  1. Can happily say that I caved in and bought the Xperia 1 V and I am loving it so far. Been using it for a week now and it's fantastic. A few things I'm not 100% happy with, but that's just because I've used Samsung software for... 15 years or so now? Can certainly highly recommend the Xperia 1 V to anyone thinking about a new phone.
  2. The stylus is the least of my worries with a new phone. It was just a comment on what I will miss by switching away from Samsung.
  3. Well I have done more research and I'm pretty sure the Xperia 1 V is what I want. I've found it available online for a few different prices - Amazon is more expensive than a number of cheaper alternatives. Any recommendations on the following websites: https://gadgetward.co.uk/products/sony-xperia-1-v-xq-dq72-512gb-12gb-ram-black-global-version https://www.onestop-digital.com/sony-xperia-1-v-5g-512gb-12gb-unlocked-black.html https://buycheapphones.co.uk/sony-xperia-1-v-5g-dual-sim-12gb-512gb-black-xq-dq72/ The prices are much lower than more familiar stores - are these genuine? Do I get the same protections? Will I get stung with a customs import cost that they're not disclosing?
  4. I gave my own requirements... why can't you just accept that other people use their devices differently to you and have their own opinions on things? I have multiple sets of headphones and other devices that I plug into my phone. I also use them on other devices that only have a headphone jack. I don't want to have to buy several adaptors and then have them eveywhere just in case I need it some time. I want to just have cables where I want them and use them as I want. My partner has Apple headphones, Lightning, 3.5mm, Bluetooth and now USB C, too. None of them stay in my ears. No in-ears or ear buds fit my ears and I WILL lose them. Wired ones are okay as they are still attached and won't vanish into the aether so easily. Storage is because I do not rely on other services existing forever and like to keep my own stuff locally. I have a server at home full of media and often download stuff to my phone when I go away. My home internet is supposed to have a 99.99% uptime but that is not accurate and it annoys people all the time. I'm happy because I just turn the TV to my server and have at. As for mobile data... well let's just say that the UK is not 100% covered. I have hundreds of spots where I can be driving along and my podcasts or music cut out because there is no signal for miles at a time. Have it all on my phone and I have no problems. You may suggest that I just put a few artists/TV shows/films that I want on my phone at a time, but, particularly with music, I want all I listen to on there all the time as I don't know what I'll be in the mood for later. TL;DR: I do things my way and I want to continue to. If you don't agree with that, it's fine. But don't try and force your way onto me.
  5. I don't stream everything off mobile data and 256 or 512GB is not enough for the stuff I do have. As for the headphone jack, I still have old tech I plug into, plus all my headphones are wired with 3.5mm and I can't stand Bluetooth in-ears. I also want to be able to plug into headphones and a charger or external device with USB C headphones/adaptor. As long as _something_ has support for it, I'm happy. I tried a few different OSes for my Note 9 and was quite happy with 3 or 4 of them but stuck with the native-based custom ROM due to familiarity. EvolutionX was fantastic on this phone but I wanted my Samsung stuff. If I lose that option, something like EvolutionX would be perfect.
  6. Useful info, thanks. I don't have superfast chargers, just whatever came with the Note 8 or 9 is my charger. I have somewhat abused the battery and have had it wireless charging in a hot environment for years so that's probably what's killed mine. If the battery is good enough on the new phone, I could turn on the max 80% thing and probably cope just fine. Full transfer with accounts too is a great bonus, so I shall definitely try that. I do have a C to C cable. Knowing that ROMs are already popping up is good info so fills me with confidence. The tallness and skinny-ness of the screen is weird to me, but I'm sure I'll get used to it. One other thing I recall being a problem is the back and recent apps buttons not being switchable. But I guess I'll get used to that or will try and get used to gestures (which I've never got on well with). My partner is familiar and can show me how to operate modern technology.
