I remember Asus' Remote GO application was also disabling UAC automatically without any nootifications when you are using this app to stream your desktop to your tablet. But it was fixed in the most recent update of AI Suite 3 after reporting about it to Asus.

Have you tried disabling the steam overlay? Someone reported a similar problem and it fixed it: http://www.reddit.com/r/Borderlands/comments/2ifd87/borderlands_2_text_screwed_up_on_linux/

Intel XTU or AIDA64 are good choices for stress testing your CPU while 3DMark (the demo version should be fine) is a good software to use to test your GPU.
