If you use some no clean flux, it can do a pretty nice job. A good oven also helps. It's important to get the right temperature, time and just overall do it correctly (when it's done cooking, just leave it to cool and don't touch it, the solder is molten) It's also a good idea to insulate other components, especially capacitors and plastic parts. Then the risk of damaging the board and components goes down quite a lot.
