Quadro or geforce?

Go to solution Solved by BenDreadful,

Ignore everyone saying amd is better than nvidia, the fact that they don't specify the model, series or anything about the cards should tell you to not take them seriously.

About quadro vs geforce, geforce is a clear winner. The work units made for gpu's are targeted at mainstream cards. In other words, it's better for the team working on work units to optimize them for cheaper, more mainstream cards than anything else. 1000 people folding on geforce cards beats 10 people folding on quadro cards.

For F@H would it be better to buy a ~$1000 Geforce card (titan) or a ~$1000 Quadro card (k4000 i believe.)?

This question is THEORETICAL I don't plan on buying either, or any AMD/NVIDIA card for folding!

QUADROS ARE THE BEST WITH 20000000 MORE FPS THAN GEFORCE! THATS WHY THEY COST MORE!

But seriously for folding AMD is much better.

Isn't the 780 ti faster than the Titan in all circumstances?

Not in double precision calculations, but it don't think folding does that?

Again, only a theoretical question as to whether quadro had an advantage at folding over geforce.

Quadro is good for specialised apps like Maya, 3DSmax, solidworks... as those require special drivers. Folding does not AFAIK.

Therefore you want pure muscle- the Titan.

Can I ask you both where did you get that from? Any links or sources?

They just are. Folding and such are optimised for OpenCL.

Any comparisons between Nvidia/AMD? If F@H is suddenly better on AMD then that's relatively new, AMD used to be complete garbage for folding. I think I read Core17 made AMD a little better or at the same level as Nvidia, but not much better. I wish I could find some updated charts on it but I'm not having any luck.

AFAIK it does have CUDA support because when I ran it the terminal searched for CUDA cores.

Just to chime in - NO - AMD is NOT better then NVidia for Folding - both have pros and cons.

Disregarding all the junk with previous cores, Core17 made them pretty much equal. Some people will argue that the higher PPD on some AMD cards versus NVidia makes them better. Others will argue the better power utilization on some NVidia versus AMD cads make them better. Which one is noisier?

Kinda like comparing an apple to an orange. Which one is better? Umm... they are both fruit? :)

In gaming and such we rely typically on pure FPS to declare the "better" card - but in Folding you have to take into account more variables. PPD/Watt versus PPD/$$$ and then tie in heat output, efficiency, etc, what is important to you, etc.

RAW PPD - well kids, the truth is AMD and NVidia both lose - 4P rules! :D

FYI - my 780 can average 180K PPD - yes, that high. That pretty much beats anything AMD can put out. But, mine is watercooled and I manage to keep it at 38C - I do variable OC'ing based on core to maximize output. Is NVidia better then AMD? No... but in my case, maybe....