  7. I have a Galaxy Note 9 and love the form factor. But my poor old phone is starting to become a burden as it's just too damn old now. I have wiped the original OS and installed Noble ROM to try and eek out a little more. It has helped, but not solved the problems. I've been holding out on replacing it as I refuse to buy a phone that doesn't fit my requirements: - No hole punch or notch. - MicroSD slot - Headphone jack I will miss the stylus, but even Samsung make that a rarity now. And there are a few things I actually love about TouchWiz/OneUI - I know, it's blasphemy but hey, I'm weird. Anyways. I searched for phones that fit my criteria, expecting no results and was shocked to find TWO phones that fit the bill. Both the Xperia 1 IV and the Xperia 1 V. Now, I don't need the highest-end hardware, but it's always a bonus and so the 1 V would be what I'd look at. Besides, my preliminary research yielded info that the IV was an overheating, broken mess. The V seems to have solved those issues, though. The major things that concern me with it are: - Lack of support (only 3 years vs other top brands now supporting 5+ years). I am feeling the pain from my Samsung phone that only had 2 years... FIVE years later! - My desire for rooted stuff on my phone. But I have just read that Sony have an unlocked bootloader. So free to tweak as I please? Unlocked bootloader may negate the lack of support issue too. Thoughts? - Camera being for photographers. I'm no photographer and do want a point-and-shoot that takes good photos. I'm sure it's poor pictures are better than my Note 9, but would a different camera app maybe help this? - Moving data from my old phone to the new one. Having used Samsung Smart Switch along with Google backup, I have almost always had everything but logins copy across. Will all of my wifi connections and settings copy across, or is this a thing I'm going to have to give up? - Anything I haven't thought of. Anyone have further thoughts, particularly someone in my boat who has switched? @ExInferis I found your thread about troubles with other phones and you landed on the Xperia 1 V. How has your experience with it been over the last couple of months? Still happy?
  8. I'm intending on running 1:1. I didn't explicitly say it in the OP but when I said I can't push either the memory or the fabric clock up, my end-goal is 4000MHz RAM (2000MHz actual speed) along with a 2000MHz fabric clock. Is there something else I need to keep at the same rate or is that everything?
  9. If you manually specify the fabric and memory clock, I thought you continued to get the 1:1 ratio?
  10. Got a new 5950X with some 4000MHZ CL16 GSkill Trident Z RAM. I can get the RAM to run at up to 3800MHz and I can get the fabric clock to run at up to 1800MHz. If I try and take the RAM beyond 3800, I get a few attempts to restart and then it errors and boots in safe mode, asking me to update the config. If I try and take the fabric click beyond 1800, the computer tries to boot, shows an error on the RAM POST LED on my motherboard (Asus STRIX X570-e Gaming) and then stays in that state indefinitely., requiring a CMOS reset. I haven't and don't know what voltages to increase (if you can) to try and push further and get a stable system at the rated RAM speeds. Which ones do I need to to tweak and what are safe-ish parameters? Any other OC tips for this platform as my familiarity is first gen Core i7 and X79 (3930k) OCing.
