Wow those are really good temps, were the fans at 100% ? My top 280 runs really warm when i stress them, and i cant get them to OC very well.

Its Asus and AMD they have never played well together for cooling.

I think it's more the raw amount of heat the 7970kicks out more so

Nah its the Cooler not the heat the 7970 puts out, the 290x Matrix would actually throttle it you try to put any type of overclock on it. I've got a friend with one thats air cooled. He was disappointed with the fact that it still is hitting 85-90C with the factory speeds.

Interesting from what I've heard the older Asus triple slot coolers they are pretty good

that's fairly accurate. the 290 barely pulls more power than a 7970, yet performs 40-50% better.

and because proof is always a good thing:

The Coolers that Asus uses on their version of AMD cards are pretty much a slap and stick from the Nvidia line of their cards. So there is never proper contact.

The graph i linked was just the reference AMD cooler... but yeah I agree about Asus coolers. they're not designed to cool small surface areas. And... I'll stop there, completely wrong thread for this discussion.

You need to add the Video card to your post. Valley only lists it as a R9 200 series card.

That said, how much time have you spent on that OC? My 980 Strix yielded 78FPS and a score of 3264, 1080 Extreme.

Although that was with a 1550MHz Core and 1898MHz Mem

From that min framerate it looks like you had quite a good stutter during the benchmark.

Did you notice any of that when the benchmark was running?

Yeah there's the problem. Try without the backround programs. If it still doesnt make it through without issue, you may have to dial in that OC a bit.

So im not very happy with my 280 Crossfire setup, very buggy and very hot. Ive been thinking of getting either a 290X Lightning or a 970 (and SLI in the future). They are around the same price.

Any suggestions?
