Beyerdynamic DT 770 250, 80, or 32

Michael McAllister

I've been doing a lot of research regarding these headphones.  Currently, I'm enjoying my Sennheiser HD-280 Pro headphones, but I may want to upgrade down the line.  I understand that lower impedance headphones are generally easier to drive and thus have a higher maximum volume.

Has anyone here had the opportunity to test the differences in audio fidelity between these three impedance levels?  Do they sound pretty much the same regardless?  I'm probably going to buy a Fiio E10 eventually regardless of what headphones I decided to get or if I decide to use my current cans for a little bit longer.  The fact that the E10 will drive a wide range of headphones properly is very appealing.

32 ohm is bad, if you plan on getting an amp, get the 250 ohm.

What are the differences in fidelity between the 80 ohms and the 250?  Unfortunately I do not have a local audio shop otherwise I could go in and compare them.  I've also heard that higher impedance does not necessarily equate to higher-quality audio, so that is the reason why I'm asking.

Not that much, it's slightly better.

The 32 ohm version is generally regarded as being worse than the others, but note it is not inherently because of the impedance itself. Differences between the versions are minor at best.

Do you have experience with the Fiio E10?  Some Amazon reviewers have indicated the amp hisses and pops using the high gain setting at higher volumes.

E10's have defective batches just like any other cheaply-produced product. Mine is flawless.

  • 3 weeks later...
Got my new pair of headphones today.  They're extremely comfortable compared to my Sennheiser HD-280 Pros.  I haven't had any problems with discomfort from sideways pressure.

Sound quality so far is good, but I wouldn't consider it a night and day difference.  Vocals are recessed somewhat.  On certain songs, playing at loud volume, I noticed a little bit of distortion.  I don't know if that's just a sign of my onboard struggling.  I intend to get a proper headphone amplifier sometime in the future.  Was there a break-in period for these headphones?  On my Sennheisers, at around 40 or so was pretty loud.  With these headphones, I would consider loudness to be around 70 or so.  For those that are curious, I've been using 256 kbps AAC tracks from iTunes when testing these.

Unfortunately, I don't have several headphones to properly compare with, so this is a short summation of my thoughts rather than a proper review.  :(

That's pretty good for new. I got mine for $120 and free shipping but it was used. With the left-over money, I bought black earpads because they look better and stuff to mod my headphones. I havn't gotten around to modding them yet because I got super lazy and taking ridiculous classes this semester. You probably won't see me on the forum as much as during winter break. I'll pop here and there but I don't have much time anymore.

Did you notice the same thing with the vocals, or is this just a matter of needing a proper amp?  It's really not that big of a deal on a lot of the newer songs, but some of the older stuff like AC/DC seems to have this issue, so it may just be an issue with how the song was mixed.

Even straight from iTunes, it might not be the best quality compression, especially if it's an album which predates iTunes.

That might be the issue then.  Thanks.  I probably would have gotten the 80 ohm version, but Amazon did not have them.  Ebay usually takes forever, so I don't really like shopping there to be honest.

Nah, it' just the headphones.

See the graph.

Most of beyer's headphones have a slight dip in the mids, some people like it (I do) some people don't. @EmoRarity loves his mids, he can recommend headphones that focus in that region. So far, the K612's have one of the best vocal responses I've heard in a sub $200 headphone.

noice, sounds like the 892 (whilst not the best option) is an adequate intermediary source for 250ohm headphones.  :)

Mine does not but it could be just because I listen to jpop so their vocals are higher than on american or europe songs.

For the most part, it's not a big issue.  Most of the newer songs don't seem to recess the vocals that much.  The fact that it is somewhat recessed does seem to be helpful in that it actually makes for a more comfortable experience.  Some songs just seem more vocally recessed than others.

Sounds like I need to get me some high-impedance headphones soon to test that out (I also have the 892)

Can't recommend the plural there of because I have found only one headphone that got it right. Because other headphones with great mids, like my 1540's, have a fantastic bass response and a well timed treble roll off. Or the 1R, which the treble overshadowed the low end, but great mids.

Which leads me to the headphone I feel has the best mids.....7506! $80, so its well under budget.

Are you suggesting that an $80 pair of headphones sounds better than ones that cost twice as much?
