But why? Nvidia launches GT 710 Graphics Card

Nvidia has quietly released their GT 710 graphics card.

TnQRX6v.gif

Why, you may ask? This ultra-low end offering obviously cannot have any application in the modern PC market, yet Nvidia says different, claiming that the GT 710 still outperforms 80% of iGPUs - Contrasting Intel's statement that the new Iris Pro outperforms 80% of dGPUs.

Specs:

Coming to the specifications, NVIDIA’s GeForce GT 710 is based on the older Kepler architecture. It uses the GK208 graphics core which is a revised version of the GK108 graphics core and has 192 CUDA cores in total which means only 1 SMX is found on the graphics chip (Kepler has 192 CC per SM compared to 128 CC per SM on Maxwell). The chip is clocked at 954 MHz though that may differ with AIB specific models. The card pack up to 2 GB of DDR3 memory that is clocked at 1.8 Gbps and runs along a 64-bit bus interface. The card pumps out a bandwidth of 14.4 GB/s. The GeForce GT 710 is a low end graphics card and maintains a 19W TDP. Display outputs include HDMI, Dual Link DVI-D and VGA ports. The card will be available in several form factors that include single slot, single slot (low-profile) and dual-slot models.

It is priced at $30 for the 1 GB model and $40 for the 2 GB model.

Nonetheless, the points made in the recent LTT video "Low End Video Cards Rant - Are they still terrible?", which was released to Vessel 6 days ago, still hold true. That video will go out on YouTube sometime late tomorrow night, and it has perfect timing. There will be no market for this card apart from the misinformed.

Talk about wasted money. Everything I can think of worth that amount of money is money better spent.

And there is the answer to your question.

I have a low end card in an htpc of mine. It supports 4k, and it is capable of smooth playback.

Just like a iGPU from Intel...

huh... only 30 dollars? thats actually good tho. The biggest problem was the cards being like 60 dollars. but for 30 its a great tool for more hdmi ports

With this in mind, I'm tempted to feel like the only reason this card exists is to fuel this beef.

Yeah. i think the only place these have is an inexpensive upgrade for an HTPC for 4K playback.

I agree actually, for $30 brand new it's not a bad choice for upgrading an older rig to play less demanding games like League of Legends, as I'm pretty sure a cheap retired Core 2 Duo system + one of these would be up to the task.

These are not the cards they were ranting about in that video. They were ranting about cards in the $80-$100 category, saying that you should either spend a bit more on a decent GPU, or go for a super cheap one like this if all you need is outputs.

If it had a 4K capable output, it might actually have a place.

it does tho

It's HDMI 1.4a though, so 4K is only at 30Hz.

Ah, didn't see the tiny writing at the bottom of Nvidia's product page. Supports 4096x2160 at 24Hz and UHD at 30Hz.

I guess it does have a place in something like a Xeon workstation.

I do not believe a 2500 supports 4k 60hz though.

Pst, a GTX 650ti 2GB is a better choice and won't bottleneck on Core 2 Duo systems.
