Kind of dodging your question a bit but are you familiar with FreeDOS? It runs on most modern platforms strait from USB. Can be installed easily using Rufus. Works well for playing classic games, text editors, and upgrading BIOS and other system firmware.

KnightSirius reacted to Twiistaah HD in Strange freezing issue in Windows with new 5800X system.
    Hi,

I upgraded to a 5800X around Christmas and have been having a strange issue where Windows will sort of freeze up, the time freezes for example, but some programs that I would assume are mostly loaded into RAM still kinda work. For example, I was watching a YouTube video at the time a freeze happened and the video continued playing, it wasn't until I tried to load a new video that I noticed it had occurred again. It also happened during a zoom lecture, I could still hear the lecturer talking but the video had frozen so I sat there with no video until the end. The cursor can still be moved around and the start menu can be loaded but it can't find any programs, I can't even press restart, it just hangs. The problem is a bit strange and hard to properly explain but I'm really not sure what it could be. I have a video of a time that the error occurred if that helps. https://youtu.be/VwQY8nqiZ5g

    My system is:
Ryzen 7 5800X Asus ROG Strix X570-E (Tried BIOS versions 2816, 3001, 3202, 3405) G.SKILL Trident Z Neo 32GB (2x16GB) CL18 3600MHz Gigabyte GTX 1060 6GB Corsair RM850 NZXT Kraken x52 Samsung 970 Evo 500GB for OS (Currently using an Samsung 850 Evo 250GB which I will explain below) Samsung 970 Evo 1TB for Games Seagate Barracuda 1TB for general storage Seagate Barracuda 2TB for Games When upgrading my PC, I upgraded the CPU, Mobo, RAM, PSU and added the 1TB SSD, other drives and GPU were the same as before.
I'm listing everything because I genuinely don't know what the issue could be at all at the moment.

    I have tried:
Removing all OC's Updating to newest BIOS and tried beta versions Reverted back to stable BIOS I asked on tech support reddit and one person suggested it may be a failure mode of NVMe SSDs, so I troubleshooted my boot drive.
    I tried:
Updating SSD's firmware Uninstalling and reinstalling Samsung NVMe driver Just uninstalling the Samsung NVMe driver and leaving it unistalled Forcing the M.2 slots to run at Gen 3 Making sure the temperatures of the drives would fine Optimising the drive Uninstalling Samsung Magician Reinstalling Windows After the problem was still there after reinstalling Windows, I installed Windows to my old 850 Evo and RMA'd my drive since I've only had it for 2 years maybe. Haven't had any issues for over a week but it's just happened again. I didn't try removing the second SSD which I should have probably also tested but I didn't think it would be to do with that drive if Windows was unresponsive.

Sorry for the kinda long post and not very descriptive title, the problem is a bit hard to put into words.

    Edit:
I forgot to mention, the system started with Trident Z Neo CL18 3600MHz 16GB but I switched it for 32GB of the same speed because I was using all my RAM when hosting modded minecraft servers for my friends. The first time it happened was overnight while running that server, but I can't remember if that was before or after changing the RAM.

    My thoughts
Seems highly interesting, if real. It is on reddit, so it's veracity is obviously unknown. If the price(610 dollars) is correct, then Intel might be competitive for once(before Zen 3+). The gold wafer replica seems cool, and will probably be on ebay for 25 dollars on launch day 😄

    Yep, completely agree.
Genes are not the reason why people become fat. That's just a bad excuse people use to not take responsibility for their own actions.
Eating too much is 100% of the time the reason why someone is fat. It really is that simple. No genes can break the laws of thermodynamics.
The only (natural) way you can gain weight is eating more calories than your body uses.
The only (natural) way you can lose weight is eating fewer calories than your body uses.

The only meaningful ways that genes plays a role in is where you body decides to store the fat. Some people (mostly men) store a lot of fat on their stomachs. Some people (usually women) store a lot of fat on their butts and hips.
Some evidence also indicates that genes might also play a role in which food you prefer. So some people might be more drawn towards sugar for example, and as a result are more likely to overeat. It's still the food that makes you fat though, not your genes.

I'm sorry, but I'm not really sure what you mean here.

You can't what, exactly, because of genes?

