    Hey guys!

First time posting, long time lover of everything LMG. And I wanted to demonstrate what I've learned from LMG in this video. Including nearly breaking stuff!

Today is the day! I have finally put the finishing touches on my first ever PC build from the ground up. All new parts (except one) and boy... has it been stressful! I could list everything that went wrong... so I will!

    1. The motherboard BIOS update to try and get the most out of my RAM bricked an m.2 sata drive and a 3TB HDD.
    2. I ripped the CPU out of the motherboard when trying to replace the stock heatsink with an AIO.
    3. The machine wouldn't boot after the above, it came down to a RAM stick being slightly loose.
    4. Drivers for my webcam wouldn't work, but I just upgraded it and now its gucci.
    5. Sound drivers took about 30 windows updates to finally work effectively.
    6. Lost a screw for the CPU cooler bracket and only found it when I went to a wedding 4 hours later... it fell out of a fold in my cargo shorts while I was on the toilet. I had already been at a wedding in a field and dancing around. HOW THE HECK IT STAYED ON MY BODY THAT LONG I HAVE NO IDEA!!!

That's a short list, but everything is now fully functional and oh man... does this baby run and look gooooooooooood.

    Firstly some specs:
    CPU: Ryzen 7 2700X
MOBO: ASUS ROG STRIX X370F GAMING
    RAM: 16GB (2x8) T-Force 3200mhz
    GPU: GTX 1080
    Case: CoolerMaster H500

    Other parts:
    Cooler Master MasterLiquid Lite 240
    Antec Prizm 120mm RGB fans
    Antec cable mods

I have loved and hated this process, but I am so damn happy with the result. My thermals are great (under load 50C on CPU and GPU is about average), no load CPU sits around 35-40 and GPU around 40. If I were to do it again I'd pick a newer motherboard to get full use out of my RAM and overclock the whole darn thing, but I'm keeping it at stock since it does everything I need it to quite comfortably. other than that... I'm in love. I'm so happy with this thing. So... Time for some PC porn? Have some pictures!

Leaktest is passed with distilled water, not a single drop for 3 hours, cable management is also done, time to change the fluid and press the start button.

the rgb controller and pump is powered by external psu

All tubes are washed, all fittings checked for damaged o-rings let the final loop assembly begin

    the first tube installed

    the second

    cpu waterblock is connected

    gpu is installed
I’ve almost started to fill up the loop, but before that I decided to pressure test it with air (da blow test)
Connected a hose to one of the ports on the res and blew into it as hard as I could. The “leak” was found instantly.

Previous owner used to run this gpu in triple SLI and then he was reassemble the waterblock he squashed the o-rings, I borrowed 2 o-rings from gtx-980ti waterblock and it solved the problem
Here is a picture of his insane rig

I’ve contacted the gpu seller last night, he has some spare gaskets and will post them to me. Was really surprised by his behavior, usually it is “sorry mate, it is second hand goods, piss off”

Very slowly the rig is getting finished
    GPU waterblock is properly installed
and slightly modded to make it RGB (I do not see a point of buying an RGB kit from EKWB for $60 if i can diy it for a fraction of the cost)

VGA power cable extension (6+8) is taken apart an reassembled to 8+8

Added another RGB strip next to the top rad and an LED to the res
All RGB is fully tested and working

I did not have a splitter so had to make my own

    The loop is almost done.

Most of the loop is assembled, took me a lot of time to make it all as paralel and perpendicular as possible.
Need to dissasemble it all, check all the fittings, do all the cable managment, wash all watercooling gear. rearange 8+6 vga cable to 8+8 and few other minor things.

    The old loop is drained

installed the motherboard and made the first tube of the new loop

    installed the gpu

Main problem was is lack of tube, I have 2x0,5 meters of new tube so I had to salvage as much tubes and bends from the old loop. (Still have not used the new one)
donated my reference blower style gtx980ti to my step son and installed evga 1080ti sc cooler on it

Started to work on the “new” rig
All 32 gb (4x8) of ram is installed, ssd waterblock is in place

even the ram is completely different (inside) 3200 cl 16 (hynix a-die) and 3600 cl 18 (samsung b-die) all 4 modules started at 3600 xmp and delivered very nice result
however it was unstable and i dropped it down to 3200

I decided to stay this way till it all be installed in the case
    The vrm waterblock
    was installed as well

The plastic cover does not fit perfectly but it can be easily solved with a dremmel

