    cat thread

Harvey is enjoying the SoCal weather's return to form this week.
  5. your way over thinning is dont worry about dust it can be cleaned. cats like to sit on top of case. unless you add something to the top that they dont like what i dont no... scarf icing cooling for dust is stupid.
  6. your download speed isnt fast enough to cause the slowdown youre experiencing IMO, but your CPU usage in general seems fairly high(this may be because of the screen recording though). TBH im not sure what the issue may be. but i wanted to reply, maybe this bump will get someone else who can help, sorry
  7. Most of it, I'd say (at least as far as the CPU side goes). Intel sort of leveled off after Sandy Bridge and coasted until Zen finally forced its hand. I just retired a 2012-built 3770k setup (with OC to 4.2GHz) in January, that was "enough" for a VERY long time (with GPU upgrades from a 460 to 660, 760 (4GB), 970 and finally 1080). Being originally built as a workstation, it had 32GB from the start. It only started to seem a bit long in the tooth by 8th gen when Zen's arrival finally freed consumer chips from Intel's 4c8t holding pen, and even then, my games didn't start noticing or wanting more CPU/cores for a while after that (in part because I wasn't playing big AAA titles).
  8. Not to completely discredit you on this, given how much pain I suffered with daily driving Linux before switching back to a main Windows OS (switched back since I got a new laptop and wanted the familiar convenience of Windows), but do you have any specific evidence of this that you may link here publicly? It would truly be a shame if what you're saying is true, but last time I checked most software developers in general want end-user actions to not feel so painful (e.g. Valve with their hard work making ACO for linux gaming, the Keepassxc developers working tirelessly to bring a good password database manager to the masses), so I'm a bit surprised that you'd say this, albeit not totally shocked given some behaviors and words I've seen from at least a few FOSS fanatics (cue Linus Torvalds cursing out kernel devs).
  9. Or again, bloatware. How much ram is being used when you have NOTHING open?
  10. It hit 74c in time spy extreme, monitoring with hwinfo. Of course I haven't played any actual games yet have to tune my RAM first lmao. And my bios almost died, so there was that
  11. Watching Fleetwood Mac videos on youtube. >SMSL SU-1 > DV336 (vintage rca 6SN7 and GE GAS7G tubes) (preamp) > Sony TA-N77ES > Yamaha NS-344 10" 3-ways.
  12. I just "inherited" an MSI GTX 1070 ARMOR 8G OC (Micro-Star model no. MS-V330) link to likely product specification and I am trying to connect it to my power supply, which is a Corsair CX-500M link to product specification. I have a cable with the following connectors: All 3 plugs (left [6+2], middle [6+2], right [8]) can be plugged into the graphics card. The plug on the right [8] is not insertable into the power supply (there's a plastic tab between the 2 square pins on the top right), but can be plugged into the graphics card--thus, the left and middle plugs can be plugged into the 8-pin socket in the power supply. Can I plug the plug on the right into the graphics card and the one of the other (left or middle) plugs into the power supply? My understanding is that the 6+2 plugs are normally for the graphics-card side, but it seems like in this case, it's the reverse.
  13. I did the ddu thing for my new graphics im going from a 570 to a 6600 and i upgraded my ram from 8 gb to 16 gb but there is no display, does anyone kno why ?
  14. if only they had this technology during the Emu War
  15. I am trying to find a gaming monitor for competitive Fortnite that will pair with https://pcpartpicker.com/list/hfcxqR that wont hold it back
  16. I got this off eBay. Mostly as a joke. Well they're here and making a stack on my desk. I got a bonus 8th one too! However I can't currently power them all. I don't have enough power cables. So I purchased these along with some 18awg wire (collectively the ATVs draw 0.4 amps from the wall). Going to create the most cursed power cable of all time. Probably going to make a rackmount shelf for them all too (that's why I got the C14 connector, for my PDU)
  17. Sorry for the late reply, It is always great to see someone appreciate and understand the value of that consol (any consol generally) and the specific model of PS3 specially there is one in Ottawa I believe Mosley technologies He is in exam period or something and will be available early May you can find him on google and his phone number but he won’t pick till May
  18. Good info. I have seen some ebay sellers specifically mention the RTL9210B, and I think that will be more than enough for my uses. There is only a small price premium for USB cases that do both protocols, so I am very happy.
  19. Yeha this looks fine. I'd get a basic 32GB RAM kit for $15 more (SP gaming or such). The brand on basic RAM doesn;t matter, just the specs. That way you'd never have to upgrade, no need to match kits in the future. you may also want wifi and bluetooth, the intel ax200 is aa chip you can pop int that motherboard for like $22 for WiFi 6 and BT 5.2.
  20. sub68

I wanted to get a couple rechargeable batteries…

Normal eneloops are great and iirc much cheaper.
  21. Sounds like they are working for you. However, I don't see them as a solution to any problem I have. Carrying a wallet and keys is such a non-issue, spending time and resources to solve that problem seems unnecessary to me. -kp
  22. So... only partially. Yes, with proxmox you could create some VM's, set up virtual routing and put torrent downloaders on their own subnet, but that isn't really the issue here. The issue here is downloading a file that is compromised and having a windows machine connected via SMB play that file and thus execute said malware, or have a windows PC on the main LAN (which wouldn't be firewalled off from the management surface of proxmox and thus all VM's under it in this example.....) become compromosed and then laterally move to your proxmox box which can then pwn truenas. Yes, your solution does provide more security than nothing at all, but it doesn't really fix the fact all of the management surfaces are on the main LAN, with all sorts of devices we don't trust. To do this "properly", you need your edge router to have a proper firewall, and do all vlan setups there. That way you can have a management subnet that proxmox, truenas WebUI, the firewall itself (pfsense is what I use), and whatever else as at that management level live on. Then you would set up subnets "below" that for things such as windows machines, phones, laptops, etc as well as an SMB share from truenas so your windows machines can still access SMB but restrict their ability to interface with the mangament subnet, then "next to that" I would have VM's for download clients etc, with similar rules as the windows and normal devices subnet.... then a subnet with next to 0 ability to talk to anything outside of that subnet for all IoT devices and things we really, truly, do not trust.
  23. Used Quadro P400 then, it's got NVENC support and can be had for ~$40-50 US on eBay. If you don't need anything gaming performance related, this is likely your best bet.
