I've found it to be really helpful to have a search on the archlinux forums for your specific laptop. Often there will be a dedicated page for it and it will have all the glitches and bugs n stuff related to installing Linux on it. The wiki there is mainly for arch Linux but anything kernel and driver related shouldn't be distro specific. For example when setting up my xps 13 2015 the wiki page was insanely handy, it told me which kernel to use and which patches I needed to apply, as well as how to fix palm detection and get WiFi and bluetooth working Just, god damn its a good wiki! -

If you're only doing say "light gaming" on the laptop then pick a nice stable Linux distribution with a friendly looking desktop environment. My suggestion would be for you to have a look at Linux mint, super quick, really stable, easy to use and doesn't have a nasty unfamiliar interface

Now that Windows has become a malware platform for delivering ads, littered with cleverly named programs built for the purpose of harvesting our information, it's time that we make the hard decision that will ultimately decide the outcome of our rights to actually own or our own computers. It's time that we switch to Linux. We should not stand to have to agree to a terms of service to use our own computers, they're ours, not anyone else's!

1. Find out the UUID of the hard drive with 'sudo blkid' should look something like this: F88275C4827587C0 sudo echo 'UUID=*insert uuid here* /media/*insert directory here* ext3 defaults 0 0' >> /etc/fstab This'll make the hard drive mount automatically at boot. Find out more about fstab here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fstab 2. Try installing Steam with 'sudo apt-get install steam' that is if you're not doing it that way already.