    That is all for today

    So far so good
here is a short story behind it:
got the mobo, got the cpu, mod the cpu, mod the bios with a fully automated tool. Went to a computer repair shop with a programmer tool. Flash the bios chip. And nothing!!! Even g4400 would not start. Bios is corrupted.
so i used asus flashback, got a stock bios on the usb stick and success!!! It has started with g4400, but the Integrated NIC goesn’t work. Missing MAC address.
I is not very clever all the old data on the bios is erased so no MAC, No serial number, no UUID.
spend a few days trying to figure out how I can get this data back. And by lack I went to discord forum where people making it all happen. Got some help.
Next day ordered a programming tool, at the “local” shop (it is around 1000km away from me) cost me around $4 and $5 for shipping)
waited for a week, got the tool and started to create a new bios with correct mac and serial number (UUID is gone forever)
Flashed the bios again with moded bios with all the data. All started with g4400. NIC is working and all is great!!!

(“moded cpu” isolate 2 pins, short 2 pins with aluminium foil)
stick 8700k into the socket. No LUCK, the motherboard just would not start. Discord chat started with people willing to help. One guru of bios modding sent me a pre-made bios.
Flashed again, it is alive, post codes are changing and stop at AD. Nearly successfull post!!! The problem was nvme drive, changed it to normal sata drive and got this screen

window is up and running, 15 minutes later another bios is in the mail. Reflash it again. Windows booted from nvme drive. Great!!!!

however v-core is a bit too high. Rebooted, set it up to auto, disable multi-core enchantment, applied xmp profile.
and here it is: ram is at 3600mHz, cpu is at 4.5 v-core is 1,24 at max with aida stress test.

    The temps are around 73c

With a crappy cooler such as This

Got to wait for vrm waterblock to arrive and will integrate it into existing rig

I've desmissed the idea of using secondhand z170 DDR3 board.
I've bought a brand new board
    Asus Maximus VIII Hero
The price of the board was $100 delivered to my door

Also ordered a VRM waterblock from amazon (22 Euro)

Also borrowed a TOP OF THE LINE SKYLAKE CPU ))))

for testing if it all actually work
prepaired a hacked z170-coffee lake BIOS and found a person with tools to update the bios directly on the chip

Mobo started with g4400, all is working
time to flash the modified bios, mod the cpu and start it all up
WISH ME LUCK, so i do not fry my 8700K nor the RAM nor new mobo.

    Keyboard and mouse
I’ve decided to upgrade mouse and keyboard. Really wanted to get all RGB stuff, but the RGB stuff is not that great if you apply price to performance ratio. It is heavily overpriced if it is not chinese noname stuff.
So the choice I’ve made was - wired corsair k63 keyboard and corsair Harpoon Rgb mouse

I’ve also placed K63 on my kitchen scale
1 kilo of corsair stuff, very impressive, probably the heaviest keyboard I ever had

raultherabbit reacted to kuhnertdm in Elon Musk fails to have defamation case thrown out after calling Thai cave rescuer a "pedo guy"
    Source for background info: https://www.cnbc.com/2018/09/17/telsa-ceo-elon-musk-sued-by-thai-rescue-diver-vernon-unsworth.html
Source for motion to dismiss: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2018/dec/27/elon-musk-pedo-diver-vernon-unsworth-defamation-lawsuit-dismiss
Source (From one of Unsworth's lawyers):

Background: Back when one of the biggest news stories around was the story of a youth soccer team being trapped in an underwater cave in Thailand, Elon Musk publicly decided that he was going to attempt to have SpaceX engineers design a mini-submarine to aid in the rescue efforts. They built the apparatus (which ended up being a simple, small cylindrical container that may or may not have actually been able to fit into the tunnels the kids needed to go through - this is still under debate), and when they showed up to assist, the actual rescue team declined their assistance. When commenting on this on Twitter, Elon Musk called one of the divers, Vernon Unsworth, a "pedo guy". Musk later deleted all the tweets and tweeted a public apology to Unsworth for his statements.

