People who build their first computer but then pay extra for a company to actually build and ship it, i always would want to build my own pc. I exactly know how it was built, where everything was put and built to my high standards for most things

MrDucco reacted to tomas710 in Fractal Design Venturi Fans - Worth It?
Budget is a personal thing i try not to say what's 'right' but for me, you spend money on fans that make a direct performance difference (Heatsinks, rads, front and side intake if it goes torwards the GPU) I don't think you would see a difference at all with top and rear fans, so I would put 2 venturis on the front, and populate the rest of the case with stock fans, which are totally decent by the way.

    EDIT

Just noticed you plan on getting the airflow version, get the high SP version for front intake, and while we are at it, AP123s from silverstone are great and super quiet front intake fans, and i believe they are not as expensive as venturis

great, but this cooler is a hassle to install...that's the only negative thing about it though...it's nice...just take your time to mount it properly...everything else are good choices.

I made some adjustments, hopefully it's all good now

I changed the cooler, SSD, RAM and PSU

    Great CPU.

    Wasting money on that RAM.

Seems like a good motherboard, but could probably spend less and get the same stuff.

    Great choice on Graphics Card.

Standard HDD, so that's ok, probably not enough space for video/photo editing.

You could save money elsewhere and get a better SSD.

CPU cooler will work, but don't expect a great overclock with low temps.

PSU looks to be enough power, not the best, not worth upgrading though.

    My recommendation? ...

Get lower speed RAM, all that 1866 speed crap is not going to be noticeable compared to 1333 or 1600. so you are wasting $100 for "more speed".

Get a different motherboard with the same features, you will still get a quality motherboard, just at about 2/3 the price.

With all that saved money... Buy a AIO CPU Cooler, and a better quality SSD.

He mentions game making and photo./video editing and you tell him to get a an i5. Sure for gaming i5 is fine. But that's not the only thing hes doing.

Build looks good to me.Unless your going to be overclocking very high cooler should be fine

    CPU:                               Intel i7 4790K
    RAM:                               Hyper x Fury Series (16GB 2x 8GB) DDR3 1866MHz
    Motherboard:                  Asus-Tek Computer Z97-Pro GamerATX
GPU:                               EVGA GTX 970 Superclocked ACX Cooler 2.0 4GB VRAM
    HDD:                               1TB Caviar Black
    SSD:                               Kingston Technology 240GB Drive 2.5inch V300
    Cooling:                           Cooler Master Hyper 412s
PSU:                               Corsair builder series CXM 500w Semi-Modular
    Case:                              Fractal Design-Define R4

The one thing that i'm not sure about is the cooler, will it be sufficient for the CPU especially when under load

    Thanks for any replies

You shouldn't use Cpuboss. Their comparisons are highly inaccurate.  The new cpu will technically be a downgrade, but not by much. The 2630qm is a proper quadcore, while the 4200m is a hyperthreaded dual core. You won't notice it at all in real world applications. If you plan on using the laptop as a desktop replacement though, you might want to go with the i7.

Also that PSU is way overkill. you'll need a 550W tops for what you're doing.

I did some research and found a data table showing results on testing

Performance Benchmark performance using all cores   Core i7 2630QM 7.8   Core i5 4200M 7.1 Passmark, GeekBench (32-bit) and GeekBench (64-bit)   Single-Core Performance Individual core benchmark performance   Core i7 2630QM 7.9   Core i5 4200M 8.7 Passmark (Single Core)   Power Consumption How much power does the processor require?   Core i7 2630QM 5.2   Core i5 4200M 5.3 TDP   Features How does CPUBoss rank the features of each product?   Core i7 2630QM 6.6   Core i5 4200M 5.6 Features and specifications that differ between products   CPUBoss Score Performance, Single-core Performance, Power Consumption and Features   Core i7 2630QM 7.2   Core i5 4200M 7.1

I found this on CPU Boss and it shows that in all of them the i7 wins (except individual core benchmark and temperature) but not by much, plus the final score was,
    i7 = 7.2
    i5 = 7.1
So from the data virtually no difference in the overall score but i havn't either of these processors, so i can only go on with the data. Hope this helped

Looks good. The cooling performance will largely depend on how much you overclock. Under stock settings don't sweat it.

"Upgrade-ability" is overused when talking about Apple PCs. Most people who buy a computer from a store in the first place have no intention of upgrading it - they just buy a new one after about 5 years.

Also, it's hard to call this overpriced when it has a monitor of this spec. I get that some people can't afford them or would say "Just BUILD one, way better value!" - but this is the case with *all* prebuilts and it, of course, is a better value proposition to build a computer.
