I might go for that 1080 if I get a Ryzen 5 instead. My max budget is $1700.

Good thing it is a Pentium, if he screwed up at least he didn't blow an expensive CPU.

It is. The amount of Cores isn't everything, otherwise a lot of people would still be using Core2 Quads. Also clock speed isn't everything ether. My 7 year old old Phenom II 965 (Quad core 3.4Ghz from ~2009) is flat out worse then a lot of the modern CPUs even if they are 3.0Ghz. EDIT: I didn't realize the CPU was that old... damn

The i5 mentioned does have some sorta upgrade path with the 6700k and I think Kabylake is going to use the same socket? - So if the board breaks... Or something, you can still find boards laying around. FM2... I have a feeling will die quickly once AM4 boards come out. - Have they even made new FM2 boards in the past couple of years? I don't think Ive ever seen one with USB 3.1...

Other then that the board has more up to date features like M.2, and USB 3.1.

AMDs CPUs really need an update since they feel like they are really far behind.

You can save some money by doing the upgrades yourself. Upgrading a hard drive or ram on a laptop is fairly easy. However a hard drive dock might be required if the laptop doesn't support two drives or have an optical drive which you can remove to place a hard drive in just to do a cloning. To see a good performance increase you might consider an SSD as the main hard drive and buy an external hard drive later for mass storage. Upgrading the ram should help overall system performance. Since it seems like your planning to squeeze another year or two out your laptop and are not looking to buy a new one, I would get an SSD and 8gb of ram and call it a day for upgrades.

RAM and SSD should keep your machine kicking for awhile. In my particular HP, I swapped the i5-460M for an i5-560M that I pulled from a scrapped unit (royal PITA btw). With the SSD and new battery, it is plenty alive.

Based on amazon prices, this is $586.77. I aim for a budget of $600 or less.

Your configuration can still be different since I'm aiming for a smaller PC.