  11. Budget (including currency): Flexible. ~£3000 Country: United Kingdom Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: VR games. Sim racing and AAA games. I like to do 20 things at once with my PC and need as much power as I can get. Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): Already have peripherals, etc. Just need tower components. Old PC is 4790K + 980Ti and NEEDS heavily upgrading as it's almost never not at 100% usage somewhere. CPU: Looking at 5950X but would consider 10900K or wait for Intel 11th gen. When this machine is replaced, I intend to continue using it as a hypervisor so more cores is more better. Yes, a 5900X would do - but I want more. RAM: 2 x 16GB G.Skill Trident Z at 4000MHz CL16. A component I've always cheaped out on but won't this time. I've had 32GB for nearly 10 years and that's a good amount for me. I needed it back then and still need it now - but somehow don't need more yet. Any objections? Happy to tweak timings, OC fabric, etc. Motherboard: Gigabyte Aorus Master X570 is on the list as are both the Asus STRIX X570-E and Crosshair VIII Hero. I want 10G LAN but will settle for 2.5G. I also like a lot of USBs and prefer to have a couple of USB 2 for troubleshooting but accept that it's deprecated. GPU: 3080 or 3090. Hoping a 3080Ti will release and waiting for availability - this will be purchased later. PSU: Haven't decided. Love my EVGA Supernova G2 750W but think I might overtax it so intend to replace. Happy to go with EVGA or whatever is recommended. Corsair RM850i or what? Not worried about over-speccing PSU and happy to spend a good amount. Cooling: May or may custom cool in the future but looking at Arctic Cooling's Liquid Freezer II 420mm/360mm. May go 280mm but it's only a few quid more for the bigger sizes. Case: Undecided. I like my Define R4. Need space for watercooling and have a 900D I could use if need be. But I want sleek and non-showy. Storage: Complicated. I want NVMe storage for my OS and separate storage for my games, etc. I will use some (~300GB) of the storage drive as a cache for HDDs I'll add (but already have). Have always used Samsung and see no reason to switch but open to suggestion. OS drive will be ~500GB. I want all the storage to be SSD but it's soooo damn expensive that 2-4TB is my limit. Again, wanting it to be NVMe but happy with PCIe 3 instead of 4. Short version: Top tier AMD or Intel CPU (more cores=better future use). 32GB of fast RAM. High-end motherboard +2.5G LAN. Top-tier GPU but waiting. Top-tier appropriately sized PSU. NVMe for OS and another NVMe for data. Case, cooling, etc flexible. Looking to buy soon but unsure of if I should buy guts immediately, wait for Boxing day/January sales or maybe wait a few more months for Intel 11th gen and/or higher availability of parts. Thoughts, everyone?
  12. Linus has been raving on about Optane and how fast it is for ages, most notably in the recent stream (or was it a video?) on the editors' new workstations. Now my understanding of Optane is that it has faster access times than normal SSDs. However, the IOPS are similar, if not lower, than some of the PCIe NVME SSDs around. Do the IOPS not relate to the access times in some way? Do they not make more of a difference too? My overall question is: how much faster would an Optane drive be than a PCIe SSD? Even a PCIe 4.0 one? I mean that in terms of responsiveness, not sequential reads, etc. As a power user that often has many programs open doing countless things in the background - would I notice a difference more? I've coped just fine on my SATA SSDs for the last 10 years and want all the info before I splash out £500 for Optane.
  13. Hey, the one thing I'll always say about Corsair support is that they are fantastic. I specifically do recommend them to people just for that fact. Any Corsair product I've had issues with, they've been happy to help diagnose and then replace if necessary. That being said, I would still feel bad if they replaced another one... I mean... The warranty is 5 years and I know that it's out of that time because I got two at the same time and just a couple of months ago got the other one replaced. Then again, it's my gain and their loss so I just may well go for it.
  14. Yeah, I figured it would be. Nothing I can do to fix it? I would contact Corsair since they're absolutely fantastic buuut I got a free replacement from them for another out-of-warranty H100i recently and I would feel bad asking for another, even if they gladly accept it. Haha! If I'm honest, though, I don't think this cooler has ever been fantastic on this CPU. I'm pretty sure I was always somewhat disappointed with the temps even when it was new. Though it's fair to say they have degraded.
  15. Hi guys, I've never noticed a problem before since I rarely hammer my CPU to 100% but since I've been folding, I noticed my CPU throttling to about 4.2GHz instead of running 4.4 all day long (stock clocks). A quick look in HWMonitor showed temps in the region of 40C idle and 100C at full load which seem excessive for an H100i. I did the usual re-seat CPU and cooler and noticed the backplate for the block is loose. Some Googling suggested this is somewhat known and some foam strips to solidify it on the board would work. I didn't have any but had some rubber O-rings and so used those as spacers to keep the backplate sturdy. This seemed to work but my temps are still awry. Idle has dipped to about 35C but that's still not cool, and then at 100% load it's still hitting 100C. Any suggestions on what to do? It's clearly still somewhat working but it's not right.