Then, in response to someone on Twitter asking him about the situation, he changed his mind and doubled down by saying that it was "strange" that Unsworth had not sued him yet (Note: By that time, Musk had actually already received initial correspondence from Unsworth's lawyers). He then later tripled down in an online correspondence with Buzzfeed, in which he called Unsworth a "child rapist". He claimed in that same email that that remark was "off the record" (Note: This is not how "off the record" statements work - Both sides must agree before the remark is made that whatever the person is about to say is off the record). In the same email, Musk claimed without evidence or reasoning that the reason Unsworth was in Thailand was to find a "child bride" (Note: Unsworth has been married to 40-year-old Woranan Ratrawiphukkun for seven years now, who has publicly spoken out against Musk for this remark). By this point, Unsworth's lawyers had previously contacted Musk to request an agreement outside of court, but now that Musk has seemed adamant on not caring and continuing to double down, they have chosen to sue.

Story: When the suit was first filed, Musk immediately attempted to have the case dismissed, stating that because the remarks were made on Twitter, one should reasonably expect that what they are reading is an opinion, and not a fact. His lawyers also claimed that his remarks are protected by the first amendment (Note: The first amendment does not apply to cases of defamation). In a public comment on this, Unsworth's lawyer L Lin Wood stated that this reasoning is "novel but inaccurate", as "well-established law" doesn't work like that at all. On Friday, Wood announced that Musk's motion to dismiss the case was denied, which means that now, Musk must go to court to defend himself from the defamation charges.

Opinion: Very good that the judge isn't having any of this. And honestly, once Musk actually does go to court, I really hope that Wood doesn't allow him to settle. This is the most textbook case of defamation that I can think of, and really, the only thing that Musk had going for him (the statements were made online so they shouldn't count, somehow) has now been taken away from him. If there is no settlement, then it's almost guaranteed that Unsworth will win the case, and Musk could finally receive some actual punishment for the way he's conducted himself publicly for years.

raultherabbit reacted to Delicieuxz in "Games as a service" is fraud - An informative and hard-hitting video about software ownership rights and need for advocacy
    1.
For added clarification: A subscription-based game service (like many MMOs) for which you also had to purchase the initial software to run the game (such as in the case of WoW), involves two licenses to play online: A perpetual license for the game software that was purchased, and then a separate subscription license to engage the 3rd-party-hosted game servers to use the purchased game software with.

In these cases, a person owns the base software they purchased, but they don't own the game servers the software runs on and which they pay for a subscription license to use. So, when the online servers stop being hosted, this can prevent people from playing their game apart from exceptional cases and some which involve extreme workarounds.

Ross makes the strong case that this deprives an owner of that software their lawful right to make use of their game property, and so there should be certain rules in place to prevent bad faith business practices and to protect the consumer's rights. And a focus of Ross' video is the aspect of planned-obsolescence of online-dependent games, and how losing server access to play discontinued online games interferes with game software owners' lawful right to make use of their property.

If you think these are reaching arguments, then watch the video and hear how they're not. Ross does an exceptional job in looking at all the likely arguments against the consumer interest, and in offering sensible solutions to them based on law and already-in-practice real-world precedence and convention.

    2.
It's already the law everywhere in the Western world and much beyond that people own the software that they purchase. As far as I've aware, there isn't a standing argument to the contrary. Yet, whenever threads or posts are made in Valve's Steam Discussions and Off-Topic forums bringing attention to the Australian High Court's case against Valve, or other software ownership laws, rulings, logic, etc, a certain Steam moderator, going by the title "Spawn of Totoro" deletes it. And if it's someone else's thread that such information is posted in, they often delete the posts specific to showing those things, and then lock the thread with any other comments in it to create a false appearance of consensus in the thread.

They've been engaging in this unscrupulous behaviour for a long time, and they even block anyone who tries to discuss it with them on their Steam profile page (despite them being a moderator who should be able to discuss community issues).

I've brought this issue up with Steam support on numerous occasions, and they offer no explanation or justification for "Spawn of Totoro's" behaviour, but say they won't do anything about it. I have a sense that this practice of hiding consumer rights and laws from their customers violates consumer rights in some way, and I've told Steam support that I'm going to report this to consumer rights groups (such as those in countries which have taken action and had victories regarding these matters before).

    Here's "Spawn of Totoro"'s Steam profile: https://steamcommunity.com/id/SpawnOfTotoro

There are also some "Spawn of Totoro" sycophants on the Steam forums that try to deny and obscure the fact that people own their software, including Steam-bought software. My experience with them is that they likewise run from discussing the issue when they're messaged on their Steam community profile pages

"The Giving One" is one such sycophant who works hard to try to frustrate efforts to talk about the law on software ownership. Here's their Steam profile: https://steamcommunity.com/id/TheGivingOne

    3.
Here's one more point I'll add that relates to an argument Ross made in his video about planned-obsolescence of games:

Always-online DRM in single-player games is software piracy committed by the publisher and developer. Always-online DRM for single-player games means that at some point in the future when the game servers go down, unless the always-online DRM is removed before then, the single-player game content will become unplayable - not out of necessity, but because the publisher and developer sabotaged its functionality.