You can definitely eat less (less calories in). You can also definitely exercise more (more calories out).

Genes can most definitely impact weight gain and weight loss. Genes can also heavily impact your overall physique.

But you can influence your overall weight, if you have the willpower to do so. Not everyone does.

KnightSirius reacted to Roswell in In regards to the Apple comments made on WAN show
    I linked the timestamp above.

Linus made a lot of false statements and assumptions about our legal system in the US and I figured I would clear them up since... well, said statements are just super wrong. I'll just make the corrections in chronological order:

Apple didn't make any admission of guilt whatsoever, they settled. Nobody "wins" a lawsuit that ends in settlement. If no jury came to a verdict, there's absolutely no reason to infer one way or the other any type of "winner" since there is no result of the suit outside of both parties agreeing that they no longer wish to continue. Part of almost all settlements is a distinct lack of admission of guilt or statement of victory by either party. Antitrust and monopoly prosecution would come from the government, not from civilians in a class action. Civilians can't charge companies or individuals with criminal charges. This was a class action (civil). Said suits are largely judged by legal precedent, which is likely why this suit ended in a settlement since there is essentially no legal precedent that monopolistic behavior applies to a company's own platform instead of a market. Lawyers taking a percentage of a class action is not a "problem" that needs to be fixed. This isn't a criminal trial and someone needs to pay the army of lawyers to work on the suit.  (This one was from Luke) A settled suit does not set any precedent. There was no verdict, no ruling. (somewhat unrelated) 100 million is next to nothing to Apple. They make over $150 million per day in profit. So it’s not exactly the huge blow you you may think it is. They basically lost about 0.2% of their yearly net income.

    My own thoughts...

I would suggest not conflating suits brought by individuals or classes with charges brought by the government. There's a reason why the US government hasn't brought charges against Apple for monopolistic behavior or antitrust violations, there's literally zero legal precedent stating that a company cannot do what Apple is doing. The US government doesn't just let companies flagrantly break laws in the wide-open.

If you want monopoly and antitrust laws to apply to situations like this, you need to push to legislate it, not inappropriately use the terms for things they don't legally apply to in our current legal system.

So you think, politicians are the problem? I don't.
I think, all of us consumers are the problem. You and me included.
We can change our behavior and if we do, companies will change their products.

For example I take my shopping basket to the super market, so I never need any plastic bags or paper bags.
Also I don't get a new mobile phone every year but only every 5 years.
Also I pick my PC components wisely, so that I can easiely use my PC for 5 years before upgrading.
Also I sell my old PCs to friends who have a low budget, so they will be used as long as possible.
Also I don't use an airplane for most of my holidays. I go sailing in my own country using the wind to travel from village to village.
At my parents house, there is a solar panel for hot water, so we don't need gas to heat up water for the shower, the washing mashine and the dishwasher in the summer.

Keep doing stuff like this and motivate friends and family to do the same.

KnightSirius reacted to Mnky313 in Is it possible to use a separate systems GPU to render frames via sending the raw data over an Ethernet cable?
You could mix virtualization with a streaming app like parsec.

On the system with a powerful GPU you could make a VM and pass the GPU through to it, this would allow you to have a completely separate windows (or linux) install that doesn't affect anything else on the machine. Then you can stream that machine's screen using parsec to whatever other device you want to use SW from. It's not a perfect solution as you'd be on a completely different windows install not just rendering SW through it but it's definitely possible.

I had a strong feeling they were going to go 45Drives again for this.

I do feel skeptical about their mention of a SLOG device. From my own experience with ZFS a SLOG device won't accelerate write operations with services such as SMB/CIFS or SSH/SFTP. Based on my own research a SLOG accelerates synchronous write which are often seen in VM applications and Databases. Meanwhile file shares are primarily asynchronous which means if the SLOG is used at all it will only be written to at the speed at which the pool itself can accept the data. This means the primary application of the box won't see any benefit from it.

I'm open to being told I'm incorrect but this was the answer I came to after a long time of researching SLOG devices. L2ARC should be fine though. ARC is data in ejectable memory though. If the system needs more for other processes it can dump the files. Based on the average size of there's though a L2ARC is probably not a bad idea.
