Do you think consoles will be obsolete in 5-8 years?

With mobile chips becoming more and more powerful, do you think the days of gaming consoles are coming to an end? With chips like the soon to be released Tegra 6, the graphics performances said to rival that of the Playstation 3.

 

Personally, I think that within a couple of years, you'll have more power in your hands that you can take anywhere and plug into a TV. More than likely, people will choose to have a portable system over a big box.

Yes, consoles will be obsolete in 5-8 years (they are obsolete now), but no, it won't be the smaller, mobile, processors that kill them.

I think Cloud Gaming will be the final death blow to consoles. 

Internet sucks around the world now, but that won't be true forever. Give it a decade.

I believe,that when console gamers realize that their gaming experience is not getting any better and their graphics get old in the first 6 months the consoles are released, things will start to change and consoles will gradually die out.

Consoles have nothing to compete with PCs. Also, a 500 $ PC can easily outperform next gen consoles.

It's either 720p at 60FPS or 1080p at 30FPS. AND THE CONSOLES HAVENT EVEN LAUNCHED.

I presume 4-5 years maximum.

I also foresee steam box getting a competitor.

They are already mostly obsolete right now.

A similar priced PC can easily out perform both the new consoles.

This will be the last console generation (as in a dedicated box next to your tv)

Consoles wont die. They will just change form and what they do. For example N64 pretty much only played games, PS2 could play DVD's, PS3 can stream video from the internet and now the next gen is going to have video calling.

For dedicated purist gamers they may be more interested in PC, but consoles are still going to be a thing you can go out and buy, slap down in front of your TV and just blob out with.

No, but they will take another form.

Consoles such as the Playstation and the Xbox will basically be high end laptops with their own custom OS. (in other words they will have better graphics etc every generation but a desktop will always be better)

 

On the other hand, consoles such as nintendo branded ones will continue to have graphics that are inferior to xbox/ playstation because of the art style of the games and the target audience of the consoles.

 

I'd also give it another 10 or more years until some consoles are no longer physical pieces of hardware. And in that time era, the console will be an 'app' that you launch from your TV.

XBOX says mantle won't be allowed on its console. It's sort of DoA.

Consoles will become obsolete the same way that separate cpus and motherboards will become obsolete, the same way OC'ing will become obsolete and the same way radiowave tv is becoming obsolete.  

 

Consoles will probably die when the PC dies.  That is, when a house has one computer (more like a server) and everything is connected to it is, when we won't see people buying a device purely for their tv. 

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.

I personally don't enjoy 9-string guitars, but that doesn't change the fact that they look awesome as hell!

we will still have terminals, they won't have many computing parts, In fact they'll be very similar to dumb terminals from early mainframe systems, however it will feel like a pc does today. only faster  with 100% redundancy on all parts.
