I heard it directly from the fire guys. They didn't word it this specifically but what they said was basically this: "there was probably a short of some kind in this part" while pointing at the adapters.

So I have a little warning for all of you guys looking at these:

I recently bought them for my rig, and I ran them on 2 RTX 2080 GPU's. They do look awesome, and they clean up the cables real nice.

So I put my PC on standby and go to my parents in law for Christmas. About 2 hours later I get a call. The apartment is on fire!

Basically what happened, the PC went out of sleep because a cat probably jumped on the desk or moved the mouse around a bit. The PC booted and idled for a little while.
Then the bottom 8 pin adapter either shorted, or got so hot that the foam on the back caught fire.
Lo and behold, a couple minutes later the entire PC is an inferno.

The neighbors notice, and thankfully manage to put out the fire with a powder extinguisher. Sadly the powder also destroyed all my network and server equipment in my rack. As well as all my peripherals and custom keyboards.

The fire department managed to confirm the fire started in the bottom adapter. It's also almost completely gone, while the other 3 are still somewhat intact.

    Be careful people!

KnightSirius reacted to Spotty in Found lost shipment of Nvidia GPUs
Without any packaging just the card itself, an Nvidia Founders Edition RTX3080 has dimensions of 285mm x 112mm x 40mm. 1.2768L or 0.0012768m3
A 40' shipping container has inside volume of 67m3 (67,000L)
Absolute best case scenario, no packaging whatsoever, no air gap between the cards, the cards fitting perfectly within the container... You realistically could not fit more than 50,000 cards in a 40' shipping container.

But you don't even need to know the volume/dimension to know that 500,000 graphics cards in a single shipping container isn't right. Just go by the weight of a card. I'm not sure how much an RTX3080 weighs. 1.5kg? 2kg? Let's pretend the card went on a diet and it only weighed 1kg. 500,000 cards would weigh 500 metric tonnes. Never going to hold that much weight in a shipping container. The crane at the docks would never even get it on to the ship. 40ft standard shipping container has a max payload of around 25,000kg.

My GTX1080ti retail packaging box has dimensions of 40cm x 24cm x 9cm, for a volume of 8.65L (0.00865m3). You could fit around 7,500 of those boxes in a standard 40' shipping container, which assuming around 2kg per box would put it around total payload weight of 15T, within the 25T payload limit for the container. Seems like a realistic figure.

Realistically there would be less than 10,000 graphics cards in a single 40' shipping container.
Also if it was 500,000 cards that went missing that would be 350 million dollars worth at MSRP. I'm sure Nvidia would go looking for that

KnightSirius reacted to pythonmegapixel in Poll options.
The tickbox labelled "Multiple choice question?" is a little confusing. A multiple choice question usually just means a question which gives you multiple options to choose from, rather than being a free-form answer, but here it's being used to mean that more than one option can be selected by the user. There is also a spurious question mark at the end, which none of the other tickboxes have.

Could this possibly be rephrased to "Allow more than one option to be chosen"

Is it feasible to implement the ability to rearrange poll options once you've typed them? I can imagine something like a little icon to the right of each text box which you can click and drag to move the option up or down.

Its emerged that the 8,000 page Brexit agreement between the EU & the UK which was agreed on Christmas Eve and will be signed into law on January 1st contains references to Netscape Communicator & Mozilla Mail which likely indicates someone somewhere simply copy pasted huge chunks of the document from a very old source.
Perhaps even more worrying though, the document recommends the use of RSA1024 & SHA1, both of which have known vulnerabilities.

Your body temp is 35C. And your skin temp is even lower. Anything hotter will feel uncomfortable to touch for longer periods. The rest depends on what the model is made from. Looking at typical materials for plastic models, melting point ranges from 80C to 130C. The GPU backplate, even at full stress and overheating, won't reach such temps. You are most likely seeing some 50-60C on surface. Like seen in this recent clip with FLIR (and this would be among of the worst possible situations):

KnightSirius reacted to Sofanisse in First build, well in a few decades
So i normally ghost forums and don't take the time to write much, but this is such a good community it deserved a post.

So i haven't messed around with building computers since ATX was a new thing (feeling old) but work, kids and life in general just got in the way. I've gone the easy route and just bought a pre-build one from a decent local computer place. Last fall i realized my monitor was over 10 years old, and thought holy .... this is somewhere i could really get some quality of life improvement. My wife agreed and got me a beautiful curved MSI monitor and that's where the trouble started
Getting a ultra wide screen obviously meant my old rig was struggling to keep up (load times were all ready abysmal, TW Warhammer II) so i thought i'd spoil myself with a semi-new processor to help its all along and just put it in my old rig and call it a cheap update, boy was i wrong haha.

Started googling a bit around and (this is where LTT got my attention) and found out AMD was kinda rocking now, who would have thought. Landed on a 3700x as it seemed like a cheap easy upgrade, however also learned i should get DDR 4 ram to go with it and that none of it would fit in my old motherboard, Challenge accepted! Got a Tuf x570, 2 sticks of cosair ram and the Rysen 3700x with a stock cooler (hey they give you a free cooler now wtf) This would have been the end of it if not for that bloody cooler, installing it i realized it had bloody lights on it (yeah yeah RGB, i've been out of the loop for a long time) i thought that would be cool to see. Around the same time my new monitor went on black Friday sale, i complained about it and got a gift certificate for the difference. Used that to to buy a Cosair Spec 06 RGB, and a 3 Corsair LL 120mm fan with a lighting node, yes i know i got bitten by the RGB bug. Transferred everything to the new case and thought i was done, but nooo iQUE dosen't play nice with the Ryzen stock cooler + that thing is bloody loude, so got a Cosair hydro 100i platinum to replace it and had to rewire the front of the spec case to play with iQUE. After that it seemed silly to not just finish the build so i threw in a modular power supply, a MSI RTX 2070 super, and a few more RGB strips.

