hiyayhi got a reaction from Darkman in Price of RAM decreasing
A few years ago, RAM prices were SUPER low to the point of the RAM producers selling it at a massive loss. Then there was a fire in one of the HYNIX factories in china and they went through the roof. This was actually an incredibly good thing for RAM manufacturers as they could now make some memory off their memory rather than just giving it away. Now after 2 years, the prices are returning to what is around normal, I doubt they will get back to what they were back then though.

To give you an idea of how silly the prices were back then, (bear in mind I live in AUS where the prices are inflated as shit to start with) I was able to buy 8 gigs of GSkill Ripjaws 1600 Mhz RAM whilst it was at its lowest pretty much, for $50. Now to buy exactly the same kit I would be looking at around $90 and at it's peak just after the fires, I would have paid around $120.

Hope that clears it up a little. Bit of a more detailed post.

    Original Article by experts-exchange.com
    Found on Gizmodo

It's basically just a diagram which tries to visualize and compare old and modern supercomputers and other devices like phones, consoles and even smart watches. Nothing special but I find it interesting anyway.

    Some direct comparisions

I personally like this one because according to cnet.com Sony has sold 20.2 million PS4s by March 2015 so all units combined would have more than 1000 times the processing power of the fastest supercomputer right now. Also the Tianhe-2 costs about 390 million USD whereas 18400 PS4s would only burn a 9.2 million USD hole into your pocket. Also 24MW vs. 2.76MW (source Wikipedia 1, 2)

    Full diagram ahead, warning long:

Edit: I did a bit of googling to determine if Moore was right:

So an Intel 8086 (father of the x86 architecture) introduced in 1978 has a transistor count of 29,000, a fabrication process of 3000nm (3µ), a die size of 33mm² and a whopping 4.77MHz clock speed.
Comparing it to Linus new favorite CPU, the E5-2699v3 introduced in 2014 has a transistor count of 5,560,000,000, a fabrication process of 22nm (0.022µ), a die size of 661mm² and runs up to 3.6GHz.
Separated by 36 years equals 2^18 or a multiplier of 262144 so 29,000x262144=7,602,176,000. Not quite Intel

I don't understand how you can say this. Sure they are expensive, but if it is something you enjoy, and you have the money to burn, why not? Spending money on things you enjoy is spending money well.

Yes, Valve makes a huge amount of dosh from them, but in the end, so what, that's how this world works, one man makes money from another's pleasure and displeasure.

You are meant to be having fun, not bitching because you are a below average player. Your rank literally means jack shit in my opinion, all that should matter is that you enjoy the game.

You're partly right but its not that simple, the gpu is the most important component for gaming, the r9 200 series came in 2013, the 900 in 2014, 300 series mid 2015

Seems to me that if we count both amd and nvidia, there's aproximately a 1 year gap between a new series release (significant difference, not Ti versions or stuff like r9 285 )

For someone like me who can't upgrade at each flagship, I really do need the best bang for buck item.

Oh fucking come on intel. So I have to buy a locked CPU to get access to every instruction set? Either start selling unlocked xeons (they are binned really well, so that would be cool, and it's not like you HAVE to if you are looking for a stable machine) or stop doing shit like this.

Slightly but mostly no.  It was supposed to stimulate the economy,  if you get a sudden influx of people buying goods then there is a sudden cash injection into product movement, this stimulates economic growth. However what actually happen was that most people paid of their debts (which effectively unsettles the loan markets and can do more damage than good) or put it into pokies, The only people to benefit from that are companies like crown and coles who don't need to employ more people for one off revenue increases. Ergo the rudd money essentially did nothing to stave of the GFC.
