A group of hackers shows off a PS4 running (tweaked) Linux

As one of the 'Lightning talks' of this years Chaos Communication Congress, Fail0verflow group showed a demo of them making a PS4 boot Linux and run a PS1 Gameboy Advance version of a Pokemon game.

Things aren't as straightforward as finding an exploit to load the kernel, however. As the video shows, PS4's semi-custom architecture has required them to alter over 7000 lines in the kernel to get most of the subsystems to work, with GPU 3D acceleration and USB functionality still a work in progress.

The video promises an imminent release of the kernel patches, but tells people to 'bring their own exploit' suggesting the one they used to bypass PS4's locked bootloader won't be released (this article has some speculation on what exactly it was).

 

All very neat IMHO and you don't have to feel too bad for Sony as they're supposedly not selling this generation of Play Stations at a loss, but merely at cost.

Update: 3D acceleration is a go. The group has gotten the Gallium3D open source driver working, so now you are out of excuses for not having Steam OS running CS:GO on your PS4.

Mid 2016 we will be having it run as a PC. Sony will be patching older versions for sure but!

 

O nooooo, I can hear the little console peasants coming our way.

Cool. I've always wanted to mod my original Xbox and do stuff like install games to the hard drive, run NES/SNES/PS1 emulators on it...

I'd be more interested if it were the other way around. Running PS4 OS on PC but that won't be ever happening.

A HackStation 4 lol. I was wondering about the possibility as well, but given how OrbisOS is specific to the AMD APU some kernel hacks would be required, along with emulating some specific hardware components.

The only reason this is possible because the PS4 runs a custom version of BSD under the hood. BSD is remotely related to linux. Xboxes use modified versions of Windows. Windows doesn't allow what they did.

They should support this. They would sell more PS4s

 

Yeah, they'd sell more PS4s, but they're not interested in that as they're not making money off the hardware. All of the money from consoles is made from subscriptions, charging devs for licenses to develop on the platform and taking a cut from game sales.

Make installing a different OS easy and some companies will start buying up all the PS4s as computation nodes.
