Darren got a reaction from Alex Atkin UK in Does my whole connection get taken down if one IP gets DDOS'ed that is different from the other IPs connected to the same modem?
    Everything on your modem.

Think of it as a pipe, ISP gets big pipe, you have a small pipe to your home. Someone floods that pipe, you get very wet and there's nothing you can do.

This is generally why when you get DDoS'd restarting your modem is a legitimate tactic, your ISP will probably assign you a new IP as your old session is still active and the DDoS goes away. Unless you have a static in which case you need to wait it out, or get a new one.

You will want to use fiber here, you want to avoid ground loops caused by bridging two buildings eletrically with copper cabling.

Conduit, run of fibre, cheap media converters or switches on each end with some SFPs from fs.com and you're done.

My point stands:  it was a silly product placement bit and entirely unnecessary for what they were trying to accomplish.

It's because 3Gbps is total of both TX/RX capability, so 1500Mbps in each direction. They could be helpful and say 3Gbps half-duplex but that wouldn't look nice on marketing material.

Darren got a reaction from leadeater in We Got 100 Gigabit Networking!... HOLY $H!T
Where are people installing these 100Gbps SFPs, dust factories? We're not even allowed any cardboard onto the datafloor of most facilities, in fact, one time one of our guys had a small piece in his toolbag and security found it on CCTV and approached him to remove it from the datafloor immediately.

Honestly if your network path bounces between two servers directly connected several times before actually doing something useful, you're probably doing something incredibly wrong, it's such a moot point.

DACs have their use cases but someone commented saying 80+ in a single rack, that's just ridiculous. We have some small VxRail deployments as branch servers and they work well in that instance from a cost perspective but as soon as we're talking entire racks or close to a DC, copper RJ45 for server OOB and fibre for everything else. While my 2c is being submitted, multimode within the datafloor and single mode for leaving it.

What exactly do you mean can't configure it? You'll likely need to bring up serial comms to even figure out what it's doing, a business might have had it wiped, you need to do a TFTP transfer of firmware etc.

Nice! Siae seem to make some nice stuff, though I hated their web UIs. A colleague of mine maintains if someone can make great DMRs with good web stacks would instantly have us as a customer! Our largest dishes were 1.8M and I thought those were huge!

Darren got a reaction from Belgarathian in NZ fibre puts many countries to shame
Kinda, NBN is pretty terrible though, but that's because NBN turned into political point scoring and one of the seven governments Aussie has had in the last seven years had dialled it back and ruined it. The operational challenges are also different, so they say.

NZ is Crown regulated, but not owned. Crown put forward a tonne of capital funds for companies to build the network, in return, told them to only provide wholesale services to provide a level playing field - like you mention. This was critical and has really allowed us to be where we are today. Even the minority of build being given to other plays has helped with that, namely with getting Gig speeds earlier than planned.

Kinda, they're aiming for a huge amount of fibre to the premise, but, to cover everyone and ensure they can get a reasonable service - which they're aiming for 20-50Mbps here.
They're upgrading copper distribution where they can. 4G LTE is making an impact and will make an even bigger one when people can prove 5G will actually deliver a meaningful service. It's great for remote, low usage people. There's a fairly large number of small wireless-focussed providers using commodity tech, think long range Ubiquiti, Cambium, Mikrotik. These providers seem to be trying to shift towards 4G as well, where they can. The Government is really scraping the barrel, you need to be seriously remote to be missed out at this point, though those people will always argue they're not that far from the nearest town.

I wouldn't say that's entirely true, they're still smaller than Spark and Vodafone which are significant customer bases making up a much greater majority of the market.

As for Vocus transit customers, they should be buying redundant circuits. If they don't, well, that'll suck for them.

Add that with a significant portion of content being delivered locally with Auckland based caches on IXs or internally, being without Vocus would be a pretty average time for direct Vocus customers really. I've seen ISPs offload more traffic to Netflix caches than they do with their total International transit.

As far as the legal system is concerned your parents own you until you're 18 or get an emancipation through the courts, so you're wrong, everything they sign for you is legally binding whether you like it or not.

Oh I'm sorry. It sounds like they own the network and do what they like, and you agree to use it how they intend you to. They roll their eyes at kids like you all the time

Also being that guy. The kids don't own the network, and they should do their work.

Yeah, you need to purchase a domain from somewhere like https://www.gandi.net/, point the name at your IP and then you're good.
