The old slot pentium 2 cpu, Intel also had them for the celeron, pentium 3 and pentium 3 xeons. Celeron, Pentium 2, and Pentium 3 runs on slot 1. Pentium 2 and 3 Xeons runs on slot 2, which supporta dual cpus. The key notch is placed at different positions so they are not compatible with each other.

AMD also had a slot cpu for its K7, which runs in slot A.

@LinusTech Maybe the Steam success of the GTX970 it was a consequence of some recent facts:

- budget and first to be market as 'GeForce GTX VR Ready'

- DirectX12 support in Nvidia 900 series

- ability to use better new screens at 4K, or the newer 165 Hz thing (like you referred: https://youtu.be/b3ImK3WMBm4?t=4m46s )

- it's the latest architecture

Maybe the sum of all this have put her into this result, not only the usual marketing by nvidia.
