AMD - AM4 Socket is confirmed for upcoming Zen CPUs and APUs - CES 2016

kameshss
AMD today officially announced the AM4 socket for the upcoming Summit Ridge and Bristol Ridge family of Zen-Based APUs and CPUs.

This confirms the rumors over the past year that Bristol Ridge and Summit Ridge products will indeed be using a unified platform with the AM4 socket!

The current AMD's platform has 3 different sockets like AM3+. FM2+, AM1 (entry level).

amd-am4-platform.jpg

AMD’s new high-performance desktop processor is code-named “Summit Ridge” is a full SoC and will feature up to eight ‘Zen’ cores, 4MB L2 cache, 8MB of L3 cache, a dual-channel DDR4/DDR3 memory controller, a PCI Express 3.0 controller and more. Bristol Ridge will be the company’s new high-end APU SoCs for 2016 that will feature up to four ‘Zen’ cores, DDR4 memory support and more.

And then there is little news about A10, they've launched A10-7890K. k.

The A10-7890K is essentially just a speed bump. It uses the same micro-architecture and core configuration (4 CPU + 8 GPU) as current-gen, top of the line A10 APUs, but kicks the max turbo frequency up to 4.3GHz. The current A10-7870K tops out at 4.1GHz. Like previous K-SKUs, the A10-7890K’s CPU and GPU are unlocked for easy overclocking.

I'm no expert in this, but are there issues with memory controllers that support both (full sized, not the L skew) DDR3 and DDR4?

I wonder if ram overclocking headroom is lowered because of this?

To my knowledge there arent any chipsets from intel/amd that support both (full size) DDR3 and DDR4.

We'll have to see how this goes for AMD. imo zen is their last resort/only hope, otherwise they will just loose more and more money, and more market. imo, once again

I like the unified platform.  Hopefully they do this all right and can compete against both Intel and nVidia, but I still remain without enthusiasm.  It'll either WOW me because I am not hyped, or it'll be an indifferent deal.

Skylake has full support for DDR3 (non-L).

There are even a few Z170 boards that support DDR3.

This sounds wrong. Bristol Ridge is supposed to be Carrizo for desktop with Excavator cores. Raven Ridge is the APU with Zen cores launching in 2017.

Because of that.

Imho they should just adopt intels mechanism simply because its good and very universal.

It works perfectly fine, however, I've not seen a stock one in years as every build I've done, I've fitted a custom cooler... sooooo yeah. Stock coolers are crap.

How is it not universal? lol and the mechanism on intel is to hold the cpu in the very delicate socket because intel cheaped out on the pins.

Not even only amd stock cooler but also smaller aftermarket.

Using the stock mech? Answer is don't use the stock mount, use an aftermarket one like everyone who buys intel does cos their stock cooler is shit too.

Gotta admit I disagree with comments about the mounting system, the AMD one is far more sturdy and has a backplate, lasts for more re-uses and doesn't have issues with the push mechanism going brittle or just snapping because it's pretty flimsy.

The fact that they claim it will have 8mb of L3 cache makes me think the 8 core skews will be aimed at the desktop market - which means if the cores are as fast as intel's or close we might finally be getting 8 core cpus on the desktop at acceptable prices and without significant compromises elsewhere. Fingers crossed.

We'll have to see how this goes for AMD. imo zen is their last resort/only hope, otherwise they will just loose more and more money, and more market. imo, once again

lga 1151 supports it too, what matters there is the chipset more than the socket itself.

TIL right there ^

Guess I was wrong lmao. Thanks for the info

I think it's a limitation of the motherboards we currently have.

1151? no.

but 1151 has support for DDR4 and DDR3. Not both in same board. I mean there are no boards with DDR3 and DDR4 at same time.
