  1. Hi everyone, I'm planning to upgrade my PC for school so I can tackle AutoCAD better and eventually Revit in a year or 2. My current desktop can't do it anymore as my AutoCAD drawings are getting large and everything's getting slow. Location: Canada Primary Uses Now: AutoCAD, Office Suite, Web Browsing, Light Gaming, Photoshop 2D Primary Uses Future: Revit (probably in a year), and Adobe Suite but mostly Photoshop rendering for buildings Other Uses: I kind of want to play around in blender and see what it can do, and I usually don't turn off my PC ever since I use it as a media streaming/torrent machine too. Games I Play - The Sims 4 with a lot of CC, Cities Skylines, Civilization, and I might get Overwatch. I figure I don't need much to run all those on max settings at 1440p This is where I'm at currently. I don't know what to choose for a motherboard, I have the NVMe and the SSD listed because IDK which to get, and I don't know what case to get. The parts listed for $0 are parts from my current PC that I'm going to use for the next one. Budget is around CAD $2000 but I can flex it a little. I am very set on intel/nvidia since they tend to play nicer with my software. I'm trying to build a rig that can blast through the software that I use, and that is also quiet and cool. I have a Fractal Design Define R4 but I want to change it because I'm kind of bored with it since I've had it since 2014. I like non window cases though since I move the PC between home and school so it's likely to get scratched. CPU - nearly identical to the i7-8700k which Linus says is a good option if you can't afford the i9 series. Cooler - heard from many it's a solid choice if you don't care about it's look. I want a case that's windowless so I don't care. RAM - It's cheap and from a good brand. I definitely want 32GB because I might be running CAD, Photoshop and other stuff like Chrome at the same time Storage - I just want more super fast storage but maybe I don't need it GPU - it's the cheapest of the newest lineup and it should be able to handle all my tasks well PSU - I might change this, but this is the one I've had running since 2014. Should I keep it or change it? I might need another SATA power cable though, I don't know where my original cables are.
  2. Hello everyone. I'm trying to find either a monitor or small TV for an xbox one X since I plan to get one around e3 this year. I'm having trouble finding one that meets the specs I'm looking for though, let alone at a mid range price. I'm in Canada and don't wish to get a screen imported from the USA or elsewhere. I'm looking for these stats - 1440p or 4K - IPS panel - HDR10 support (that what MS says the XB1 needs) - 27" or less (bigger won't fit my VESA dual monitor mount because it only accepts 2 27" screens and I already have one) - VESA 75/100 mountable Having freesync would also be cool if possible, but not a deal breaker for me. I'm trying to find all that for around $600 CAD or less if possible. I don't mind waiting a bit for a sale either if it's great but also a bit more expensive. I switched from playing my xbox on a tv to my ASUS PB278Q and it looks so much nicer, so I'm set on having IPS and 1440p now that the xbox one x and s support it. Anyone have any suggestions? If my ASUS PB278Q supported HDR10 it would be perfect, but unfortunately it does not.
  3. I didn't think about it falling that way but yeah you're right, I'm just really glad it didn't fall off the table and hit the floor. Then it would probably be junk. Yup powered off and unplugged. Wasn't using it at the time, just had it sitting near by for when I wanted to use it. I didn't know that's how the heads in drives reacted when powered off, I thought they stayed wherever they were when it was shut off or unplugged. I learned something new, thanks! It's good that they do that otherwise a lot more people would probably have dead or damaged drives. How does the head manage to move back if it suddenly loses power though? There doesn't appear to be an off button on WD My Books so I frequently just unplug it once I'm done and have closed all the open files saved on it. I haven't plugged the drive in since this happened actually, but I will check it out soon.
  4. Hello everyone, I know you aren't supposed to drop a hard drive because it can seriously damage them, but what about if they go from standing vertically to flopping over horizontally? A cat knocked my WD My Book over (seriously that's what happened), and I'm not sure if there's a way I can check to see if there's any damage done to it before I use it to organize data from some other drives I have. I don't want to load it up and all of a sudden poof, it dies and all my data and hard work is gone. It flopped over on a hard table sadly, not something soft like carpet, but it was unplugged at the time thankfully. Only reason I'm really concerned is because I want to use this drive to hold data from other drives as I format them and do some reorganization. It will hold the only copy of some important data for a short period of time, so I don't want it to die in the middle of my reorganization. Is there anyway I can check for damage using software? It's one of the newer WD drives that has hardware encryption so I can't remove it from the enclosure or it will be useless.
  5. Thanks guys, that' pretty close to what I thought I should do.
  6. Hey guys, The title pretty much says it all. I'm just wondering what the proper order is to install the updates and where I should get the updates from? Windows Update is the last thing you should do I've heard, and chipset drivers from the mobo manufacturer is the first, but what about everything in between? I just built my first PC and I want to make sure I don't screw it up.
  7. No, I tried it both ways and it doesn't fit my case. It's a Thermaltake, it's weird. I'm waiting ont he EVGA Supernova 750W G2 to arrive this week. In the meantime, would it be safe to at least setup everything on my PC and use it for a little while until the new I/O and PSU arrive?
  8. Okay well I'll get a new shield then. I have to re do the wiring anyway cause my PSU doesn't fit my case because I somehow got the one psu that has odd screw holes in the back... lol. So I'll redo both at the same time.
  9. I got the motherboard in no problem now, PC turned on, nothing seems to be damaged at all, but someone told me the use of those shield tabs is for grounding so the mobo doesn't fry and take out other parts with it. That's why I'm not sure if I should jsut spend $10 and get a new shield form ASUS for the H97 Plus motherboard. Those tabs are super, super annoying.
  10. Hey guys, You know those I/O shields from ASUS and possibly other brands that have a bunch of metal tabs that bend easily and can sometimes snap off? Well I couldn't get the motherboard to fit because of them being in the way and it was my first time building so I didn't want to break the motherboard, so after someone suggested it I decided to snap them off. I left the tabs alone that are on the actual motherboard but the I/O panel doesn't have any anymore. In hindsight that was probably not a great idea, but will those lack of tabs damage anything? I don't even know what they are there for but this is the first motherboard I've seen with tabs, the others were all flat. I can get a new I/O shield if I should, they're really cheap.
  11. Thanks everyone! I ended up going with the EVGA 750 G2 here http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-power-supply-220g20750xr after reading a jonnyguru review and checking out customer reviews.
  12. I was hoping to keep it under $150 Canadian. Preferably even less since I've seen some EVGA Supernovas go for $120 on sale here and there and they are 700W+
  13. I was also on the fence for cases and went with the Define R4.
  14. Hey guys, I'm building a PC and I need a PSU for my last major component. I will be adding more stuff so something in the 550W-600W is good, preferably fully modular and silent operation like the Seasonic G series. I don't quite know what I want this PC to be int he long run, I would like a PSU that can survive through multiple upgrades and maybe even SLI if I ever do that after getting a new motherboard + another GPU. I just don't know what OEMS aside from Seasonic are good, so I'm open to suggestions. My current setup: http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/yv6Bzy Edit: I would like to keep the cost under $150 CAD, even lower is better.
