That's not a STRIX 970 as the STRIX 970 has only a single 8pin power connect not an 8pin + 6pin as depicted.

This is wrong 290x often gets outperformed buy the GTX 970. Plus add to the fact that the GTX 970 OC better and run cooler the choice is clear GTX 970 FTW ! Stock for Stock and OC for OC the 290x is faster in only 3 out of 17 games tested ! http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/EVGA/GTX_970_SC_ACX_Cooler/6.html

Don't see how this thread has go this much attention other than the fact that the fanboy biased is stronger clearly on one side than the other. Freesync has not even been officially reviewed yet so lets reserve judgement until that time.

Both are good but I will recommend New Vegas.

It just feels like there is more to it (bigger,/larger, more quests etc), the music is better, the story and quests feeling more fulfilling. The mods available for it are amazing as well. Seriously. Play NV first, and then Fallout 3.

Sapphire is perhaps the best brand for AMD cards ... the 290X Vapor X was amazing.

They all dump a lot of heat; the heat coming off the GPU has to go somewhere, as there is no way to create cold. But yeah, cards like the Tri-X R9 290/290x are both cool and quiet. They're quieter under load than many 970s.

The aftermarket 290s are not loud at all. The Vapor X is more quite than the 780ti and most any other high end card.

That 970 is going back. Coil whine + that memory issue + getting a new ASUS R9 290X for 330 Euros are enought arguments. Or are they?

What do you guys think? Another option would be a new Asus 980 for 560 Euros, but I am running a 1080p display.

Edit: a used 780 is also a option.

See the pattern here. The nvidia fans claim Vram Gate is a lie when it's a proven issue.

I/O reacted to Sauron in Okay, I'm out of the loop. What's the shitstorm about GTX 970s?
    1) Sure, the reference design is crap and everyone knows it. Nobody advises to get it either. So what's your point?
I can believe nvidia lied. If they weren't lying, why didn't they issue a public statement correcting the reviewers at any point in the 6 months the card has been on the market?

    2) Efficiency is nice, but the price premium is really huge. Bare in mind power savings amount to only a few bucks per year. The time necessary to fill the gap would be way longer than the time you'd take to upgrade. In general the 900 series' performance is underwhelming considering it competes with 2 year old architectures. therefore I usually advise to either spare your money with a more value card or to just wait and see what gets released in the next few months (not just from amd, nvidia is likely to pull a 780ti again). And it has not ALWAYS been the case my friend. It has in the last couple of years, barely, and even then nvidia released kepler AFTER gcn was released. Before kepler it was the reverse.

There are two big complaints about the gtx 970:

    1)---NVIDIA straight up lied.

Nvidia lied about the specs of the gtx 970. They said it had more ROPs than it actually has. They also "omitted" to say that 0.5 out of those 4gb were partitioned separately and you'd get stuttering when accessing them. That doesn't change benchmark results, but at high resolutions you may get noticeable stuttering even if it's not reflected in the framerate. Definitely not a huge issue, but people don't like to support lies with their money.

    2)---The price.

Currently you can get an R9 290x for 100$ less than a 970. Theoretically thanks to the new architecture and cheap memory interface nvidia should be able to pay less for their gpus and therefore sell them at a very competitive price. However AMD sells their stuff for 100$ lower, which means that either AMD is selling at a loss, or nvidia is claiming exaggerate margins. It also means that the price/performance value of the 970 sank into the ground a few months after release. It was the obvious choice when it was priced like an R9 290, now the gap is too high for the higher efficiency to justify.

Will these two things affect your experience? Probably not. But you could get significantly better value out of amd for much less, if you care to spare some money to buy some other nice upgrade.

Well that fine but you must know that this will be taken by nvidia as reinforcement that they can lie to you again in the future. I rather just vote with my dollar now and help correct nvidia to become the best they can be.

It tanks above 3.2GB of usage. It's terrible. Swaps are almost faster. It would almost work better as a 3 gig card or something. When I'm testing stuff, I limit the engine from using more than 3GB on this card just to avoid this crap.
I have not ran into a problem with normal gaming really, not even at 1600p.
It won't stop me from buying another NVIDIA product. Hell AMDs record holding shittiest drivers known to man don't stop me from buying their cards either if they are good cards.
