XzzDSA's 2014 Build Plans

XzzDSA

Hey Techies!

So, for 2014 with Maxwell from nVidia and Broadwell from Intel (supposedly), I will build a new rig right for all of the new tasty parts! In about 6 months time I'm thinking will be the right time for this.

So before I start, let me tell you something about my current rig:

Components list:

  • CPU
    Intel i7 930 2.8Ghz

  • Motherboard
    Asus Rampage III Extreme

  • RAM
    Corsair Dominator GT 2000Mhz 3x2GB

  • GPU
    Asus 5870 Matrix P

  • Case
    Corsair 600T

  • Storage
    OCZ Vertex 4 256GB + WD Green 1TB

  • PSU
    Corsair TX650 80+ Bronze (650 Watts)

  • Soundcard
    Onboard Audio

  • Cooling
    Corsair Hydro H50 (Closed Loop)

So as you might Imagine, I start feeling the age of this beast, hence I want to build a new one.
For as long as I can remember, I've had troubles with drivers on the AMD side, so for my new rig I WILL be getting nVidia... Now actually the reason for this is mostly just curiosity, I want to see how it's like on the other side, the green one.

Now for the future:
Now for what you are actually here to read/watch! :)

Theme/Color scheme:

Theme is TBD, but I'm really intrigued by the idea of a golden build, I'm yet to see a proper good looking "golden" build. Many have decent ones, but not really great ones.

So I HOPE I can do something along those lines of a great "golden" build with this, BUT as stated, this is TBD and might end up with another color scheme.

Budget:

I'm doing this in heaps because it is ALOT of money, especially for a student like me.

3.000$ + 1.500$ (Total of 4.500$).

1st. heap: I will be getting all of the juicy hardware at once for around 3.000$ which is gonna make up the actual rig... This way I can get a functional machine up and running until I'm ready to spend more money on puffing it up.

2nd. heap: This time around I will be spending around 1.200$ on all of the watercooling equipment. Time to spice this baby up :)

Other: This is where I spend 300$ on small cool things and stuff I forget :D

I'm planning on spending a total of around 4500$... You might be wondoring why I spend so much yet get so "little".

Well, I live in Europe, more importanly Denmark, and prices are non comparable to US ones.. As an example, the 780 and r9 290x was the exact same price before the price drop from nvidia.

Even though there was a 100$ difference in the US at the same time, so bare that in mind!

(Soo... Christmas happened, aaaaaaand I'm broke. I need to get crackin' gettin some money together for this build. I WILL do it in bursts.. Get the most important hardware first, to get it up and running. Then ram, and so on. We'll see how it goes in the spring!).

Components list:

The list shown here is a temporary list, and mostly a place holder... I use it to predict the prices of the tier of components I'm going to use.

These prices are taken from the online Danish retailers at which I plan to buy most of my parts.

"Non-bold" = Hardware carried over

"Bold" = New hardware

Also, I need to name it, sooooooo :P

Thank you for your interrest!

I'm looking forward to DDR4, and was kinda hoping I could fit it into this build.. So far, that is proberly not going to happen, as the first consumer chipset to support it seems to be the next haswell-e processor chipset. What do you think?

I have been thinking about my sound setup alot lately.. For the future I plan for a proper external audio setup, though for now I like having sound inside of my rig as I move it fearly often between locations. But just for the internal card, I'm getting quite the upgrade for quality :)

Updated case decision. I proberly won't buy the Entho Primo. There's something about the front and top that makes it look cheap because of the little plastic that's been used. A nice case, but unfortunately this ruins it for me.

So I'm back at looking on the Temjin TJ11.. There's two problems that I've got with this case though.. 1. It's really expensive, but that's not new. 2. Silverstone will release another "king" case next year... Seeing as the TJ07 is still popular even though it's from 2005, this might not be any problem, but it would be kind of sad to see a new case that might be cheaper and better (proberly not cheaper). That I would've rather want.. We'll see when that time comes though.

On another note, I'm ATM looking for a job, so with a little bit of luck i will be able to get together enough for my plans, within a time period that's acceptable.

So a little while back, I posted a topic as I was looking for a 3D model of the Silverstone Temjin TJ11 case. I had no luck in finding any online, and none could provide me with one. I asked quite a few on numerous topics, but yet again, no luck.

So about a month back, I got an interesting message on here, a new user who apparently saw my old topic and created an account to send me his own work.

Here's a render of his 3D model of the case:

Ln44SIX.jpg

He's got a profile on Grabcad.com where he uploads his work, you should take a look: https://grabcad.com/ewashbrook-1

As I posted yestoday. I am still not sure on the case, but as soon as I am and given that I use this case. I will be using his 3d model to plan out my build. This will be much of a learn by doing other than anything else as what little I've been doing of 3D work has been very simple, school work basically.

On any note, I'm looking forward to this!

I've found a used TJ11 for under half the price of a new one. I've started a topic over here: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/135206-used-silverstone-tj11-is-the-price-right/#entry1806981

So I've bought the Used TJ11..

It's one year old and according to the seller, in perfect condition.

It's missing all of the fans, 120's and 180's though...
The 120's I was going to get rid of anyway, but I've bought a new pair of Silverstone 181's to go with the ducts in the case.

All in all a supposedly fine buy at about 450$ with the 181's.

So that's the start of this journey.. I've been looking at my watercooling plan lately, and right now I'm thinking of going with Bitspower Black Sparkle fittings to go with some solid tubing where visible.
As I've mentioned, I'd love to make a golden themed build. I'm still planning for this, and hope this will be possible with the black sparkle fittings.
I can't figure out if what color my coolant should be.. I'd proberly keep it clear, especially to be able to see the gold in the CPU block.

But yeah, these are just some thoughts and an update. Whenever I get some new hardware in the summer, I'll start a build / upgrade log. I will be an ongoing log, and will have no deadline.

So the seller didn't have the original case. If you are not aware, this is not the origianal case. . . LOL

So after a tough fight with the duct tape. I had to bring in reinforcements, a kitchin knife...

SO here it finaly is, along side my current rig... It is bigger than I expected.... (That's what she said... I know...)

I was kind of hoping to get my current rig in it.. But I really can't because of the missing 181's... But as soon as I've got them home, I'll transfere over and do the yearly Windows install that we all love so much \o/

I only got the Matrix card because it was HEAVILY discounted.. like 60% :P

The closed matrix cards was never THAT good.. But the open designs I've heard lots of good stuff about. I'll proberly not get another matrix though, too much money for too little extra :/

Also I'm waiting for the 800 series (plus I need money :P)

The box looked like crap but looks like it was padded nicely as the case looks intact! If you have issues building it I could take it off your hands :P

I roll with sigs off so I have no idea what you're advertising.

This is NOT the signature you are looking for.

Just a thought on the motherboard/sound card combo.  The Maximus VI Formula has an excellent on board sound solution, not quite to what your card of choice is but very close and is a better overall motherboard than the pro, with the ability to water cool the VRM when you build your loop and it is much sexier.  You will probably save a little money getting this board and no sound card instead of the option above and end up with a better looking system.
