I feel your pain. Here in south africa they also extremely expensive.

    3070 go from R14500 ($903) to R17400 ($1078)

    3080 go from R19200 ($1196) to R25000 ($1558)

For reference import tax is only 10% and Vat is 15%.

The PS5 and Xbox Series X go for R12000 ($748).

Most of the time for Graphics cards its cheaper to order from Newegg or Amazon and import them yourself than buying from a retailer.

MetEishYa got a reaction from Technous285 in Five Eyes (Australia, New Zealand, Canada, UK, US) again call for breaking encryption, says it threatens public safety
What these governments don't get is: If a back door is made for the UK, US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand  officials, other countries like South Africa will also want a back door. The back doors will then eventually get into the hands of criminals organizations as corruption is everywhere in South Africa.
What's worst than no encryption? Compromised encryption were no one knows it has been compromised.

I hope there is no glossy plastic. I hate glossy plastic.
Wish there was a full black version too. I only see it fit with those with white IKEA TV stands. Else it will stick out so much... it's a game console not a conversation piece... but it is hard to judge from 3D renders. I would like to see it in real life.

People call it early 2000 desktop or router look... if it has glossy plastic, I tend to agree. And, like the PS3 and the Wii with their glossy plastic, it will look like shit 3 month after purchase

MetEishYa reacted to Bombastinator in Nissan Switch: cars as a service might already be happening
There seems to be a gigantic attempt to reframe the concept here, and I can’t shake the idea that it’s an artificial distinction.  This kind of service Nissan has was available as early as the 1980’s iirc. Before probably.  Car companies liked to have drivers try out a lot of their vehicles because it increased the chance they would buy one.  Whenever a person went in for dealer service this was generally done.  The whole “cars as a service” thing has been around before there were cars.  The term “cab” predates automobiles.  Human driver, yes, but the concept didn’t fundamentally change. The idea has always been around, and it’s always been a “not quite” thing for most people in most places, except in areas where public transportation is really good and the advantages offered by a private car are only occasionally great enough to make them worth using.  What seems to be making the whole “cars as a service” concept a subject again is driverless vehicles, and whether this is enough to be a tipping point or not.  It might be.  We’ll have to see.

Cars as a service is really just a wrinkle on the concept of public  Taxis. What autonomous driving really does change is chauffeuring.  Makes it cheaper.  Companies like Uber started out as car sharers but wound up as taxi services. Perhaps the chauffeur thing is enough.

The trick is to copyright your face and sue any company that does facial recognition when done on you. Since governments care more about copyright infringement then privacy or any other crime.

MetEishYa got a reaction from Lady Fitzgerald in The end of lightning is nigh, possibly.
This would probably only apply to phones, tablets, cameras, etc which are designed to have a recharge port. If they wanted to go completely port-less then this would not apply to it.

It might stifle innovation an extreme small amount but honestly looking at connectors used over the last decade it really hasn't affect innovation yet so why would it in the future. The lightning port has been around for 7-8 years if ports were so important for innovation apple would have already changed it to something new.

To me Apples concern has nothing to do with innovation and more to do with customer choice. As always its all about MONEY. If they must use Type C customers have far more choice in chargers and accessories.  Third parties no longer have to get the Made for iPhone certification.
Edit: Apple knows that if you have lightning everything you less likely to switch to another manufacture for your phone.

As for this standardization it will be good for the consumer. Can you imagine what a disaster it would be if governments didn't not regulate the plug type all houses must use.

As for the statement that knowing where the police is puts them at risk is BS, if people really wanted to harm police they can just call and report a fake crime then have them go exactly were they wanted.
As for checkpoint it will now mean they actually have to patrol and do there jobs.

This might just have the opposite effect than what they think it might. Example if a creator has 12 012 345 subs its will round to 12M but what happens if the loss say 15000 subs. The actual subs will be 11 997 345 but due to the rounding down it will display as 11M. Effectively making it look like they just lost 1 million subs.

MetEishYa got a reaction from EarthWormJM2 in Article 13 Passes...........South Africa hold my beer. New FPB internet bill.
South African circusparliament passed the Film and Publications (FPB) Bill last week.  The FPB is South Africa's classifications office which classifies films, games and other publications with there rating system similar to the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) in the USA.

The Bill was passed with the premise of protecting children from mature content online. It allows for the criminalization of Revenge Porn and Child Porn. However the bill also states that any distributor of film must have there film classified by the FPB and must be registered as a distributor. This is were things get ugly.
This means that if you share any video, post any video on Youtube or Facebook you will have to have your video classified before you are allowed to post that video. Even include Livestreaming, which is impossible to classify before posting. Here are the implications if you do not follow this Law.
Who does this bill apply to? Everyone whos content/film is available in South Africa ie. Steam, Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, etc. This basically means all Youtubers such as LinusTechTips, Jays2cents and Gamers Nexus, must have there videos classified by the FPB if they make there videos available to view in South Africa.

This is a classic "For The Children!" type of law. It has basically nothing to do with the supposed Pro-Society benefits, thus the first order of business is to figure out who the real target is & the intended collateral damage. UFD Tech hits most of it, I think. The first level is clearly a shakedown law for money. The second level is to squash political opposition. The third & generally unintended level is all video produced in South Africa. (This seems like the result of just incompetence.) Someone's vacation video is now a criminal offense in SA, which is why I'd expect their Constitutional Court to take a hacksaw to the law. Any Media figure or Celebrity will be advised instantly to never go to SA, as they can't use social media for promoting anything.

2019 seems to be the collective year decisions made in 2016, by a bunch of interconnected global players to make the Internet useless for political organization, starts to come to fruition. Expect more of these types of laws, of varying quality & effect, over the next 2 years. We're deep into the point where "The Internet was better back in my day" is completely true. It only gets more ugly from here.

This is scummy beyond compare. The only reason this game exist is because of your backers and now you screw them.

Where is Valve with all this Epic stuff? They should start stepping in and blacklisting companies that start pre-order on steam then at the last moment swap platforms. Removing all there previous games on sale on steam.

Can you imagine the outrage if Microsoft decided that if a developer wanted to have there game on the XBox that they can only sell there game on the Windows Store for PC.

Maintenance is a lot cheaper on electric cars. However the battery has to be replace at some point which is a big cost if its out of warranty. They should get cheaper over time which will help a lot.

Safer is more of a car by car basis. As it stands today the safest rated road car is the Volvo XC60 (https://nypost.com/2018/01/12/safest-car-in-the-world-scored-nearly-perfect-in-crash-test/). Just because is electric does not naturally make it safer nor unsafe however there is good potential for them to be safer. Electric SUV should also be better for roll over because of the lower centre of gravity.

Overall an electric car should be cheaper to run than a gas car. Would like to try and then maybe own an electric car but none here in South Africa worth looking at and the infrastructure is non-existent to support EVs.

The big disadvantages that i see are more to do with Tesla then with EVs. Extremely high cost of damage repair (this will probably make insurance high), the long time to repair (can wait months), extremely long waiting time to get your car when purchasing a used Tesla from Tesla (can wait months), Tesla cars being very unreliable.

The next coming years are going to be interesting for electric car as all the big name are releasing there own Electric cars. Merc with the EQC, Audi e-tron. Hopefully they can improve the industry.
