning another friend's build (hopefully it will go through this time as opposed to remaining a plan...) Here is the parts list: PCPartPicker part list: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/4PNDFT Price breakdown by merchant: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/4PNDFT/by_merchant/ CPU: AMD Athlon X4 860K 3.7GHz Quad-Core OEM/Tray Processor ($79.99 @ Mwave) CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus 76.8 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($25.99 @ SuperBiiz) Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-F2A88XM-D3H Micro ATX FM2+ Motherboard ($72.98 @ Newegg) Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($64.98 @ Newegg) Storage: A-Data Premier Pro SP600 128GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($49.99 @ Newegg) Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($48.99 @ NCIX US) Case: NZXT S340 (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case ($66.50 @ Directron) Power Supply: Corsair Builder 430W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply ($39.99 @ Amazon) Operating System: Microsoft Windows 8.1 - 64-bit (OEM) (64-bit) ($92.00 @ B&H) Wireless Network Adapter: TP-Link TL-WN881ND 802.11b/g/n PCI-Express x1 Wi-Fi Adapter ($18.83 @ Mwave) Other: Gtx 760 or 770 ($160.00) Total: $708.24 Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available Generated by PCPartPicker 2015-03-29 17:10 EDT-0400 Two things to consider: I am looking for a motherboard that won't require a bios update for use with the kaveri cpu. If you know of any that have decent aesthetics, let me know. I am going to buy a gtx 770 or 760 on ebay, that is why there is no listed graphics card. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Klark
  11. If I gave it 4 cores and 15-16gb of ram? Also will the lack of hardware acceleration affect video playback? Or would it just be moving and reorganizing windows and programs?
  12. So in terms of a percentage can you give me a ball park estimate of how much total system performance i can expect with vm?
  13. I was refering to the virtual machine. If possible I'd like it so that I could set all 4 cores and most if not all the ram to osx when the virtual machine is booted, and then have windows regain full priority after the virtual machine is turned off. I would love too, however the main reason I am going with Z77 as opposed to Z97 or X99 is because I already have the i7 3770 from a scrapped computer, and it's a pretty good cpu, so I want to use it.
