These ones can / could run stable between 1100 and 1200Mhz which is really good for 800Mhz rated ram, of course the timings would suffer tho and you needed a pretty high voltage. :P

Is that why high end ram has heatsinks. Even when massive ram overclocking in current ram isn't worth for the yield?

Yeah downvolting them on stock speeds was easy.

I had the same board with a X2 6000+, getting a 100Mhz OC going was near impossible which was a shame but no surprise as the CPU wasn't known for it's OC potential.

I can't overclock at all. Like, I can change the settings in the BIOS, but they never actually apply.

I still should have a 73GB Raptor somewhere as well.

That VelociRaptor reminded me of the Raptor X with a window in them and me really wanting one at the time but I never got it as they were simply too expensive for what you got.

Just a note, those PCI devices are actually AGP. But AGP is based on PCI.

Well, just the graphics cards, I spent too long organizing the images and just shoved the graphics cards into the PCI section. I just now edited it to include AGP as a specified type of peripheral

And here's my ghetto little creation. A tiny heatsink on a Q6600 running on a board that doesn't even support it. The heatsink, screws, and fan are all from different heatsinks, so none of them fit together. :P

  • 1 year later...

After thinking a little bit about the age of my own system, I started to wonder what other experiences people have had with their computers/components that simply won't die, or simply won't stop being awesome despite their age.

For context, my PC is on the X58 platform and is rocking 3x4GB of DDR3 in triple channel and an i7-980X overclocked to 4.0 GHz. As with my Q6600 + SLI 8800 GT rig before it, I expected this computer to start falling behind a year or two after its birth, but graphics card aside, it hasn't. The 980X, a seven-year-old CPU, continues to be faithful to this day. Cities: Skylines runs great and Doom never seems to drop below 120 fps. The GTX 1070 is allowed to reach max GPU usage and the CPU barely breaks a sweat. If Ryzen doesn't provide a big upgrade at a decent price, this computer will continue to live on for the years to come assuming nothing breaks.

I couldn't be happier with this thing, to the point where I have an emotional attachment to it and the level of performance it provides after all these years. I've had it for so long (since early 2010), I don't want to see it go when the time comes!

So yeah, do any of you folks have any old, reliable hardware you've fallen in love with over the years?

Current Build:

CPU: Ryzen 7 5800X3D

GPU: RTX 3080 Ti FE

RAM: 32GB G.Skill Trident Z CL16 3200 MHz

Mobo: Asus Tuf X570 Plus Wifi

CPU Cooler: NZXT Kraken X53

I'll probably feel that way with my i7 4790K & 1070 today, but I found the Q6600 (at stock speeds) to be way too slow, and got pretty toasty on my Zalman at 3.2Ghz.  a GTX 660 could bottleneck the stock chip.

For the Best builds and Price lists here is a world where many points of the price have been predefined already for your convenience!

The Xeon E3 1231 V3 IS BETTER Than the Core i5 4690K and a Significantly better value for the non-overclockers or value shoppers.

The OS is like a kind food, Try it before saying if you like it or don't.

My own rig is an i7 2600 which was built 6 years ago and its still going strong, I've had my share of GPU upgrades going from
6870>6970CF>7970>R9 290 (btw I actually only bought the 6870 and r9 290, the rest of the upgrades have been hand downs from friends and family pretty luck eh?)

It still running strong, modern games run as they're intended and video rendering is a dream and rarely breaks down, in fact nothing has gone wrong in the computer.

I'm going to build a completely new desktop soon once ryzen is released into the market. not because I think my computer is slow but because its enormous and I'd like a mini-itx system now to get a little more desk space.

But I have a 12" PowerBook G4 from 2004 that still runs.  I have TenFourFox on it.

Currently focusing on my video game collection.

Woo! An excuse to gush about old shit I have that no one else cares about!!! :D:D:D

Back in 2013 I was given a Acer PC with integrated graphics, 2GB of RAM and a C2D. It's grown to a Core 2 Quad, 8GB, GTX670, custom case, SSD machine. It kicks ass (considering what it once was) and never has any issues. Love the damn thing! It now faithfully serves as my HTPC. I also have a Athlon 64 x2 939 rig which is like my prized possession. I built back when I knew absolutely ZERO about PCs and I cringe when I think about the horrible things I did. I used carpet as a test bench when building it and left the case open with the case on its side all the time. I pulled my cat outta there a few times even.. But it still lives, and It still works great for Youtube watching and forum browsing. And don't even get me started about my Optiplex GX110... But yeah I'm a PC hoarder. For some reason I just love trying to trick out older systems and put them up against things they were never intended to do. With all the money I've spent on older PCs, I could probably have SLI 1080s by now. But that's boring! :D And besides, it gives me systems to pass down to other family members.

I've had shitty systems that didn't last long for whatever reasons, but then I've had amazing systems like these that just don't die.

i7 2600k @ 5GHz 1.49v - EVGA GTX 1070 ACX 3.0 - 16GB DDR3 2000MHz Corsair Vengence

Asus p8z77-v lk - 480GB Samsung 870 EVO w/ W10 LTSC - 2x1TB HDD storage - 240GB SATA SSD w/ W7 - EVGA 650w 80+G G2

3x 1080p 60hz Viewsonic LCDs, 1 glorious Dell CRT running at anywhere from 60hz to 120hz

Can't count the pc's i've had. first one was a AMD K6 running 400mhz with about 16mb of ram. Obviously it no longer runs but I still have the CPU. Today I run a 5960x and even though it has cost me 1100€, I guess it will be futureproof for a long time, given that the rest of my pc keeps it together. Apart from the graphics card that is.
