Visual Studio CPU Hardware recommendations
igormp replied to Agall's topic in CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory
How much RAM do those systems have? I'd guess that they're just running out of RAM instead of CPU, keeping a close look at how they use their systems would make it easier to help you with that. Not really, no need for a dedicated GPU, just an integrated one will do the job, unless they work with something GPU-related. That's if you want to work with CUDA, not that VS will make use of CUDA. Funny how you haven't mentioned RAM in any point I'd say no. There are no benefits for CUDA or RTX, it's just a text editor, not a Triple A game, video editor or 3D software lol -

The i9-10900 in a fully featured rig would likely be fine, but they're Dell SFF systems that would probably struggle to handle the i5 variant. AKA, shouldn't have been purchased for users that are regularly in high CPU utilization scenarios. They already dusted what little dust was in the machine, and they might need a repaste, but I'd rather upgrade those workstations and use those systems for less intense use-cases. -
Best way to compress files from another machine?
jaslion replied to Britishblue's topic in Servers, NAS, and Home Lab
Just zip the files over the network? Or what do you mean with compress? Rencode em? If so same story rencode over the network -

Visual Studio CPU Hardware recommendations
Agall replied to Agall's topic in CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory
They're all in house developed in C# or C++. So, nothing really crazy in terms of complexity but do get relatively large from what I've seen. Considering the background applications are already a struggle without compiling code in the foreground, you can imagine how slow a compile could be. The i9-10900's they're using now being in SFF Dell OEM systems are severely thermally and TDP limited, while factoring in that anything 13th/14th gen is markedly more capable in single and multithreading. -

Are you working with video? Quicksync only is used when encoding/decoding video. A task I dont see super common for most development tasks, but really depends. AMD also has encoders/decorders on their iGPUS that do the same. What is the usage reported in task manager when the programers are working? DO you see high CPU, Disk, Memory, GPU or other usage? I'd guess a 10900 is a pretty good chip still and don't think your gonna see a massive performance improvement going to current hardware. -
Hi I have a jellyfin server and my storage is full. I wanted to compress everything a bit so I can fit more stuff on it, but the computer running it on ubuntu has a crap CPU. My main machine (i5-12600k) would probably do it a lot faster. However the hard drive is in the machine internally and I really REALLY dont want to have to take out the hard drive, put it in my other machine every time I want to compress something. Is there a method I can use to compress it using my main machine? I was originally going to put it on my external hard drive then take it over and send them back on the external hard drive. But it would take like 8 hours to copy everything for 1 way which is too long. And I cant even leave it overnight because its only a 500gb drive so couldnt even hold everything in one go. Thanks

RTX3070 stuck at idle core clock and max power consumption
Levent replied to Erhyll's topic in Graphics Cards
pull all your shunt resistors off the board and check their resistance. ALSO before all that, check to see if you see anything abnormal in gpuz. Here is my 3070 while furmark is running. -
This cable couldn’t fit in the normal chassis so i fitted it out from the back. Is there a danger that i did this? Maybe the cable get sucked from fan and ? idk i am kinda paranoid so yea (while taking photo gpu and cpu at full cooling 100%) and like in a picture to cables one from usb 3.0 port and from gpu power supply touches is there a danger to something if they touch? Like a short? I uploaded a picture 73507346278__78D07278-0212-4879-ABF6-9C2EE79BB13C.MOV

Peacheling replied to Peacheling's topic in Graphics Cards
so i just game at 1080p i mostly game only and i play games like resident evil, gta, fortnite, is there a big difference between a 4070 or 7800 xt i also had one person say the 7900 would be good -
sounds like a driver issue... i havn't had mine connected for ages.. but did you install latest logitech gaming software? have you calibrated it?

Hello? Did you even read what I said? I said that the vertical mount won't be a problem cause I won't use the side panel. And for the CPU, gamers nexus only tested air cooling, not water cooling in the Y40, and I'm going to use water cooling, a 280mm AIO whith the ability to breathe should be good, and whith temperature not being a problem in the way i plan to use my system, asthetics mster to me, and i like the Y40s asthetics, you maybe don't, and i don't care about your opinion on the asthetics, that is my personal preference, so please, don't say the same things over and over again, actually read the person's message, and respond to what they said, not something else, thank you for your time.

what lower budget alternative can i get to the rx 6600?
PDifolco replied to busby_bee_boy's topic in Graphics Cards
Good However what do you want to do on this machine ? 6600 is the bare minimum for decent 1080p gaming (new AAA games at least), but for anything else the 12100 is pretty limited (4C/8T) And really your budget is short £100 for a decent rig imo : it will cost you £100 upfront sure but swapping the CPU for a 5700X will make it last at least 2 years more, and will be worth more on resale, for overall less money -
PC for machine learning and gaming?

it's fine, price or brand don't matter if it's now for RAM that much, DDR4 especially, that one's a solved platform basically- 22 replies

I fully reassembled it while troubleshooting, and moved m.2 ssd to other slot "just incase". But I'll try tomorrow once again. I doubt it would help, but it won't hurt either, so I'll give it a try. Mobo and cpu are new-ish, just as other parts, but it's not a guarantee that they are fine. Have no idea how to test them separately without buying replacement, though, which is not an option. Not rn, I don't have a reliable usb drive. Should buy one at first. Also, PC seems stable once again. It turned off three times in ~20 minutes after initial boot, and now it "warmed up" and works as intended. That's an odd pattern...

Currently using a 6850M XT eGPU with my Flow X13 laptop. It is a desktop 6700xt and performs exactly the same as one, and does okay at 4k, running most games at high 60fps with FSR. That said, I'm not super satisfied with FSR, it's substandard upscaling and while it's a lot better than nothing, it doesn't hold a candle to DLSS. That said, XeSS 1.3 is amazing, works on all GPUs, and this makes me think... I had a $1300 budget for a build, and I can get a WHOLE lot more GPU for my money with AMD (7900 XTX, $800), than NVidia (4070 Ti Super, $800) in terms of raster performance. I intend to use heavy upscaling and frame generation to hit my 4k 120fps target, and DLSS is still by far the best looking upscaler. However, Intel looks to be catching up. So... What should I get? Hedging my bets.
