Deep Blue- the 1440p game crusher and workstation

afyeung

2015 was a heck of a year. I switched between 2 platforms, AM3+ and X99, and went through more GPUs than I could keep count of(probably around 10 actually), 3 mobos, 5 cases, and 3 PSUs. All of this for the ultimate price to performance gaming/workstation PC. Price to performance is mainly in terms of parts, I splurged a bit on my case and accessories.

Here's the complete parts list:

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/Pm7zqs

Total was a bit under $1400. My main scores were 5820k+MoBo for $450, R9 390x for $150, Liquid cooled 290 for $175, and 240mm liquid cooler for $50. I got these low prices by monitoring Micro Center and Slick Deals a lot. My 390x was sent to me brand new from MSI after I got a DOA 290 for $143. The prices were great, but I spent a lot of time dealing with several issues.

-My first PSU was DOA, got it resolved by EVGA really quickly

-Throttling 390x, had to mod it with dual 120mm's(looks really nice though).

-Super hot 290 VRM's (120c), stuck on several copper heatsinks and a 80mm fan

I spent basically all of last summer tinkering and going to Micro Center. At first, 1 GPU worked very nicely, however, I really wanted the smoothness of 60fps without sacrificing image quality at 1440p. This called for more than what 1 OC'ed 290 could offer. I actually could have gotten a 980Ti and called it a day at one point, but I decided to give AMD a chance. The journey would have been MUCH easier with the 980Ti, but I wouldn't have learned nearly as much. I still have to do performance numbers and see whether modding the 390x was successful. Updates are soon to come to stay tuned! :) I tried to stick with a blue, white, and black theme which turned out nicely.  Now for the finished build pictures:

I rate 10/10.

Thanks man. At least you didn't rate 5/7 "perfect score" lol. I know the cable management on the back isn't as pretty as I would like it to be, but there was a ton more cables to deal with than your standard PC because of the mods and such.

I've had the same PC for nearly twenty years.

It's had ten new motherboards, fifteen new CPUs, thirty GPUs and eight cases.

How many special people change?
How many lives are livin' strange?
Where were you while we were getting high?