Always-online DRM in a single-player game is a promise by the software publisher and developer that at some (usually undisclosed) point in the future, they are going to steal you game from you, just like the example Ross gives in his video of a car dealership coming to your house and taking the car they sold you away from you at some random time.

Remember: Always-online DRM in single-player games = software piracy committed by the publisher and developer, against you, or whoever purchased a game with always-online DRM in it. And when publishers and developers resort to piracy against their customers, then they have no moral ground to complain about piracy against their games.

Here's a list of publishers / developers that have tried always-online DRM in their single-player games: EA, Ubisoft, Epic, SEGA, and now, and just recently with DiRT 2, CodeMasters.

Here's how many of those publishers / developers use always-online DRM on their SP games today: ... CodeMasters.

The reason why they stopped using always-online DRM is because they all learned, the hard way, that customers don't respond well to having their owned games ransomed, crippled, and stolen from them by selfish and arrogant developers using always-online DRM, and that always-online DRM results in sales lost, not sales gained.

By the way, DiRT 2 has completely bombed in sales compared to all other DiRT games, with one of the key criticisms mentioned in user reviews being its always-online DRM. Since shortly after DiRT 2's release, Valve has been imposing a blackout on counting new Steam user reviews for DiRT 2 because, like with its sales, the game has completely bombed in reviews.

Here are some of the games by those other mentioned publishers that tried, and later removed, always-online DRM:

    https://www.pcgamer.com/assassins-creed-brotherhood-drops-always-online-drm/
    https://www.vg247.com/2011/08/23/from-dust-pc-drm-to-be-removed-by-patch/
    https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/09/05/ubisoft-scrapping-always-on-drm-for-pc-games/
    https://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/01/13/simcity_offline_turnaround/
    https://dontfeedthegamers.com/sonic-mania-drm-always-online-removed/

Now, hopefully, you understand why developers don't use always-online DRM.

And for any gamer who thinks always-online DRM isn't a big threat, take note of the rare case where a developer didn't remove always-online DRM from their game: https://www.cinemablend.com/games/Darkspore-Removed-From-Steam-DRM-Errors-Prevent-People-From-Playing-57157.html

Always-online DRM for SP games is an underhanded attempt at forced-obsolescence. People rightly shouldn't support or reward it.

Hell we probably would just end up putting the money into the phone upgrades for my sister and I just because old high(ish) end cards have been totally pricefucked in the past year and a half or so. If it weren't for the fact that dual socket is just so cool, I'd just use my B75 board and GTX 480 since that is better in every possible way (other than I'd need to figure something out for storage since my decent SATA drive selection is non-existent).

raultherabbit reacted to EldritchMoose in Free Speech and Censorship
Free speech as a legal concept ONLY pertains to the government's ability to arrest a citizen based solely on what that citizen has said.

That's where it ends. It does not mean that you are protected if your speech happens to also break another law. For instance, you can (and probably will) be arrested if you walk into a store with a gun and loudly declare that you think that everyone inside should be shot. There are laws against threatening and likewise, there are laws against discrimination and hate speech. Unfortunately, those laws tend to create a gray area where it's up to a judge to decide which law carries more weight in said situation.

As soon as you start talking about privately-owned platforms like forums, social media, regular media, in-game chat, etc. you're no longer talking about "freedom of speech"as a constitutionally-protected right. Not to mention the gray area you enter when you start considering which constitution applies to said platform.

For what it's worth, I think we, as a society, can do well to take a chill pill and start self-policing more. In an ideal situation, we should be able to counter unwanted speech with our own speech, but we don't live in an deal situation. I'm a firm believer in "do no harm but take no shit" by which I mean that free speech is a wonderful thing until it harms entire groups of people.

There is a big difference between disagreement and discrimination, and I think that too many people fall into the trap that entire groups will always be held accountable for the actions of individuals within them.

That's the problem. People still think that every discussion should boil down to "us" versus "them"

Also, "permanently silencing" is the definition of censorship.