    So that the build:

    Case: Spec 06 RGB
    Motherboard: Tuf x570
    CPU: Ryzen 3700x
    Ram: 2x 8gb Corsair 3200 vengence
    GPU: MSI RTX2070 Super
Hardrive: System is on a NVME, with a few SSD's for games and a HHD for storage.
The end goal for the Rig is the same as the previous one: To play Star Citizen if it ever comes out as a full game!

Now i started this journey out as a cheap upgrade, but it escalated so i learned a few things along the way.

1 - I'm stuck wishing i had gotten a 3800x CPU as this one seems limited on power draw when i try to overclock it (any suggestions or just leave it, because the boost is so good anyway?)
2 - The Tuf motherboard is good, but definitely not high end. I spend the first few weeks with the board not booting after a restart until i got a new bios update.
3 - RGB is awesome, but dont get dragged to far in.
4 - The MSI 2070 super its really loud when under load and radiates silly amounts of heat sidesways, to the point where the case glass is silly hot. I considered vertically mounting it, but I'm afraid to just choke it instead. Any thoughts?
5 - i only have 2 intake fans, do i need another one to help with point 4, or do i just need to bite the bullet and have an ugly case with the front panel off? (my wife will murder me if a spend more on another case now haha.

Thanks for reading through my journey of relearning how to build computers, it was a ton of fun to do but really appreciate all the youtube videos.

KnightSirius reacted to LIGISTX in I got an SSD, what are some good ways to optimize it?
I wouldn't worry too much about over provisioning, especially on a 256; its already so small its hard to really give up space. Plus, an 860 Evo will last a lot of write cycles, for a home machine it will last plenty long.

TRIM should be defaulted by your OS... Windows 10 knows what SSD's are by default and sets TRIM up for them automatically. Depending on how much RAM you have, I am not sure I would even bother with RAPID mode either. Dedicating system RAM to try and cache an SSD is not really all that important. Honestly, just plug it in, get your OS and most used programs/games on it, and enjoy :).

The file was dumped just over an hour ago and as well as the two bootloaders it contains a Pokemon Lets Go Beta. TBH I can't find any information on what else it contains (though its not like I've looked too hard) but the Switch hacking community is literally jumping for joy.

I should temper expectations here, this doesn't necessarily mean some big new exploit will be definitely coming as a result of this leak however the scene is now hopeful it will lead to the holy grail of hacks for any system, total system control from power on, no need to chain load or side load anything.
Erista is the first Switch revision, Mariko is the newer refreshed version with an old exploit patched. As you can see, the dump contains both.

Damn, I've been watching the Giga Leaks pretty closely and its been cool seeing all the old betas and unreleased assets they contained but the full source code for the bootloader of their newest and current console is a big deal. So big I can't see Big N taking this one lying down, I'm sure they were pissed at the SMW & M64 leaks but right now I imagine Nintendo HR are being called in on Christmas to get the PIs & Lawyers lined up. Whoever released this is in a whole world of hurt if N ever finds out who they are.

Also worth pointing out, this source code is actually the property of Nvidia, not Nintendo, since its a standard bootloader for Tegra SoCs. Please do not ask for links to, post links to or post any part (file or code) of, this leak to LTT.

Probably that was also done before their released their phone with a notch (granted much smaller, and on lower end models, but still, a notch is a notch).

Considering how Samsung just copies Apple to a point that it feels like Samsung is a sub-division of Apple (my opinion, of course), I don't expect Samsung to reduce the price of their phones either, just like Apple.

That said, Samsung, if I am not mistaken, never shipped any of their phones with the 45W charger required to actually enjoy fast charging. They always included a 25W one, forcing people to buy a different charger.

60fps is not good (especially with a 3070). First-person shooters are meant to run at high refresh. Role-playing games are more meant for ~85fps with better scenery. If you're getting less than ~85fps in Cyberpunk, then I'm sorry, but it's either something with your settings, or your build is all wrong.

Somehow Red Dead Redemption 2, Ghost of Tsushima, The Last of Us Part II, Uncharted 4, God of War, and a ton of other games can have extremely impressive graphics and run at 30 fps on the PS4 but with Cyberpunk to get that level of graphics and framerate I need a GTX 1060 6GB that's 2.5x as powerful as the PS4's gpu and an i7-4790 that can't be any less than 4x the power of the Jaguar cpus in the PS4. And Cyberpunk looks like some weird superposition of N64 and PS3 on the PS4 and XB1. Putting shit in all caps doesn't make any of your points any better. I hope you're being paid for CD PR for this ridiculous white knighting you're doing for a game that was a straight up scam pulled on their biggest userbase, though from the quality of your arguments I doubt they'd be paying you much in that case considering you seem to think ridiculous crap like base PS4 renders games at 4k.

First of all, you should really avoid hitting the swap at all. If you still need one, you need to choose if you want faster swap time (but which will still slow your pc to a crawl) at the cost of reduced ssd lifespan, or if you can manage longer swap times.
