PSU Airflow Direction [Poll]

Hey guys,

i just watched TTL's video review about the PC Specialist Vanquish System where he said that mounting the psu so that it takes fresh air from outside the case is the "more mainstream way, the way people not massiv enthusiasts would it expect to be", whereas the other way around, taking air from inside the case (stealing it from the gpu) is the way he "as an enthusiast" would do it.

Now i ask myself, how have you mounted your psu and why?

I personally have it the "mainstream way" because i thing its best for the other components (mostly the gpu) because it steals the fresh air from the gpu and/or takes the already heated up air from the gpu.

I have mine set to where it takes hot air from inside the case.

This was my decision because I wanted more exhaust fans. To better balance the pressure (it's still positive, just less positive).

My 290X reference cooler does just fine regardless.

PSU's getting hot isn't really a concern unless you are testing it's limits. I'm not (by about 250w) so I don't care.

Having the PSU pull it from outside the case is fine for when you are pushing it's limits (so it needs to actual be cooled off), and so that it doesn't mess with GPUs that need the air (crossfire/sli).

I prefer it to draw air from outside the case but I still have yet to see my seasonic 750w psu fan spin even under full load, for the past 2 years now so cooling it is not a problem anyway. Fan facing down will avoid dust to settle into the psu through the fan grill (those fine dust) and also minimize the chances of any screw or foreign object falling it the psu. Also I prefer clean look with fan facing down.

I always wonder if the two fans competing for air could create issues? Videocard an bottom exhausting psu.

Does having top and bottom exhausts disrupt airflow negatively? This scenario assumes at least a rear fan.

I use fresh air.

PSU fan up. looks better imo and it doesn't really make any difference anyway

I mounted my power supply by taking air from inside the case as it was overheating when I did it the other way around. By facing it up, my gpu can draw fresh air through my power supply by intaking from the power supply holes and it helps cool my power supply.

  • 2 weeks later...

I'd normally put fan down as the PSU will be cooler, unless the case does not allow for it or the PSU will be in a dusty condition, then I would go fan up.
