Planning SFF PC for data analysis and gaming
UselessBread replied to UselessBread's topic in New Builds and Planning
I know this is a somewhat dumb thing, but the budget is somewhat approximate as this computer isn't being built at a single point in time and I am not sure how much money I want to spare. I have more money available, but being fairly new to this whole day job thing don't know how big my (money) float should be. Anyhow, thank you for your time and responses. -

Alright, thanks. As the GPU thing isn't set in stone yet. Would 650W also be enough with a future AMD card build? I am in two minds about nvidia (they make good cards, but suck for Linux users) and might also go with an AMD card if they are performant enough. What about 3900X vs 3700X? I just remembered the 3900X exists and the four extra cores probably make a difference for some of my tasks. -

Thank you for the response. I forgot to mention that I want to avoid AIO water coolers. I have had bad experiences with them. Otherwise, I appreciate your suggestions. I did not think I could go that low wattage on the PSU. -
Abstract: My computer has been bothering me for quite some time now. I primarily use it for games and pet data projects. I would also like to use this computer for working from home again. I would appreciate some help in figuring out what to replace it with. Budget (including currency): Without case: ~1500€, somewhat flexible. Country: Germany Work workloads: Both my work and private projects generally feature large and high-dimensional data. My supervisor calls it "big data", but I don't like that phrase. The memory requirements are large-ish. I have access to my own 28-core 64GB memory VM instance, as well as a high-performance cluster for really annoying workloads. It would however be nice to be able to load and do some of the analyses locally. I thus think that at least 32GB of memory would be needed. Games workloads: Gaming is secondary to me, but still something I want from this machine. These are some of the games that would be nice to be able to run (which currently I cannot): Just Cause 3, Elite: Dangerous, Anno 1800. Improvements in some currently played games (Stellaris, Guild Wars 2, Cities: Skylines) would also be nice. There are also some future releases that are potentially interesting, like 2077. Other details: I am set on building this in an NCASE M1 (once they are available again, until then just use the current case). I have four monitors (1080p60) and I intend to use all of them (but only singles for games). Other peripherals exist. For dual-boot I would like to have two 1TB NVMe SSDs. I have NAS and thus don't need bulk storage in this computer. I work on GNU/Linux and play games on Windows Current machine: As mentioned before, this machine is annoying. Not surprising since it is basically an i5-3570k and GTX660Ti. I can't reuse the PSU (750W ATX, m1 takes the smaller ones), or the memory (16GB DDR3). I don't know about the cooler (Dark Rock 3). What I have been able to figure out: I was thinking that maybe I should go for a Ryzen 7 3800X build (might be fast enough? Ryzen 9 3900X looks nice too?). Like previously stated, ≥32GB of memory is a must, so are two 1TB NVMe SSDs. I was also thinking that the RTX3070 might be a good choice. I am willing to wait on GPUs to get a possibly better one than currently available ones. I also remember a lot of wayland compositors not working with nvidia proprietary drivers because nvidia. Might be something to keep in mind if AMD cards are good enough. Something along the lines of this would maybe work (unoptimized, missing GPU): PCPartPicker Part List Type Item Price CPU AMD Ryzen 7 3800X 3.9 GHz 8-Core Processor €307.99 @ Mindfactory CPU Cooler Noctua NH-U9S 46.44 CFM CPU Cooler €57.89 @ Alza Motherboard Asus ROG STRIX B550-I GAMING Mini ITX AM4 Motherboard €189.90 @ ARLT Memory Corsair Vengeance LPX 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-2666 CL16 Memory €99.90 @ Amazon Deutschland Storage Samsung 970 Evo 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive €134.89 @ Alza Storage Samsung 970 Evo 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive €134.89 @ Alza Power Supply Silverstone SFX 700 W 80+ Platinum Certified Fully Modular SFX Power Supply €149.89 @ Alza Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts Total €1075.35 Generated by PCPartPicker 2020-10-30 17:27 CET+0100 What are your thoughts?

I am fairly sure that "Related Channels" is not something that the Channel can choose, but rather is decided by some algorithm. The bit where you choose what is displayed is the "Featured Channels".

Maybe this is a case of double negatives, like two awfuls making a godly product.

Where to find old (Z77) motherboards
UselessBread replied to UselessBread's topic in CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory
I almost feared that would be the case. There is a total of 1 candidates on aliexpress for 219.99$ (wow). Unfortunately a newer board would also need a bunch of other new hardware I didn't want to buy (cpu, mem) -
installing the same software on 100 computers
UselessBread replied to Kodi4444's topic in Programs, Apps and Websites
You should probably verify that what you are downloading is what you want (use some kind of cryptographic signatures) because otherwise that sound like a security nightmare. Also including passwords in plain text files is a bad idea. You could probably create some kind of image with all the software that you need installed on it and then deploying that on your computers. Alternatively there was some powershell commandlet to install software from a repository or you could look into something like this: https://chocolatey.org/ -
Where to find old (Z77) motherboards

Switzerland and Germany at the moment. -
I am looking to buy an mITX Z77 motherboard. I am currently located in Central Europe (Germany mostly). Where can I find one? eBay is the obvious choice but rather limited (found 1) and a bit insanely priced (87+25€ wtf). None of the normal online retailers stock them anymore.

NAS build and/or HP Proliant microserver advice
UselessBread replied to UselessBread's topic in Servers, NAS, and Home Lab
Also, they run their own POS software, which I don't want to mess with. I just noticed that german pcpartpicker has actually become kind of useful. I'll try something there. Well, if I find enough money to go balls to the walls: https://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/DG6Wqk with RAIDZ2 that would be 18TB of storage. A bit overkill if you ask me. Don't think I am willing to spend that much. -
NAS build and/or HP Proliant microserver advice
UselessBread replied to UselessBread's topic in Servers, NAS, and Home Lab
Apologies accepted. Frankly, the site is a bit shite about it's infos. I have a lot of POS 3TB Barracudas which are probably about to fail, and can't be used for this (They actually have the data on them). I would either be buying 4x4TB or 4x3TB to plop into a NAS (and a NAS of course). -
NAS build and/or HP Proliant microserver advice
UselessBread replied to UselessBread's topic in Servers, NAS, and Home Lab
This doesn't make any sense. Why would HP make an enterprise device with 4 hard drive bays and not enough power to power four hard drives? WD lists it's red drives at <2A spin up (~24W) and ~10W while i/o, this would give less than 100W for spinning up, and ~40W while all are spinning. I have no idea how you think that it would only be able to power "maybe 1 internal drive". My budget doesn't really exist per-se, it is just as cheap as possible (<1000€ including drives would be marvelous). -
I am looking to moving my data from a cluster of random Barracudas to a NAS. (Not a high performance NAS, more of an on-line archive thing, don't worry, I'll be getting proper backups too at some point) Looking at hardware I found this: https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B013UBCHVU/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A3JWKAKR8XB7XF&psc=1 Now I am a bit confused by this, HP's site lists these for a lot more. Would this be a good idea? I doubt that I can find anything cheaper to do the job. Can I install my own flavour of GNU/Linux on it? I have about 6.6TB of data right now, and it is continually growing, so I thought a RAIDZ1 with 4x3TB would give enough space for the forseeable future (9TB), and when I need more, I can swap in bigger drives. TL;DR: Is the linked product good for a 4x3TB RAIDZ1 thing?
